Cynopsis: Kids!
01/17/12

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, January 17, 2012, and this your first early morning briefing.

And the winners are… young adult movie fans with news that Lionsgate (Hunger Games) will acquire Summit Entertainment (Twilight Saga) in a cash and stock deal valued at $412.5 million. The integration of Summit’s domestic and international theatrical film operations will enhance Lionsgate’s production and distribution ability, while also extending its worldwide reach and bolstering its international sales unit. While Lionsgate and Summit are expected to continue and be active in the production and distribution of films, the combined company expects to achieve synergies through the consolidation of administrative and other costs.

Universal Music Enterprises (UMe) has entered into a partnership with music industry executives, Rick Dobbis and Richard Ellis, to create two kid/family aimed multi-platform kid music-centric companies, the music label myKaZoo Music (www.mykazoomusic.com) and the multi-channel video platform for K2-8 myKaZootv (www.mykazootv.com). First up, myKaZootv launches this month with a 24-hour interactive kids’ music video channel. Meanwhile, the myKaZoo Music label, in partnership with UMe, will debut on February 7, 2012 with its first release, Farmer Jason’s Nature Jams. To extend myKaZoo’s music and videos reach this year, the company is partnering with Kabillion TV On Demand.  Beginning March 2012, Kabillion will feature a block of KaZoo music videos, which will be updated weekly. Farmer Jason’s music videos will debut this winter on Akoo TV (www.akootv.com) in 160 Simon shopping malls across the US. Dobbis is a former President of Sony Music International and owner of the entertainment company R-DOG, and Ellis is founder/owner of the youth entertainment marketing company 12to20 and a former music label executive. UMe is the centralized US catalog and special markets entity for Universal Music Group.

Nickelodeon gives the go ahead on two new comedies with Lucas Cruikshank (aka Fred Figglehorn). The network has picked up the short-form series Fred: The Show (11×21) and has ordered a pilot titled Marvin, Marvin, which will star Cruikshank.  Additionally, Nickelodeon has also set a premiere date for its new Big Time Rush TV movie, and further information about its new series How To Rock.

  • Based on the popular Fred internet character and the network’s Fred TV movies, Fred: The Show is a single-camera series has already begun production and is set to debut in early 2012. Created and executive produced by Cruikshank, Fred: The Show is also executive produced by Varsity Pictures’ Brian Robbins and Sharla Sumpter Bridgett and The Collective’s Gary Binkow and Evan Weiss.
  • A multi-camera, half-hour comedy, the Marvin, Marvin pilot stars Cruikshank as a quirky, intergalactic new kid in school who clumsily tries to adapt to life as a human teen. • Nickelodeon will premiere the new Big Time Rush movie, Big Time Movie, on Saturday, March 10, 2012, featuring covers of class Beatles songs, including Help!, A Hard Day’s Night, We Can Work It Out and Revolution, and songs from Big Time Rush’s newest release Elevate.  The movie follows the group sets out on their first world tour and wind up mixed up in a James Bond-like mission, with their new teen spy pal Penny Lane, to save the world when their bags are switched at the airport.  Big Time Movie is written and executive produced by show creator Scott Fellows, and also executive produced by Lauren Levine (Bridge to Terabithia, Best Player).
  • In addition to premiering its new live-action comedy, How to Rock, on Saturday, February with back-to-back episodes at 8:30 and 9p, Nickelodeon will also, for the first time ever, debut the series on iTunes and Nick.com in January 2012 prior to the TV launch. The series stars Cymphonique Miller as teen Kacey Simon, the lead singer of her band, as they make their way through the ups, downs and evils of high school. Additionally, leading up the premiere, the Cymphonique: Ready to Rock! Collection of promotional web videos, which initially debuted last month, will continue to roll out on Nick.com, and the network’s mobile websites, Facebook page and iTunes. Produced by Nickelodeon in association with Alloy Entertainment, How to Rock will air regularly on Saturdays at 8:30p. The series is helmed and executive produced by David M.
