Cynopsis: DIGITAL

01/12/10

Good morning, it’s Tuesday, January 12, 2010, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

In a last-minute ruling, The Supreme Court blocked YouTube from streaming the controversial Prop. 8 trial which began yesterday in California, acting on an appeal from conservative defenders of California’s ban on same-sex marriage, per the LA Times. The trial will be still be videotaped but transmission of “real-time streaming” of the proceedings will only be permitted to other rooms within the confines of the San Francisco courthouse. The temporary ban will remain in effect through Wed., Jan. 13.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

Much like the average cable bill, the cost of a 30-second spot has quadrupled in the last 20 years, according to new research from TNS Media Intelligence. Cost increases have helped the big game generate $2.17 billion in network sales since 1989 from a total of 210 different advertisers and more than 1,400 commercial messages. In recent years, the void left by the exit of long-time sponsors such as Pepsi, GM and Fed Ex has been filled by new advertisers, accounting for 20-25% of the ad roster since 2005. However rates this year are tracking down, according to TNS, with CBS selling :30 units for between $2.5-$2.8 million.

Technology can sometimes pose a problem for lazy screenwriters who need to isolate their characters from civilization before throwing them to the wolves. Lack of a cell phone signal always works, but it’s getting a little old. Check out this YouTube compilation as proof that the well has run dry! (Courtesy of NYmag.com’s Vulture blog.)

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

Online video aggregator Break Media launched its own iPhone app on New Year’s Eve, reporting “tens of thousands” of downloads during the first few days. The guy-focused video app allows you to browse, view, rate and comment on funny videos by channel or popularity.

WE tv

WE tv has also developed a free iPhone app to coincide with the contest. As with WE tv’s “Cutest Kids Costume” app, users can use it to view, upload and vote on their favorite photos.
