Cynopsis: DIGITAL

01/22/08

Good morning, it’s Tuesday, January 22, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

HBO begins testing a new broadband content offering today in a selection of Time Warner Cable systems in Milwaukee and Green Bay, Wisconsin. HBO on Broadband, viewable only on PCs by HBO TWC subscribers, will offer access to some 600 episodes (400 at any one time) of HBO originals per month for no additional charge, including The Wire, Sex and the City and The Sopranos. The company, markedly conservative on the broadband front so far, offered no details on whether or not the service would eventually be offered nationally.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

News service Reuters has launched a News Video Online syndication service making 15-20 online video clips a day available to online publishers. Videos from around the world will be updated 8-10 times throughout the day, reporting on topics such as news, entertainment, science, sports and technology.

Electronic Arts announced a new installment of its hit Battlefield video game available as a free, ad-supported online download. EA has already experimented with the ad supported model in South Korea, according to The New York Times, with the free version of its FIFA soccer game attracting 5 million users and generating more than $1 million in monthly in-game sales. Battlefield Heroes will be released in the U.S. for the PC this summer.

NBC.com is conducting another prop auction to raise money for the Mona Foundation, which supports global education initiatives and women’s rights. Items up for auction include canvas print reproductions off the Heroes set from graphic novelist Time Sale and autographed Dwight Schrute bobbleheads from The Office.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

Participation media firm Telescope announced it has licensed its technology to twelve TV programs during the first quarter of ’08. New projects include mobile/landline/online integrations with Bravo’s Make Me A Supermodel and mobile audio/text advice for Lifetime’s How To Look Good Naked and ABC’s Dance War.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

Yahoo is expected to announce hundreds of employee layoffs this week as the company undergoes major restructuring, according to weekend reports.

Nokia and Facebook are working on a tie-up to integrate the social network on Nokia handsets, according to paidcontent.org. Nokia may also be interested in purchasing a stake in the company.

Applications leveraging content identification technologies such as digital watermarking and fingerprinting are growing rapidly and could surpass $500 million worldwide by 2012, according to a new report from MultiMedia Intelligence. Fingerprinting and watermarking will play a pivotal role in broadband operators’ developing plans to filter peer-to-peer traffic on their networks to restrict copyrighted material that is being illegally distributed.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

WPP, purchaser of 24/7 Real Media last year, is close to acquiring another major online ad firm, according to reports. VideoEgg, JumpTap and small business-focused Spot Runner (of which WPP already owns a small stake) are mentioned by The New York Post as possible targets.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

The subscription and download media segment (including music, sports, entertainment, movies, TV and news) grew 40% in 2006 to $1.9 billion, according to a new report from Dublin, Ireland-based Research and Markets. The market is forecast to grow by another 39% in 2007 to $2.6 billion and 37.3% in 2008 to $3.7 billion. Music, via audio downloads and streaming subscription growth, is forecast to capture close to 85% of total revenue in these early days of the industry.

A new survey from new media consultancy Interpret LLC found that 94% of Americans are now aware of the writers’ strike and that 35% have already changed their TV viewing habits because of it. Some 27% of the 1,013 18-49 year olds surveyed said they watch less network TV. Another half (49%) of admitted Oscars fans said stars should not cross the picket line to attend the ceremony.

More tidbits from comScore‘s November Video Metrix report:

  • 74.5 million users viewed 2.9 billion videos on YouTube (39 videos per viewer)
  • 43.2 million users viewed 389 million videos on MySpace.com (9 videos per viewer)
  • Online viewers watched an average of 195 minutes of online video, a 29% gain from 1/07
  • The average online video duration was 2.8 minutes
  • The average online video viewer consumed 69 videos

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Dave Networks named David Goldsmith as SVP/Creative Services and GM of the Hewlett Packard-Next.tv Initiative – the IPTV service being developed for HP notebook computers. David will oversee day-to-day operations, strategic planning, content partner agreements and interfacing with HP.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

For those who wish to brush up on their knowledge of Dr. Martin Luther King, MLK Online is a treasure trove of text, video and audio content including footage of classic speeches and addresses given on the day of his assassination. The controversial “Return of the King” episode of Cartoon Network’s The Boondocks seems to be missing (when Dr. King comes out of coma after 32 years only to find himself labeled as a terrorist sympathizer,) but here it is on Truveo.
