Cynopsis: Classified Advantage
01/25/11
Good morning – it’s Tuesday, January 25, 2011, and this is your weekly issue of Cyn opsis: Classified Advantage!
Ask A Coach
Having trouble finding a job? Ask a coach. Not a life coach, they’re too expensive, ask a high school athletic coach. They will tell you all you need to know, if not how to get a job, at least how to improve your chances.
Any one who says practice makes perfect is a bad coach and a bad job seeker. Write all the bad resumes you want, it isn’t going to help.
Perfect practice makes perfect. If you can’t write the perfect resume, show it to your friends. You have friends that are better writers than you, you have friends who are better business people than you and you have friends that are just plain old smarter than you. Show each and everyone of them your resume and cover letter. Show them each new copy you write, incorporate their suggestions, write it again, and show it to them again. This process can take a while, be patient but understand, your finished product will be much better than what you started out with, and you’ll learn to be a better writer.
Find the meanest friend you know as ask them to mock interview you for a job. Why the meanest, ask a coach. Most good coaches want game day to be the easiest day of the week. Every practice should be harder than any game. Its what brings the joy and the enthusiasm to the game, or the interview. Plus you’ll be ready for anything. Isn’t that what a good coach does? Prepare you for everything? If you have a nice person do the mock interview, what have they really prepared you for, and won’t your nerves be just as bad? Have a son of a bitch mock interview you, not only will you be better prepared, but your poise and confidence will be evident.
And what if the interview starts out badly? What would the coach tell you? Keep doing what you’re doing. Companies interview for a reason, the same reason why athletes play games. Because paper can never tell the whole story. So stick to your game plan, keep plugging away, never give up, you may have to throw a Hail Mary, you might not get the job, but if went down swinging, and even if that means nothing to the interviewer, it should mean something to you.
All coaches run drills to improve your skills, but great coaches keep this at a minimum, great coaches fill their practices with game situations, at game speed. Great coaches never need to run sprints at the end of practice, because their athletes have sprinted in every drill, during every practice. Why would you walk through a drill, when you have to run during the game? Same with looking for a job, you cannot lack the intensity needed, just because you’re not in an interview. You want an interview? Write, call, talk, email, network and work with all the intensity you can muster.
Another important piece of advice that all good coaches give is there is a time to get away from the game. People need to reset, reboot. So take the weekend, or a Wednesday, spend it with someone special, and forget all about the game, the search, the situation, as best as you can. Don’t feel guilty about it. It’s actually very important to take a break and return refreshed.
Nobody wins every game, nobody gets every job they interview for, but the secret to both, is to never quit, not for one second. Every second you’re in the running, you have a chance, so you give it your all, especially when it seems pointless. Everyone is impressed with the person who, “can fill the unforgiving minute with sixty seconds worth of distance run.”
Losing games, and not getting jobs is hard, and will knock you on your butt. And they only thing we can do, is get up one more time than we’ve been knocked down. It is all that anyone can ask of us. But as one coach said to me, “John, lose with grace, and win with a quiet dignity. This will separate you from almost everyone you know.” And make an impression on those who can make important decisions about your life.
The greatest thing a coach ever told me, and the best piece of advice I have for job seekers is this, “What did you do today to become better at what you do, that your opponents did not? When you can answer that question in a positive manner, day after day, good things will come your way.”

The Powells have powers; Super powers! Jim is being super at keeping his crime fighting from his family, Stephanie is being super at keeping her powers from her boss, Daphne is being super at keeping her brother J.J.’s power a secret from their parents, while J.J. is being super at lying because he wants his parents to be proud of him. I’m drained just thinking about it. One of these energy drains was recently eliminated- J.J.’s secret. Let’s look at what’s draining your energy and how to eliminate it and make room for career success.
I’m going to give you the formula for eliminating an energy drain. It involves a reward so give it a go:
The first step towards eliminating the things that consume, exhaust and deplete your energy, physically and emotionally, is to recognize what they are.
Evaluate your surroundings and your situations to determine your top 5 energy drains. Consider the areas of your home or office, relationship issues or work related problems.
