After two airings, ABC took sitcom Work It off its schedule. The show’s most recent airing last Tuesday delivered a 1.6 rating/5 share among A18-49 and 4.8 million total viewers, an approximate 30% decline from its Last Man Standing lead-in and a 20% drop from its premiere episode. In its 830p Tuesday time slot, ABC will air Last Man Standing repeats until further notice. Work It was produced by Bonanza Productions in association with Summer School Productions and Warner Bros. Television.
2012 Upfront Update: Telemundo Media will host its Upfront presentation on May 15 at 6p in New York’s American Museum of Natural History, in the museum’s Cullman Hall of the Universe. Prior to the formal presentation, Telemundo Media will offer client development meetings, a series of detailed conversations with partners and clients.
Spring premiere dates revealed by HBO:
- Game of Thrones debuts its second season with 10 episodes on April 1
- New comedy Girls opens April 15
- New political comedy series Veep starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus premieres April 22
- The film Game Change, chronicling Sen. John McCain’s 2008 political campaign premieres March 10
Taking a cue, AMC also revealed the premiere dates for new and returning original series in first and second quarters 2012:
- The second season of The Walking Dead resumes at 9p on February 12 and the live after show, Talking Dead also returns on February 12 at Midnight.
- New unscripted series Comic Book Men debuts February 12 at 10p. Executive produced by Kevin Smith (Clerks, Chasing Amy), Charlie Corwin’s Original Media (LA Ink, Storm Chasers) and Elyse Seiden (Red State), the series is set inside Smith’s comic shop, Jay and Silent Bob’s Secret Stash and explores the world of the neighborhood comic book store and the fanboy culture. The frosh season has six one-hour episodes.
- Mad Men marks the start of its fifth season March 25 at 9p with a two-hour episode. The following Sunday, April 1, Mad Men will air in its regular timeslot at 10p. Viewers can also view the fourth season of Mad Men via On Demand starting January 23 or watch/DVR the episodes in consecutive order from seasons one through four on Sunday mornings at 6a leading up to the fifth season premiere. Mad Men is produced by Lionsgate.
- A two-hour second season premiere of The Killing is set for April 1 at 8p. Starting the next Sunday, April 8, The Killing will slide into its regular time period at 9p on Sundays. Viewers can watch the entire 13-episode first season via On Demand starting March 5.
Next month, Hulu will premiere its first original scripted series, Battleground on February 14. The weekly workplace series will be set amidst a political campaign and explores the world of campaign workers and volunteers in a Wisconsin state Senate race. Battleground is shot documentary-style and is executive produced by JD Walsh, Hagai Shaham and Marc Webb.
Syfy ordered additional episodes of Warehouse 13, taking the fourth season to 20 total episodes. Season three of Warehouse 13 averaged more than 2.0 million viewers.
Making it official, TV Land approved the new series Have Faith, the spin-off series of Hot in Cleveland starring Cedric The Entertainer and Niecy Nash. Suzanne Martin is writing Have Faith as well as executive producing. TV Land has ordered 12 episodes of the series featuring Cedric as an R&B star-turned-minister, a character that was introduced in Hot in Cleveland. TV Land will premiere Have Faith in June.
A four-part exclusive television series, On Death Row from filmmaker Werner Herzog will debut on Investigation Discovery March 9 at 10p. The series was created as a companion to Herzog’s film, Into the Abyss that opened last September exploring the impact of life prison terms and the effects of the death penalty. The television series further interviews five other inmates on death row in Texas and Florida and offers an analysis of why people and the state kill. On Death Row is written and directed by Herzog and is produced by Erik Nelson of Creative Differences; Henry Schleiff and Sara Kozak are executive producers for Investigation Discovery.
Sundance Channel is renewing its fashion-rescue themed series All On The Line with Joe Zee for a third season. The series stars ELLE Creative Director Joe Zee and takes a behind-the-scenes look at the fashion industry. Authentic Entertainment produces the series.
