Saban Brands‘ Power Rangers gets a “super” charge with the premiere of its newest incarnation Power Rangers Super Samurai premieres on Nickelodeon on Saturday, February 18, 2012 at 12n. The new season of Power Rangers features the Samurai Rangers continuing to go up against evildoer Master Xandred, who has joined forces with the new and equally evil villain, the malevolent Serrator. This new season will also see the Samurai Rangers learning to employ the power of the legendary Black Box to form new Megazord combinations, allowing them to become Super Samurai. New episodes of Power Rangers Super Samurai will debut Saturdays at 12n on Nickelodeon.
Cartoon Network unveils Hasbro‘s NERF brand, Kids Foot Locker and Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment movie Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax as sponsors for the second annual Cartoon Network Hall of Game Awards, which this year is hosted by Shaquille O’Neal and will premiere on the network Monday, February 20, at 7p. Hasbro and Kids Foot Locker are returning Hall of Game sponsors.
- Hasbro will present the new NERF N-Strike Rayven CS-18 blaster throughout tune-in messaging leading up to the big night.
- Kids Foot Locker is the sponsor for the Gnarliest Newb award (best rookie of the year) and one of the awards fans can vote for online at HallofGame.com. Additionally, Kids Foot Locker will feature a separate voting effort for the “Kids Foot Locker Sickest Sneaker,” asking kids to vote for what they think is the “coolest” sneaker at www.hallofgame.com/sneakers. The winning shoe will be announced in a special commercial break within the awards show telecast. Kids Foot Locker will also feature in-store messaging for its sponsorship.
- New Hall of Game sponsor, Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment will promote the upcoming 3D-CG feature Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax, which features the voices of Danny DeVito, Ed Helms, Zac Efron, Taylor Swift and Betty White and releases March 2, 2012. Efron will introduce a special extended 70-second sneak peek of the new movie during an exclusive commercial pod during the awards telecast. Additionally, Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax will is the sponsor of the Most Awesome Mascot award online.
Nintendo of America goes head over heels in pink this Valentine’s Day with the release of the Pearl Pink edition of its stand-alone Nintendo 3DS hand-held system beginning February 10, 2012. This particular pink device was previously only available as part of a limited-edition bundle. In addition to Wi-Fi at locations nationwide, augmented reality features and the 3D function for games, and built-in social features, the 3DS has a camera with 3D capabilities, a new Swapnote application, available for free download, various downloadable games, among other features.
MORE KIDS STUFF
Canada’s Portfolio International acquires the global distribution rights for the tween-targeted, live-action HD TV series Julie & The Phantoms (26×30), produced by Brazil-based production company Mixer. The series follows the adventures of Julie, a free spirited and music teen whose life turns upside down when she accidentally brings the ghosts of a 1980s boy band back to life and has to help them adjust. Julie & The Phantoms premiered on Bandeirantes TV (Brazil) in October 2011, and is broadcast across Latin America on Nickelodeon Latin America.
Chello Zone’s global preschool channel JimJam (www.jimjam.tv) acquires several new nature-themed programs. JimJam picks up the Czech production My Animal Family (26×15) from Big Media, which it will debut in April 2012 for its subscribers across Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia. The series is narrated and features wildlife footage from a kid’s point-of-view of a day in the life of a baby animal and its family. The network acquires the animated series Conch Bay (65×30) from Medianetwork Communication. The series debuts February 2012 on its Italian feed, which broadcasts to subscribers on Sky Italia. The series follows a human boy named Ray and his life underwater with his adoptive dolphin mother and their marine friends. After saving a little girl from drowning, Ray’s secret marine life is uncovered and he is brought back to land by scientists to study his amphibian attributes. JimJam also picks up the CGI animated Chinese series Magic Wonderland (26×30) from Medianetwork Communication. Set to launch on the channel in March 2012, the series is set on a magical island where a beautiful girl, Ocean, lives with her grandfather.
