BBC is reorganizing its BBC Online division with a goal by 2013 to streamline the service under the strategy title: Putting Quality First as approved by the BBC Trust.  The overall BBC Online service budget will decrease by £34m from £137m today, to £103m by 2013-2014. In making these changes and budget reductions, BBC Online will eliminate 360 jobs over the next two years.  Under its new strategy, BBC Online will cover ten unique products: News, Sports, Weather, CBeebies, CBBC, Knowledge & Learning, Radio & Music, TV & iPlayer, Homepage and Search.

ABC is adding the Mark Burnett-produced reality competition series Shark Tank back to its schedule beginning March 25 at 8p.  During the new sophomore season, businessman Mark Cuban and comedian Jeff Foxworthy will make appearances among others.  Shark Tank will air its eight all-new episodes in Supernanny’s current Friday night time period.

The Weather Channel launches the new half-hour series Weather Caught on Camera January 31 at 8p.  Hosted by meteorologist Mike Bettes, this original program features video clips of dramatic weather captured on video from a dust storm in Australia to avalanches in Wyoming and Montana.  An encore of the premiere episode airs February 2 and the series will air in its regular time slot of Wednesdays at 8p and 830p. Other primetime series airing new episodes during the week of January 31st includes Weather Proof on Wednesdays at 9p and 930p; Storm Riders airing on Thursdays at 8p; and Cantore Stories slotted for Thursdays at 9p and 930p.

Jack LaLanne, the man recognized as the founder of the modern physical fitness movement, died Sunday afternoon at his home in Morro Bay, CA.  He was 96.  Mr. LaLanne began his physical fitness lifestyle in 1936 by lifting weights, which was considered an oddity at the time, and he established the prototype for the fitness gyms to come in a former office building in Oakland.  In 1951, The Jack LaLanne Show launched as a local program in the San Francisco market then went nationwide via daytime television in 1959.  Mr. LaLanne was known for his characteristic short-sleeved jumpsuit and using props such as a broomstick, a chair and a rubber cord during his TV workouts.  His television show continued through the mid-1980s.  Mr. LaLanne became a national household name as he personified regular exercise and proper diet for everyone.  He invented the precursors to the modern exercise machines, marketed items such as the Power Juicer and sold exercise videos and fitness books.  He encouraged women to join his health clubs and inspired the elderly and the disabled that they could exercise despite their limitations.  Even though The Jack LaLanne Show ended its run on television in the mid-1980s with 3,000 episodes, it was picked up in reruns on ESPN Classic.   Mr. LaLanne is survived by his wife, Elaine, and their son, Jon; his daughter Yvonne from a previous marriage; and a stepson, Dan from Elaine LaLanne’s previous marriage.

NATPE 2011:

AETN International, a unit of A&E Television Network LLC (AETN) premieres several programs from Lifetime at NATPE.  The three original non-fiction series include:

  • Seriously Funny Kids with 20 half-hour eps from LMNO Productions. The series debuts on Lifetime in the US on February 1.
  • Glamour Belles with 6 half-hour eps from Magilla Entertainment will premiere on Lifetime in March.
  • Four of a Kind with 12 half-hour eps from Asylum Entertainment will launch on Lifetime in March.
  • AETN International is also representing five two-hour movies from Lifetime titled Amanda Knox: Murder on Trial in Italy; He Loves Me; And Baby Will Fall; Gone; and Bringing Ashley Home.

Debmar-Mercury along with the distribution company 30 Steps was chosen as distributors for the weekend lifestyle series America Now from Raycom Media and ITV Studios America.  America Now, hosted by Bill Rancic, will launch as a daily syndicated strip for fall 2011.  The show debuted as a weekend series last October and currently airs on 43 stations in the 36 Raycom Media markets representing 12.6% of the US.  Presently, America Now is on WOIO/Cleveland, WBTV/Charlotte, WXIX/Cincinnati, WMC/Memphis and WAVE/Louisville.

Shine International made a development and production deal with Japanese-based entertainment firm Yoshimoto Kogyo to develop, produce and distribute content in the US, Japan and the international marketplace.  Shine Group’s US production company, Reveille will team with Yoshimoto to create original unscripted formats for the US or Japan and retool them for other territories.  Shine International will distribute the formats worldwide.  The two companies additionally revealed their first joint project centers on a variety/reality show project titled Spice of Life, created and executive produced by Masi Oka (Heroes, Hawaii Five-O).