Late last week, Lionsgate acquired Summit Entertainment in a deal involving cash and stock valued at $412.5 million. The transaction involving Summit’s domestic and international theatrical film operations bulks up Lionsgate’s production and distribution abilities and at the same time increases Lionsgate’s global reach.
Scripps Networks Interactive Inc. chose Rogers & Cowan as the agency of record for its Home Category brands including HGTV, DIY Network, their companion online websites and related branded products and services. The agency was selected after a competitive search and is charged with continuing to build HGTV and DIY Network as the recognized destinations for everything related to home from renovation to real estate to design.
Broadcasting pioneer, Jack Matranga died last Wednesday at the age of 86. Mr. Matranga was one of the original owners of local Sacramento station KTXL Channel 40. He served as CEO of the BMA Broadcast Group which operated KTLX Sacramento, KDVR in Denver and KPDX in Portland, OR. Mr. Matranga’s stations were some of the earliest affiliates for the FOX network.
David Dziedzic, 49 and SVP/Business Development with NAB died Saturday. Mr. Dziedzic joined NAB in January 1997 as SVP/Advertising and Services and took over as SVP/Business Development in November 2006. He is survived by his wife Diane and three sons. Mr. Dziedzic’s funeral will be this Wednesday, 1030a at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church in Vienna, VA. Instead of sending flowers, the family encourages memorial contributions be made to the National Brain Tumor Society’s Race for Hope, DC (Team Davey Doo) or Life with Cancer Center, 8411 Pennell Street, Fairfax, VA 22031.

ABC ordered Shonda Rhimes project Gilded Lillys to pilot. The drama is set in 1895 following the first grand opening of a luxury hotel in New York. The plot will be filled with family rivalries, scandals and conflict among the classes.
An untitled comedy project from Will & Grace executive producer Kari Lizer was ordered to pilot by NBC. The multi-camera project is about two friends, Nicole and Jen who lead very different lives but can’t live without one another. Warner Bros. Television is producing.
NBC also ordered to pilot The Frontier, one of the Western projects that have been in development at the network. The Frontier is set in the 1840s about a group that heads west from Missouri across unchartered territory. Shaun Cassidy will be an executive producer on the project with Prospect Park’s Jeff Kwatinetz and Josh Barry along with The West Wing’s Thomas Schlamme who will also direct the pilot. Sony Pictures Television is producing.
Production on A&E Network’s previously-announced new one-hour original scripted drama series, Longmire will begin this March in Santa Fe, New Mexico. A&E ordered 10 episodes of the crime thriller based on the Walt Longmire Mystery novels by author Craig Johnson. The series, debuting this summer stars Robert Taylor as Walt Longmire, the charismatic and loyal sheriff of Absaroka County, Wyoming. The cast also includes Katee Sackhoff, Lou Diamond Phillips, Bailey Chase, Cassidy Freeman and newcomer Adam Bartley. Longmire is produced by Warner Horizon Television.
Also from A&E, the network is in early development on two potential series:
- Bates Motel is billed as a prequel to Alfred Hitchcock’s famous thriller film, Psycho. The network is presently in script development on Bates Motel which will offer viewers an intimate understanding of Norman Bates’ childhood through his teen years and how his relationship with his mother and her love damaged Norman and turned him into a serial killer. Universal Television is producing.
- Those Who Kill is a Danish format based on the crime series by author Elsebeth Egholm. A&E holds the US format rights to the Danish series about violent serial killers and the two people who are trying to catch them – a police detective and a forensic psychiatrist. Imagine Television and Fox 21 are producing.
