~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

When season three of Downton Abbey premieres on PBS’ Masterpiece, Academy Award and Golden Globe winner Shirley MacLaine joins the cast playing new character, Martha Levinson, the mother of Lady Grantham (Elizabeth McGovern).  Season two of Downton Abbey is currently airing on PBS’ Masterpiece on Sundays at 9p (check local listings) and will conclude with a two-hour finale on February 19.  Downton Abbey is written and created by Julian Fellowes and is a Carnival/Masterpiece co-production.  Liz Trubridge serves as producer and executive producers are Gareth Neame, Fellowes and Rebecca Eaton.

CBS approved an ensemble comedy pilot written by Louis C.K. and Spike Feresten.  NBCUniversal’s Universal Television division and BermanBraun are producing the untitled project about a group of young people working to achieve their creative dreams even in tough financial times.  Louis C.K. helms his own show Louie on FX and he and Feresten will be executive producers along with Gail Berman, Lloyd Braun and BermanBraun’s Gene Stein.

FOX picked up an untitled comedy pilot from Mindy Kaling (NBC’s The Office) where the writer/actress would star in a role described as a young Bridget Jones-type doctor trying to navigate her personal and professional lives.  Universal Television is producing; Kaling will pen the project and be an executive producer.  Howard Klein will serve as a nonwriting EP.

Music star and cookbook author, Trisha Yearwood commenced production in Nashville on a new daytime series for Food Network set to premiere this April.  The untitled series has six episodes featuring Yearwood as she shares her food traditions and her Southern hospitality with her friends and family.  The series is produced by Ellen Rakieten Entertainment and RelativityREAL.

GSN (Game Show Network) is working on a pilot called The American Bible Challenge, an original one-hour game show where contestants compete based on their Biblical knowledge.  The show will also feature a format that celebrates the role of The Bible in American society and culture and will attract Bible enthusiasts from across the country.  RelativityREAL will produce the show for GSN; RelativityREAL’s Tom Forman and Embassy Row’s Michael Davies are the EPs on the project.  Nick Stuart and Maura Dunbar of Odyssey Networks serve as Consulting Producers.

Set to premiere this summer, USA Network ordered a six-hour drama series, Political Animals from Greg Berlanti and Laurence Mark.  The series is from Berlanti Productions and Laurence Mark Productions in association with Warner Horizon Television.  The plot centers on a former first family in turmoil with focus on character Elaine Barrish, a divorced former First Lady and current Secretary of State who is struggling to keep her family together while dealing with the crises of the State Department.  Berlanti wrote and will direct the pilot and serve as EP with Mark.  Berlanti Productions’ Melissa Kellner Berman is on board as a Co-EP.

Spike TV gave a nod to three new reality series.  The first is titled Full Bounty, a competition series featuring a dozen aspiring bounty hunters.  The second series is titled Tattoo Nightmares that reveals people’s humorous horror stories involving awful tattoos and how they got them fixed.  The third project is called Rat Bastards about a group of men from Louisiana who track giant swamp rats in the Mississippi wetlands.  Spike ordered six episodes each of Tattoo Nightmares and Rat Bastards and 12 episodes of Full Bounty.  In addition, Spike approved 13 new episodes of the former FOX series World’s Wildest Police Videos that ran on FOX from 1998-2002.  Premiere dates for the new series are yet to be announced.
