~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

CBS handed orders for two additional seasons of Survivor, the 21stt and 22nd installments and a 17th edition of The Amazing Race, with all to air during the 2010-2011 broadcast season. Survivor: Samoa, the 19th installment, averaged a 4.3/12 among A18-49 and the 20th edition, Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains premieres with a two-hour episode on February 11 at 8p. Survivor, with host Jeff Probst is produced by SEG, Inc. The Amazing Race recently finished its 15th edition and averaged a 3.7/9 among A18-49. The Amazing Race 16, with host Phil Keoghan, debuts February 4 at 8p and the series is produced by Jerry Bruckheimer Television and Earthview Inc. in association with ABC Studios and Amazing Race Productions.

Conan O’Brien ended his run as host of NBC’s The Tonight Show last Friday on a high mark as the show posted a 4.8 rating among A18-49 in the 25 local markets containing Nielsen people meters.

The NFL reported an average of 52.9 million people watched NFL Conference Champion games on Sunday, the most since January 1982 and a +34% bump in viewership compared to last season. The Minnesota Vikings vs. New Orleans Saints NFC Championship Game airing on FOX attracted 57.9 million viewers. The New York Jets vs. Indianapolis Colts game airing on CBS tallied 46.9 million viewers and marks the most-watched AFC Championship Game in 24 years.

Viewer Update: Hope for Haiti Now: A Global Benefit for Earthquake Relief was viewed by approximately 83 million viewers for at least one minute and the overall average audience was 24.1 million viewers, cites Nielsen. The two-hour telethon was carried live last Friday at 8p on 33 networks.

Arts and culture network, Ovation TV is bringing back new episodes of series Designer People starting February 1 with artist and designer Amy Devers as host. The series highlights today’s cutting-edge designers.

The same night Logo rolls out a second season of RuPaul’s Drag Race on February 1, the network will also introduce fans to a new companion series immediately following called RuPaul’s Drag Race: Untucked!. The new half-hour series takes viewers behind the scenes of the competition show, revealing a different view of the Drag Race runway and what competitors say about each other. RuPaul’s Drag Race: Untucked! debuts at 10p on February 1 and is also produced by World of Wonder.

MTV2 is premiering a new docu-series Sprite Step Off this Sunday at 3p following six fraternity and sorority step teams as they compete in the National Finals with a chance at winning one of two $100,000 scholarships. Chris “Ludacris” Bridges hosts the series produced by Rainforest Films and Simmons-Shelly Entertainment.

VH1 investigates shocking deaths of pop culture stars in a new season of Famous Crime Scenes, beginning February 12 at 9p. The seven-episode, half-hour series interviews witnesses and investigators as well as uses reenactments and virtual crime scenes to look in-depth at the deaths of such celebrities as Michael Jackson, John Lennon, Anna Nicole Smith and Selena among others.

MTV opens a second season of its docu-series 16 and Pregnant February 16 at 10p with ten 60m episodes. The series chronicles in real time the challenges young girls face during and right after their pregnancies.

Independent, male-targeted HDNet premieres comedy series Svetlana this April starring actress/comedienne Iris Bahr. The series is about Svetlana Maksimovoskaya, a Russian madam and political consultant who runs a family “business” dubbed St. Petersburg House of Discreet Pleasure in Hollywood.

2010 Upfront Update: Univision Communications Inc. will host its upfront presentation in New York City on May 20.

Twentieth Television, Inc. announced it is launching a new syndicated version of Don’t Forget the Lyrics! this Fall, with host Mark McGrath. The musical game show was picked up by the Fox Television Stations in the top ten markets including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas, Houston and Washington, D.C. The half-hour show was also picked up by VH1 as well as a primetime run on MyNetworkTV, where it will air next to the syndicated version of Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? Stations ready to air the syndicated Don’t Forget the Lyrics! are WNYW-WWOR/New York, KTTV-KCOP/Los Angeles, WFLD-WPWR/Chicago, KDFW-KDFI/Dallas-Fort Worth, KRIV-KTXH/Houston, WTTG-WDCA/Washington, D.C., KMSP-WFTC/Minneapolis-St. Paul, WOFL-WRBW/Orlando, KSAZ-KUTP/Phoenix and WUTB/Baltimore. RDF USA and Apploff Entertainment produces Don’t Forget the Lyrics!.

Comcast International Media Group (CIMG) hired Transmedia International to introduce Golf Channel to viewers in Taiwan this month. Transmedia will operate the hi-def channel with programming 24/7 consisting of the sport’s top tournaments and original series with Chinese subtitles.

Connection III Entertainment Corp. announced its syndicated TV entertainment magazine series Made In Hollywood was picked up for a sixth season and was renewed by CBS Television Stations group in a 21-market deal. Additionally, Connection III Entertainment’s E/I Made In Hollywood: Teen Edition was picked up for a fifth run this fall and sold to CBS Television Stations as well as the CW Plus stations.

Late yesterday distributor Program Partners announced its new deal with Knowlera Media, a supplier of “how-to” video content.  Together they will develop “21st century program offerings” for stations, sold on a barter and cash basis.  The companies are specifically looking at turn-key solutions for stations which can provide high quality video content for news features, local programs and sales initiatives, content that can be made workable on a variety of platforms while keeping the affiliate’s production overhead in check. 