Legendary 13th century explorer, Marco Polo will be the centerpiece of a new epic scripted original series on Starz. The joint production of Marco Polo is executive produced by The Weinstein Company’s Harvey and Bob Weinstein; Ben Silverman of Electus; as well as John Fusco (Hidalgo, Young Guns and other films) who also is credited with writing and creating the series. Marco Polo is described as a “fantastical martial arts epic” and it details the adventurer’s early years in the court of Kublai Khan. Starz Entertainment will own the exclusive license to the domestic premium pay TV rights to Marco Polo as well as select digital rights to the series for its STARZ network. Starz’ Anchor Bay unit will distribute the series in the US via home video while The Weinstein Company and Electus’ worldwide distribution division, Electus International will handle all remaining rights.
National Geographic Channel (NGC) has approved two new series:
- Are You Tougher than a Boy Scout? (wt) follows adults “civilians” as they compete with savvy Boy Scouts in various challenges such as setting up a campsite, starting a fire and cooking dinner as fast as possible. Production on the six-episode series commences this spring and NGC plans on launching the series later this year. Thom Beers’ Original Productions, a FremantleMedia Company is producing.
- Wicked Tuna follows the high-stakes business of bluefin tuna fishing in Gloucester, Massachusetts. The series will introduce viewers to the highly competitive commercial tuna business and the crews on the fishing vessels named Tuna.Com, The Bounty Hunter, Hard Merchandise and Odysea. The series will premiere this spring in the US and worldwide later this year and is produced by Pilgrim Studios.
The Weather Channel Companies (TWCC) approved a new documentary series, Hurricane Hunters about Air Force pilots who fly plane into hurricanes to gather meteorological data from the storm’s center. The series from High Noon Entertainment has four half-hour episodes and is slated to premiere this coming July.
In the new original non-fiction series, Push Girls viewers will meet four dynamic, outspoken and beautiful women who through accident or illness have been paralyzed from the neck or waist down. Sundance Channel ordered 14 half-hour episodes from producer Gay Rosenthal (Ruby, Little People, Big World). Production is underway and Push Girls will premiere in April.
In other Sundance Channel updates, the network’s miniseries Top of the Lake will begin production February 7. The seven-part miniseries, set in New Zealand, will be directed by Jane Campion (The Piano, Portrait of a Lady) and Australian director Garth Davis; Campion is writing with Gerard Lee. The production stars Elisabeth Moss, Holly Hunter, Peter Mullan and David Wenham. Top of the Lake is co-produced by Sundance Channel, BBC TWO and UKTV in Australia and New Zealand. BBC Worldwide distributes the series internationally.
On the heels of ABC’s One Life to Live being cancelled and the finale airing last Friday, Hillary B. Smith, who played Nora “Red” Buchanan on OLTL from 1992 to 2012, is joining CBS’ The Bold and the Beautiful. Smith will play Dr. Stacy, a psychiatrist who specializes in sex therapy and her first appearance will be early March.
Former soap opera star, Susan Lucci (Erica Kane on ABC’s All My Children) will host and narrate the new original series Deadly Affairs for Investigation Discovery. Production begins in March on the 10-episode series that chronicles real-life love triangles to passionate love affairs that end in crimes of passion. The series is scheduled to premiere in primetime in fall 2012 and is produced for Investigation Discovery by Sirens Media.

Thursday A18-49 Analysis: CBS was the champ Thursday with a 3.5/9 among A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen. At 8p, CBS won with a combo of The Big Bang Theory and the premiere of new sitcom Rob! at an average of 4.7/13 (Rob! delivered a stand-alone 4.1/11 at 830p) followed by FOX’s Bones at 2.4/6, ABC’s Wipeout in third at 2.2/6 and in fourth was NBC’s debut comeback of 30 Rock and Parks and Recreation at an average of 1.9/5. ABC was tops at 9p with Grey’s Anatomy at 3.8/10 and CBS’ Person of Interest was second at 3.2/8. Also this hour, FOX debuted new series The Finder at 1.7/4 which ranked fifth. Then at 10p, CBS was #1 once again with The Mentalist at 2.7/7, ABC’s Private Practice was next at 2.3/6 and NBC’ The Firm was third at 1.0/3.
