Cynopsis: Kids!

1/23/07

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, January 23, 2007 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Nick Jr. has picked up, Yo Gabba Gabba! (20×30′), a new original live-action series targeted to preschoolers.  A magazine-style music series, Yo Gabba Gabba will focus on simple life lessons and universal experiences in a preschooler’s life, all punctuated with music and dance.  The show features host by DJ Lance Rock (Lance Robertson) and five toy/puppet characters that come to life; the series will include animated segments, real kids and special guests.  Produced by The Magic Store and Wildbrain, Yo Gabba Gabba! is set to begin production this April, and scheduled to premiere on Nick Jr. fall 2007.

Entertainment Rights Plc has acquired Where’s Waldo?, which is known internationally as Where’s Wally?, from series creator, Martin Handford.  Under the deal ER will hold the worldwide audio visual, licensing and merchandising, publishing, live events and digital rights in perpetuity to the Where’s Waldo? brand.  ER plans to create new animated and live-action content, including multi-platform components, which it expects to launch worldwide in 2008/2009.  Handford will continue creating and publishing the Where’s Waldo?/Where’s Wally? picture books, which are published by Candlewick in the US and by Walker Books in the UK.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Nelvana and Spin Master Ltd. have partnered to launch a new line of toys and games based on two the animated action-adventure series, DI-GATA Defenders and the upcoming new series Bakugan, which is currently in production and slated to bow later this year.  Spin Master has inked a deal to serve as the master toy licensee for DI-GATA and is producing a game that includes action figures, dice and trading cards.  Targeted to K6-11 Bakugan (52×30′) is a 2D anime style series that is co-produced by Nelvana, Spin Master, Sega Toys, TMS, and Japan Vistec. Spin Master will produce and distribute the Bakugan merchandise line globally, excluding Asia.

Decode Entertainment has inked a deal with Nicktoons Network for a second season of the animated series Planet Sketch, for a total of 26×11′ episodes.  Co-produced by Decode and Aardman Animations Nicktoons Network will debut Planet Sketch shorts this spring 2007. The show features a quirky collection of madcap characters brought to life with a unique brand of comedy and charm.

Adult Swim is set to premiere two new original live-action 15-minute series on Sunday, February 11, at 11:45p and 12 midnight.  Adult Swim is targeted to teens and up.

  • A variety-sketch show, Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job features a collection of short films, parodies, animations, musical numbers as well as special guests.  The show was created by and stars the comedy duo Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim, the team that created the animated series Tom Goes To The Mayor.
  • Shot entirely in front of a green screen, Saul of the Mole Men is billed as a serial comedy-adventure that features a mix of live-action and puppets.  The show follows Saul, who winds up stranded inside the Earth’s core where he meets the Mole Men who don’t understand his strange ways. Executive produced by Peter Girardi, Craig Lewis and Tom Stern who draw their inspiration from the work of Sid and Marty Krofft (Land Of The Lost), serialized sci-fi (Tom Baker-era Dr. Who) and the Planet of the Apes franchise.

Disney Channel programming highlights:

  • Every episode of The Suite Life of Zack and Cody, including a premiere episode, will air as part of a marathon on the network beginning this Saturday, January 27 at 12n-5:30a and picking up again Sunday, January 28, 12n-10p.  The new episode will bow Saturday at 8p.
  • The following weekend as the Chicago Bears (yeah!!) and the Indianapolis Colts (I’m sure they are a nice team too) are doing whatever it is that one does the night before the Super Bowl, Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer will be making his acting debut on the animated series The Replacements, Saturday, February 3, 8p on the channel.  Palmer won’t have too much of a stretch as he makes a guest appearances as himself in the episode.

ABC will celebrate Valentine’s Day with the animated holiday specials Charlie Brown Valentine and Winnie the Pooh, a Valentine for You, on Saturday, February 10 at 8p and 8:30p respectively.  Both half-hour specials will air with Spanish subtitles via secondary closed captioning.  The Peanuts special originally debuted in 2002, while the Winnie the Pooh special bowed first in 1999.