~ DISTRIBUTION, CLEARANCE & CARRIAGE ~

Wedding Central, the new 24/7 multi-platform network focused on weddings, made a distribution agreement with Mediacom Communications and will be added on Mediacom’s basic tier line-up in February. Mediacom reaches 1.3 million plus subscribers in 22 states nationwide. Currently, Wedding Central is available via Cablevision’s iO digital tier.

New York-based Metropolitan Opera and Clasart Classic made an exclusive international distribution deal involving the television rights to the Met’s complete opera catalog. The deal covers international TV distribution rights for all countries except the US, Canada, New Zealand, Japan and the UK and covers a collection of opera productions produced in hi-def and the Met’s Live in HD series which began in 2006.

Olympusat launched six Hispanic networks in the San Francisco Bay Area via Comcast and available to Comcast’s CableLatino subscribers. The networks include:

  • Cable Noticias – World news from a Latino perspective.
  • Gran Cine – Commercial-free network offering Spanish-language movies and series.
  • La Familia Cosmovision – Family entertainment network with music, kids programming, live interview shows and more.
  • Sorpresa! – 24/3 Spanish-language children’s network.
  • TV Chile – Distributed across 5 continents with 18 hours of live programming daily with a variety of programming including Chilean Soccer League games.
  • TV Colombia – Known as RCN around the world, Colombia’s top-rated family network with coverage of Colombian Professional Soccer League.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Odessa Rae was cast as a new villain on The CW’s Smallville, according to TVGuide.com. Rae will portray Siobhan McDougal, aka the Silver Banshee starting in episode 16 titled “Escape.” Also, an upcoming addition to Smallville’s cast this season is veteran actress Annette O’Toole, reprising her role as Clark Kent’s mother, Martha.

CBS picked up two multi-camera comedy pilots, reports THR. From Josh Schwartz and Matt Miller, the first project is titled Hitched about 20-something newlyweds who, following their honeymoon realize they have nothing in common. Warner Bros. Television is producing; Schwartz and Miller are writing and executive producing. The second untitled project is from Tad Quill and CBS TV Studios and is a relationship comedy about a father and son.

Joanna Garcia (Privileged) will next star in the untitled comedy pilot for ABC from Shana Goldberg-Meehan. The plot is about two sisters in different stages of their romantic relationships and is produced by Warner Bros. Television.

Correction: Steven Cragg (not Craff) is writing and executive producing NBC’s comedy pilot This Little Piggy.

~ RATINGS ~

Friday A18-49 Analysis: ABC and UNIV tied at #1 Friday night with the A18-49 demo at 1.5/5 each, according to final national ratings from Nielsen. The first two hours of primetime involved the worldwide live broadcast of Hope for Haiti Now telethon and no ratings were available for ABC, CBS, The CW, FOX and NBC. At 8p and 9p, for those networks airing regular programming, UNIV won with Hasta Dinero Separe at 1.4/5 and Sortilegio with 2.0/6 respectively. Then at 10p, normal programming resumed and ABC came out on top with 20/20 at 1.5/5 followed closely by NBC’s Dateline at 1.4/5.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Spike TV elevated John Griffin to SVP/Programming where he will continue supervising all scheduling and media planning on behalf of the network and its programming acquisitions. Based in New York City, John reports to Kevin Kay, President, Spike TV.  Well done John!

Scripps Networks appointed Soheila Ataei as SVP/Human Resources, Travel Channel Media. Soheila will head HR duties for the Travel Channel and its related businesses while based at Travel Channel offices in Chevy Chase, MD. 

Ian Black joins Worldwide Biggies as VP/Corporate Development and Product Strategy. Ian will concentrate on developing new character-based brands via online and mobile entertainment.

Dara Cohen was named VP/Content Strategy with Island Def Jam Music Group. Dara was hired to create original film, television and web content for the company and its artists. Based in Los Angeles, Dara reports to Antonio ‘L.A.’ Reid, Chairman.

VMS added Joseph J. Scotti to the newly created position as SVP/Broadcast Media and Affiliate Relations. Joseph will be the primary contact across all media with an emphasis on television stations and cable and broadcast television networks. Joseph is charged with developing partnerships, affiliations and new business opportunities on behalf of both VMS and the broadcaster.  Welcome back Joe!

John Terenzio was tapped as Executive Producer for CBS Television Distribution’s (CTD) new syndicated program Swift Justice With Nancy Grace. John is also EP for the syndicated court show Judge Joe Brown, also distributed by CTD, and will continue in this position as well.

Tracie Savage, a veteran anchor/reporter at KNBC/Los Angeles, has established Tracie Savage Communications, a firm providing companies with media and presentation training.

Global talent management firm, Korn/Ferry International hired Sean Scanlon as Senior Client Partner/Media and Entertainment Sector. In his new position, Sean will be based in New York. Previously, Sean worked for Sucherman Consulting Group, Inc. as President/Executive Search Business and a senior management consultant.

Stephen Colafrancesco was promoted to Corporate VP/Marketing with Bright House Networks, effective February 8. Since 2004, Stephen was the company’s VP/Marketing for the Tampa Bay Division. In his new role, Stephen will head all marketing efforts for the company nationwide for systems in Bakersfield, Birmingham, Detroit, Indianapolis, Orlando (Central) and Tampa. Based at company headquarters in Orlando, Stephen will report to Kevin Hyman, EVP/Cable Operations, Bright House Networks.
