Cynopsis: Classified Advantage
01.31.12
Good morning. It’s Tuesday, January 31, 2012, and this is your weekly issue of Cynopsis: Classified Advantage!
Companies that are Having Problems
Companies that are filing for bankruptcies or reorganizing are not to be ignored in difficult economic times. Though their futures will be uncertain, getting a job may be more important for your immediate situation, and could help with the long term.
When something has gone wrong at the company, and unless they are closing their doors completely, they are going to need new people with new ideas to get them back on solid financial ground.
They are going to need financial people who can find ways of cutting costs and raising capital.
Engineers who can develop a less expensive way of creating a product.
Marketing people who can direct the company into new demographics and improve the branding in their current markets.
Sales people who believe in the company and what they do.
People who can negotiate with everyone from bankers to unions, suppliers to customers.
HR people who can find the kind of new talent the company will require to become a profitable enterprise.
And most importantly, leaders. Obviously something went wrong with the company and its leadership if it finds itself in this position. Which means they will probably at least some C level positions open. Many of these positions will create incentive based contracts, rather than straight salary, but if you are the right person for the job, it could become very lucrative.
So if you read about a company that is having tough times, don’t dismiss them as potential employer. Worst case scenario, you are at the same point in your job search as you were yesterday, best case scenario, you are on the ground level of a newly reorganized and incredibly successful company. Either way, what do you have to lose?

Don’t Fall Trap to the Waiting Game During Your Job-Search Process
by Joel Garfinkle
You’ve done all your homework. You’ve developed a solid plan for your job search and have carefully researched two dozen potential employers. By leveraging your personal network, you’ve identified the hiring manager in each company and have sent out your brilliantly crafted cover letter and resume tailored to each company’s specific needs.
Now it’s just a matter of waiting for the phone to ring. Right?
Wrong!
Don’t fall trap to the waiting game during your job-search process. Use this critical time to your advantage by:
1. Working your personal networks: Continue to make contacts with old friends, clients and associates. Since most jobs are found through networking, you should be spending most of your time in this key area.
2. Expanding your personal networks: Get involved in civic organizations or attend various business seminars or events. A two-hour luncheon meeting can result in a dozen new contacts.
3. Augmenting your credentials: Are there key skills you lack or need to improve? Sign up for an on-line class or check out what’s available at your local community college.
4. Practicing your interviewing skills: There are plenty of resources available for you to gain a better insight into how to improve your interviewing skills. Work with a friend or your spouse to help make the role-play session as realistic as possible. Record and play back the session to diagnose and fix problem areas.
5. Taking care of yourself: The job search process can be stressful. So use this “free” time to “sharpen the saw” as management guru Steven Covey would say. Begin an exercise or weight-loss program. Read a self-help book. Take up a new hobby or volunteer for a nonprofit that is near and dear to your heart.
The average time for an unemployed person to find a job in today’s economy is almost 40 weeks a historic high. By developing and carefully following your job search strategy, you should be able to significantly reduce that time. In the meantime, rather than worrying and wringing your hands, use this time wisely to one-up the competition by improving your job prospects as well as yourself.
Joel Garfinkle is a professional motivational and keynote speaker that is recognized as one of the top 50 executive coaches in America. Not your average, motivational speaker, Joel uses his background in executive coaching, performance improvement, and change management to empower associations and corporate audiences to create more fulfilling work and to achieve their full leadership potential.
If I have a personal website that contains all the information that my resume and cover letter would, can I send a brief email when applying for a job, directing them to my site?
Yes, you can. However, it is important to remember that many employers are very busy and will have many applicants. The extra time it will take them to click on the link and head to your website, peruse it for details that match their job description, and make a decision on whether they want to consider calling you for an interview could make them decide you just aren’t worth the time. Many want to see the qualifications in the cover letter and the resume right there in front of them.
If you do send a potential employer to your personal website, make certain your personal website is extremely professional. You need to concern yourself with the content as well as whether your website is aesthetically pleasing and professional.
What is the best way of asking someone to write a reference for you without putting them on the spot?
Asking someone to write a reference does require some finesse in most cases. You want to make sure you are asking someone who will write you a good reference and feels comfortable doing so.
When you have decided who you want to ask, you should ask for a potential reference in a way that allows you to determine what type of letter they will write for you. You don’t just want a reference letter, you want a good recommendation. When asking for a potential reference, you should ask them if they feel comfortable writing you a good reference letter or if they are familiar enough with your recent job performance and responsibilities that they will be able to write a good recommendation. This way, if they do not want to give you a good recommendation, they can politely decline without having to go into detail.
During Joel’s tenure as an outplacement consultant, he has written many books from topics ranging from Getting Ahead to Find a Job in 14 Days. If you are asking for a raise or negotiating a higher salary, order Get Paid What You’re Worth.
