01/18/05

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, January 18, 2005, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Teri Hatcher may have gone home with a Golden Globe on Sunday night, but the show Desperate Housewives won big time airing opposite the Golden Globe Awards program.  The Golden Globes drew in a 5.7/13 A18-49 from 8-11p according to fast affiliate ratings from Nielsen Media Research, measuring time period ratings only.  ABC began the evening with a two part Extreme Makeover Home Edition, pulling a 4.4/11 for the first hour and jumping to a huge 9.0/20 for the second hour.  Housewives at 9p kicked it up further with a 11.0/24.  The Globes came back to win the 10p hour with a 6.8/16.  WB debuted its new Sunday night schedule beginning with repeats of Summerland’s Season #1 airing at 7pm (1.2/2 A18-49, tho doing better among female teens with a 2.5/9), Charmed stayed at 8p (2.3/3 A18-49), and Steve Harvey’s Big Time moved to 9pm (1.8/3 A18-49).

Premiering Tonight:
Fox:  American Idol at 8p

Tonight’s Finale:
WB:  High School Reunion at 9p

Casting / Development / Production

  • WB‘s comedy pilot True has cast Anne Heche in the lead role about a new young mother who has been avoiding life by staying in school.  The new life in her life forces a wake up call.
  • ABC has ordered up a pilot for a remake of Night Stalker (Touchstone TV), originally a series inthe mid 1970’s based on a couple of made for TV movies, about a detective, Kolchak, who finds supernatural trouble whereever he goes.
  • ABC has also ordered Soccer Moms (Touchstone TV), with a cast contingent order, about a couple of regular moms who spend their free time as private investigators.
  • Two other pick ups from ABC In Justice (Touchstone TV) about a group of lawyers who assist the legally down-trodden; and a comedy – Lennie Rose (Touchstone TV) about a young single woman living in NYC.
  • NBC ordered up a pilot called World of Trouble, set in the world of a special FBI unit designated to investigate crimes against Americans at home and on foreign soils.
  • If you like Growing Up Gotti, then this new show from Fox may just appeal to you.  Cameras will follow music producer David Foster and his 20-something step children, as he tries to give them a little life guidance.  From GRB Entertainment, the project has received a 6-ep order.
  • Supernatural (Wonderland Sound and Vision), a pilot order for WB, is about two brothers in search of … the supernatural.  Naturally.
  • Sara Gilbert joins the cast of In the Game starring Jennifer Love Hewitt, in the role originally cast with Alyson Hannigan.  For Gilbert, it will be considered a guest star role, ver Variety.

Tell me this doesn’t sound familiar — Fox has decided it ended up too far on the unscripted side and is considering more scripted fare in the future. On the shelf is five more Who’s Your Daddy? episodes, and on the shelf they will stay.

Internet TV network ManiaTV! FOX:

  • Minus Ashton Kutcher and Topher Grace, That 70’s Show has been picked up for an 8th season.
  • American Dad is set for a sneak peak on February 6 immediately following the Super Bowl, from Seth McFarlane. The show will join the schedule on a regular basis beginning May 1.
  • Family Guy returns to Fox on a weekly basis, also from Seth McFarlane, and also on May 1.
  • Life on a Stick (Paramount Network TV) debuts on March 23 at 930p following an episode of American Idol.

Terri L. Clark has been named Executive Director of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Foundation. The announcement was made by Steve Mosko, Chairman of the Television Academy’s Foundation and Todd P. Leavitt, President, Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Foundation.  Terri reports directly to Leavitt, and will oversee the day-to-day operations of the Academy’s Foundation, including the programs of its Education Programs and Services Department and the activities of the Archive of American Television.   In addition, she will be instrumental in working closely with Mosko and Leavitt on new initiatives, as well as spearheading the Foundation’s fundraising efforts.