Toon Goggles (www.toongoggles.com) a kid-targeted entertainment portal, acquires 240 hours of programming content from Germany’s Your Family Entertainment (YFE). The deal is comprised of 24 intellectual properties, 21 full series and two feature films from YFE’s library of programming for kids/tweens 3-13, which will be available to Toon Goggles viewers throughout the US and Canada soon. Titles from YFE’s programming library featured under the deal include: Magical Tooth Fairies about how the Toothfairies gained their powers; Bob’s Beach follows the adventures of a NYC dog, Bob, who winds up on an island paradise; Da Boom Crew a freak power surge transports a group of kids into a parallel world similar to their action games; Albert Says Albert learns about the rainforest from a talking snake; and MP4orce after entering a cheat code, four kids are transformed into video game heroes.
Director Martin Scorsese‘s movie Hugo will debut on Blu-ray 3D, Blu-ray and DVD, On Demand and for Digital Download on February 28, 2012 from Paramount Home Media Distribution. The release comes just two days after the Academy Awards, for which Hugo has received 11 nominations. Hugo will be available in a three-disc Blu-ray 3D/Blu-ray/DVD combo pack, as well as a two-disc Blu-ray/DVD combo pack, each of which includes behind-the-scenes special features including a making-of featurette, a retrospective on the genius of filmmaker Georges Melies, a look at the automaton featured in the story, as well as cast and crew interviews. The film will also be available as a single-disc DVD. All Blu-ray and DVD releases available for purchase will be enabled with UltraViolet, a new way to collect and access movies. With UltraViolet, consumers can add movies to their digital collection in the cloud, and then securely stream or download them to a variety of devices. Paramount Pictures and GK Films present a GK Films/Infinitum Nihil Production of A Martin Scorsese Picture: Hugo, which is based on author/illustrator Brian Selznick’s book The Invention of Hugo Cabret.

Calling all kid writers in grades K-3. The annual PBS Kids Go! Writers Contest (www.pbskids.org/writerscontest) is underway. The contest is designed to promote the advancement of kid’s reading skills via hands-on learning. Managed by member station WNED, partners with PBS stations nationwide to encourage kids grades K-3 to celebrate the creation of stories and illustrations by submitting their own original work. PBS stations across the country are working with schools, public libraries and other literacy groups to implement the PBS Kids GO! Writers Contest in their communities, and get kids to submit their illustrated stories to their local stations, which will select winners. This year for the first time, stories can be digitally submitted to the contest via a tool developed by sponsor, StudentPublishing.com (www.studentpublishing.com). Each participant that uses the tool will receive a free animated digital book of their story that they can shared, as well as allowing parents to purchase bound copies. As in past years, winning entries in each of the contest categories will be featured on the site, PBSKids.org/writerscontest.
Dunn and Sangeeta to exit HIT Entertainment. HIT’s President & CEO, Jeffrey Dunn and COO, Sangeeta Desai will leave the company upon the completion of Mattel‘s acquisition of HIT. Dunn, who joined the company in 2008, will depart immediately following the closing of the deal, while Desai, who has been in place since 2009, will leave after a brief transition period. Under Dunn and Desai’s management, HIT’s preschool brands, including Thomas & Friends, Fireman Sam and newer property Mike the Knight, have grown around the world with a range of TV and licensing deals.
Content distributor DRG bolsters its rights management business with the appointment of Charlotte Hargreaves as SVP/Marketing and Business Development. In her new position, Hargreaves is responsible for expanding into new business areas and digital platforms as well as helping to grow the brand development side of the business, acquiring non TV rights and exploiting brands across video and social gaming, live events, music and licensing and merchandising. Reporting to COO Jonathan Jackson, Hargreaves will work closely with the sales and acquisitions teams. Hargreaves previously served in senior positions at BBC Worldwide, Disney Sony, Cookie Jar and Atari.