TeleFutura launched the 24/7 TeleFutura On Demand with most US distributors.  New programming is being added to the VOD channel daily and it started with India, Escandalo TV (Showbiz TV), Asi es la Vida (That’s Life), Delicioso and Cine de las Estrellas (All-Star Movies).

Shaftesbury Sales Company, the distribution division of Shaftesbury, said Starz Entertainment in the US picked up three titles including the series Life with Derek with 70 half-hour episodes; the follow-up 90-minute movie Vacation with Derek; and the tween series Baxter with 13 half-hour episodes.

My experience at NATPE 2011 in Miami – Day 1: Well, actually we have to begin with Sunday, the day before Day 1, when most people arrived.  The renovated Fontainebleau Hotel is fabulous – on the water with several pools, cabanas, you name it.  And without rubbing it in, I have to say the weather has been most cooperative.  The set up is pretty good with the Bleau Bar smack dab in the middle of the hotel lobby where meetings are conducted thru the day for those without suites or exhibit floor space – and at the end of the day, it’s great place to catch up.

On to Day #1 – and I stumbled upon a major wrinkle around 915am: the 4-lift elevator bank taking people up and down to the suites where the majority of the exhibitors are located.  First thing this morning as I and many others attempted to get to 10am meetings, the line for the elevators was anywhere from 30-60 minutes long.  While I did get to my meeting on the 33rd floor on time only because I began the process 45 minutes early, but the person I was meeting was late and ended up walking up 15 stories to meet me!  That’s nuts!  Coming back down via elevators was also an issue – me and many other ended up walking down when the “going down” elevator never showed up (33 floors … my legs are like rubber).

The good news for me was the issue didn’t repeat itself after the morning rush.  In fact the elevator bank was no longer a “situation” when I needed them again for the first post-lunch meeting on the 26th floor, tho coming down was again an issue and again I walked (I’ll be crippled tomorrow).  So the question is, will they be an issue again Tuesday morning? My guess is everyone will plan accordingly.  I haven’t been to the Exhibition floor yet or the other suites tower, so that’s for tomorrow.
As to the market itself — the buzz is there is business being done here and a lot of talk about formats. Interestingly, not the exporting of US formats, which is the norm, but rather the import of international formats, both with and without track records.  There are shows being announced, i.e., American Now; some purchases made and announced (see above), and partnerships forged – all reminiscent of NATPE of yore.  Minus the one glitch, a good first day … on to Day #2 and the Exhibition Floor.

~ DISTRIBUTION, CLEARANCE & CARRIAGE ~

Rentrak Corporation made a deal with Canada’s Astral Television Networks to provide measurement services from Rentrak’s OnDemand Essentials service.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Former MTV Networks’ production executives Tony DiSanto and Liz Gateley established their own independent production company, DiGa.  The new company formed a partnership with Ben Silverman’s studio Electus to create, develop and produce content across all platforms.  DiGa is headquartered in New York City with a production and edit unit in Los Angeles.  DiGa already has a collection of exclusive television projects in the works including a comedy format from Nick Cannon’s NCredible Entertainment helmed by Amanda Diva; a fashion series with an interactive component from Jill Martin; three series with Jackhole Industries and other scripted and reality projects in development.  Both DiSanto and Gateley will remain active with MTV Networks through their various series development commitments between MTV and DiGa.  In addition, DiSanto and Gateley will continue as executive producers on the upcoming MTV series Teen Wolf.  Furthermore, DiGa tapped producer Mike Powers as Creative Executive in charge of managing all production and development for DiGa’s projects and Scott Silberman as Executive in Charge of Production.

SevenOne International sold the TV game show format You Deserve It to ABC in the US.  The game show was created by Dick de Rijk the creator of Deal or No Deal.  You Deserve It is a production partnership between de Rijk and Red Arrow Entertainment Group, a ProSiebenSat.1 Group company.  Red Arrow’s US-based production company, Kinetic Content will produce the US version for ABC.  De Rijk, Kinetic Content’s head Chris Coelen and Kinetic’s Matilda Zoltowski will serve as executive producers.

Current TV commenced production on its new half-hour series Bar Karma yesterday, the first community-developed television series.  Production is taking place at the new Ironbound Film Studios in Newark, NJ.  Filming will continue on the 12-episode series created by Worldwide Biggies’ CEO, Albie Hecht until the end of March.  Bar Karma premieres on Current TV February 11 at 10p.