- Schedule a time to handle these 5 items.
- Get support for those things that you’d rather avoid.
- Break the tasks into small, manageable steps and do them.
- Build in a reward to motivate you through the process.
Take the first step to schedule when you will address your energy drain. Just putting it on a calendar, even if it’s in a month, takes it off your mind.
Be sure to follow through with the reward you promised yourself. That’s called positive reinforcement and it builds trust with our subconscious mind, so that next time you use this technique, you will be in sync, and look forward to the process
Despite not being a true genius and super jock in his parent’s eyes, the drain was eliminated for both J.J. and his sister and the fall out wasn’t bad. Think about how you will feel once your drain is eliminated and you’re enjoying your reward.

Regarding email thank you notes, isn’t time a factor? Simply from an efficiency standpoint, email is immediate, can save you a day waiting for it to be mailed, and also could help make up a day if you didn’t have a chance to send one on the day of the interview.
Further, do people still check their snail mail inboxes every day? I check mine about once a week, and while I’m not an executive with hiring power, I would think most people would find mailboxes antiquated as a form of getting information they are supposedly waiting for.
Finally, I thought you might be able to address the idea that a thank you note is required. When I’ve met with a prospective employer, I will send a follow-up email thank you a few days later because A) it is the custom, B) it’s a reminder who I was among the several candidates the hirer met, and C) it’s a way of indirectly corresponding to see if there has been any movement about the position.
But on the other side of this, is there really a hiring manager who is combing through resumes and saying, “Thank you note, check. No thank you note, trash”?
I guess I’m just trying to understand the value of this custom and whether it actually does get noticed, because in my view it is meant to add a nice, personal touch but actually seems quite impersonal once you’ve sent or received such notes a few times.
The value of a thank you note reflects your own personal values. A thank you note is not a necessity it’s a nice-ity. It says something about you, and yes, the absence of one says something about you as well. There is no checklist, but it could be a “tie-breaker.” I’ve received thousands of thank you notes through the years and I’ve appreciated every one of them… even the impersonal ones. The personal ones definitely stand out, though.
As far as delivery, it depends on how quickly a decision is being made. Whenever possible, I encourage a hand written, snail mail card which either reflects on something you spoke about, an interest you noticed in the person’s office (like she has dogs or he likes sailing), or something that reveals something about you. I have not encountered people who check their snail mailbox once a week unless it’s a PO Box. Most decision makers have assistants who open their mail daily. Of course, when in doubt, you can always ask, “What method of follow up do you prefer, email or snail mail?”
If your intentions are good and your sentiments sincere, a strong thank you note is an important business tool that is significantly underused.
I’ve been an Account Executive at a Network affiliate station in a small market for over 7 years, my goal is to move up to management. I was recently passed for LSM position in my office but the word has gotten around that I’m looking. It’s not easy to find another management position in a small market, especially if I want to stay within the industry.
I received a call last week from our local cable company who is interested in interviewing me for their LSM position over 2 markets. I was highly recommended for this position by someone in the industry.
My question is, is it a step down to go from the # 1 station in a market with an Network affiliate as an AE to a cable company who doesn’t have the same reach nor the same status even if it’s the LSM position? I’ve been selling against cable for years now, but this career opportunity is very attractive at this time in my life.
Thanks! You answered the question for me in your last sentence. This is a very personal question and my answer is applicable to you, because it has to do with what’s important to you. It sounds like you already know. As far as being “a step down,” in whose opinion? Are the people who care about your well being judging your job title? Or is your happiness and job satisfaction what’s important to them? If it’s the former you may want to re-evaluate your relationships.
To reassure you, jobs in management are so scarce these days, that many people are taking lesser titles and pay cuts just to have a job. The fact that this job is attractive to you is very fortunate compared to the people who are taking jobs for the sake of having a job.
And finally, this is entertainment, the business of perception. Should you take this job and after a time decide to pursue another opportunity, if the subject comes up, spin it to your advantage. Point out all of the positives for making the move. Your intelligence and passion will impress future employers and it won’t even be an issue.
