CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis: Kids!
01/31/06
Good morning. It’s Tuesday, January 31, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.
Cox Communications has expanded its On Demand service’s programming offerings with the addition of some 1,300 content hours to its library. New programming to Cox’s On Demand service includes: MTV; Comedy Central; Nickelodeon; Noggin; Nick Jr.; VH1; CMT; BET; PBS Kids Sprout; G4; National Geographic Channel; Speed; Fuse; and TV Guide Spot.
If you can’t beat ‘em … share ‘em!?! Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group and Arvato mobile, a subsidiary of Bertelsmann, have teamed to launch In2Movies, a legal peer-to-peer file sharing service where consumers can purchase select Warner Bros. movies and TV programs in Germany, Austria and German-speaking Switzerland, and set to launch in March 2006. Offerings from Warner Bros.’ library will include Batman Begins, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The O.C., Friends, The Little Polar Bear – The Mysterious Island and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. The service will also offer programming from local distributors and third-party providers.
Been missing hearing Harry Potter news? Well, casting for Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix continues with the CBBC Newsround Online reporting that actor George Harris (Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark, Black Hawk Down) has been cast in the role of Kingsley Shacklebolt, who works for the Ministry of Magic as a Dark Wizard catcher and is also a member of the Order of the Phoenix. The role of James Potter will be played by newcomer Robbie Jarvis, per CBBC Newsround Online. The movie is set to begin filming next month.
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
The N will launch Degrassi Minis, the network’s first original broadband series this Friday, February 3, 2006 on its website (http://www.the-n.com). Each Degrassi Mini will run between 2-3 minutes with a new Mini premiering each week through March 17. The short form episodes feature series characters in either a scene that takes place in between regular episodes of Degrassi, or a different type of scene including bringing back old Degrassi characters. The Degrassi Minis are produced by Stefan Brogren (Archie “Snake” Simpson) of Epitome Pictures. I think that The N has got a great idea here, one that the networks might want to think about to drive adult tune-in for primetime series … who knows maybe the Desperate Housewives have a regular Mahjong game on Tuesday evenings, or not.
MORE KIDS STUFF
If you build it they will come, and that is true for the combination of educational and videogames, that don’t reek of smelly good for you content. Coming to the US this April 17 is Nintendo‘s Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day for the Nintendo DS handheld console. Brain Age games use games as mental brain-training challenges that incorporate word memorization, counting and reading, including games like sudoku. Nintendo has released three Brain Age games in Japan, known there as Brain Training, where they have had great success. The second game title in the series, Big Brain Academy (known as Brain Flex in Japan), features 15 activities that test the brain in areas like logic, memory, math and analysis, and is slated to launch in the US on May 30. Up to eight people can play with a single game card, and each activity takes less than a minute to complete. Both titles are rated E for everyone.
Simon & Schuster Audio has unveiled plans to jump into the kid’s audiobook market. Slated to be released in summer 2006, Simon & Schuster Audios first kid’s audio titles include: the authorized sequel to J.M. Barrie’s Peter Pan called Peter Pan in Scarlet, from author Geraldine McCaughrean, Room One from author Andrew Clements; and Gideon the Cutpurse from author Linda Buckley-Archer. These audio titles will be available for download as well as in CD format. Simon & Schuster Audio has previously published some Audiobooks for kids, but not under a full program.
An all new Speed Racer five issue mini comic book series, based on the original 1960s animated series, will be published beginning July 2006. The monthly series is part of a newly inked deal between Seven Seas Entertainment and Speed Racer Enterprises. Known as a publisher of manga, this marks Seven Seas’ first traditional color comic book series. A writer and illustrator will be announced soon.
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has voted to include a new category, Best Animated Feature Film, in the Golden Globe Awards. The animated feature category will make its first appearance at The 64th Annual Golden Globe Awards in 2007. To be eligible films must be feature-length (70 minutes or longer) and have no more than 25% live action. If fewer than eight animated films qualify, the award will not be given, in which case the films would be eligible for Best Picture. Conversely, if there are enough eligible animated movies to include the category, they would not then be eligible for the Best Picture category. The category will be limited to three nominations per year.” Previously animated films have been recognized by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association: Best Picture (Musical or Comedy) Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, The Lion King, Toy Story, Chicken Run and Shrek.
MARKETING/LICENSING
Reader’s Digest Children’s Publishing will publish and distribute interactive books based on Marvel’s Super Heroes program under a new agreement between the two. Targeted to kids 4-11 in North America and the UK and slated to be published in fall 2006, the first line of books from Reader’s Digest Children’s Publishing will include hard cover books, Storybooks with DVDs, and the Movie Theater Storybook format and will feature Marvel characters including Spider-Man, the X-Men, The Incredible Hulk among others. Distributed by Simon & Schuster, Reader’s Digest Children’s Publishing will release five Marvel titles priced between $9.99-$24.99.
Fox Home Entertainment, LLC and HIT Entertainment have entered into a multimillion dollar and multi-year agreement for the exclusive marketing, sales and distribution rights to HIT’s kid’s programming in the US and Canada, beginning fall 2006. Upcoming releases include several new direct-to-video and catalog titles for HIT’s franchises: Bob the Builder, Barney, Angelina Ballerina and Thomas & Friends. Fox will also distribute all of The Jim Henson Company‘s Henson Family Classics, including Fraggle Rock and Animal Jam. HIT serves as US agent for Henson’s home entertainment, licensing and merchandising.
The History Channel has teamed with Diamond Comic Distributors to support the launch of the network’s new season of its series Digging for the Truth, with a special edition mini-comic book titled Digging for the Truth adventure and Search for Shangri-La sweepstakes. Diamond Comic’s will distribute 750,000 of the 12-page Digging comics, which includes the Search for Shangri-La adventure, sweepstakes and a comic Shop Locator Service. Digging’s host Josh Bernstein goes in search of Shangri-La in the comic book adventure, but evil doers are out to thwart his efforts, and so in the comic Bernstein turns to readers/viewers to help determine the ending to the episode. Viewers can participate by watching episodes of Digging, Mondays February 6-May 8, at 9p, and then following logging onto History.com to answer trivia questions about that night’s episode and receive clues to solve the Shangri-La mystery.
