Cynopsis: Classified Advantage 01/11/11 Good morning – it’s Tuesday, January 11, 2011, and this is your weekly issue of Cyn opsis: Classified Advantage! Imagine this, you are at a black tie affair, a fundraiser with about 500 other people in an auditorium setting. There is a podium, and behind the podium is about 50 other people, still nicely dressed but certainly not tailored clothing, some even ill fitted. I come up to the podium. “There is a homeless man in my town, his name is Samuel. Whenever I saw Samuel, I’d give him a couple of bucks, but Samuel almost always used the money for liquor. I realized by giving to the needy, I was making myself feel good, but I wasn’t really helping Samuel. So I started buying him sandwiches instead. “After I bought Samuel a sandwich, I finished some other errands and saw Samuel sell the sandwich to go get some booze. Enterprising guy this Samuel. “One day I sat next to Samuel and I asked him if he could have anything in this world, a mansion, a yacht, a limousine with full time driver, anything, what would he want. Samuel said, ‘a thermostat, because some times in gets kind of chilly out here.’ “Anything in the world and Samuel wanted a thermostat. “There has to be a better way to help people. And maybe there is. Back On My Feet is an organization that gives homeless people who really want a better, different life a chance. No I’m wrong, Back On My Feet doesn’t give anybody anything, the people there have to earn it. “How many people sitting in front of me, were up at 5am this morning? (About 75 people stand) At 5:30 this morning it was 25 degrees out, of those standing how many of you were outside running? (All sit down.)” I then turn to the people behind me and say, “how many of you were out running at 5:30 this morning? (All fifty people stand) “There are no free hand outs at Back On My Feet, you have to run, every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 5:30 in the morning for a month to receive counseling on how to get a job. And that is just one step of many, and through out you must continue to run, or you are out of the program. “Sounds tough for a charity, and that’s the point, Back On My Feet is not a charity, it is an organization that helps those who have decided they want to help themselves, just like these 50 people standing behind me. “So I am not here to ask for your money or even your time. I am here to ask you to hire some of the best employees you’ll ever have. They have proven themselves to be accountable and responsible. “You could hire a 19 year old whose working only to pay his phone bill, or you could hire someone from Back On My Feet, who works because they want that sliver, meager part of our existence that is so intrinsic to us, that the only time we even think about it, is when something goes wrong. “They will work because they want their own bed, their own bathroom, and yes my Dear Samuel, their own thermostat. “They will work because they no longer wish to be invisible, unheard and unkempt. They will work because it gives them integrity, and respectability. “Most of the people standing behind me have made very bad decisions in the past and it would be easy for us to dismiss them. It would be easy for them to stay at the shelters and have all the essentials provided to them. “But these people and the others at Back On My Feet have decided to take the hard road. And they have stayed on that hard road so people like you might give them a chance. “So I guess that is what I am really asking for: I’m asking that you give these hard working people a chance to recover what they gave away a long time ago, but are fighting everyday to get back. A real life. “And if you do this, if you take this chance, I promise you that in ten years, maybe less, that some of these fifty wonderful people that are behind me right now, will be sitting in tuxedos and gowns, right next to you.” Writing a speech about something you care about is an important exercise because when you apply for a job at a company, you should write and practice a speech about that company, like this one. Many companies don’t lend themselves as easily to the passion I have for Back On My Feet, but find it. While you’re at it, write a speech about yourself too. Henry Ford once said, “Enthusiasm is the sparkle in your eyes, the swing in your gait, the grip of your hand, the irresistible surge of will and energy to execute your ideas.” How many other potential candidates are going to have that? Economic News Unemployment dropped to 9.4%, according to the latest figures from the Bureau of Statistics, nonfarm jobs increased by 103,000, with the greatest increases being in leisure, hospitality and health care. Most other industries showed little change. Nest Issue: Shuffle Board If you have any specific questions or topics of particular interest you’d like our Experts to address, please let me know! You can reach me – John Cox – directly at [email protected] . We are always on the look out for more Experts to advise our readers – if you’re a headhunter, job coach, career advisor, etc., and may be interested in contributing to this edition from time to time, please contact me at [email protected] . Oftentimes the employer is trying to catch you off guard to see how you handle the pressure. Despite all of the preparation and rehearsing you’ve done, you’re bound to be blindsided. When this happens, don’t panic. Instead of blurting out and answer or stumbling along, trying to piece together your response, here’s what I recommend: Take a few seconds to compose your thoughts. Don’t be intimidated by the silence. That silence will speak volumes to the interviewer. He or she will realize that you’re not impulsive, but are seriously considering the question and taking your time to give the best response. You can also “buy” time by asking the interviewer to clarify his or her question. For example, let’s say you’re asked, “What would you do if you thought one of your coworkers was falsifying his expense account?” Before responding, buy yourself some time by asking: “You mean, if I knew it for a fact or just had my suspicions?” or “Does this person work for me or is it a peer?” Again, this approach can send positive signals to the interviewer. It shows you want to have all the facts before making your decision. Okay, so now that you’re prepared to respond to hard ball questions, here are five more you might encounter during a job interview: What was your toughest decision ever? Hopefully you’ll have prepared for this one so you don’t have to stammer and think back. Pick a decision that makes you shine and explain how you came to it. Where could you use improvement? Stay positive and be careful not to reveal a weakness. Pick an area in your profession you want to learn about – an area that isn’t critical to the job at hand. Tell the interviewer you’re interested in learning more about such and such in the next few months. Define success then tell me how you measure up. Simple question IF you’re prepared for it. Give your own definition of success as asked. Maybe success to you is setting a lofty goal and achieving it. Maybe it’s having a balanced life. What was the hardest part about your last job? The interviewer thinks whatever was difficult for you in your last job will be a problem in the next. Rather than come out and name something specific, try to focus on the aspects of your job you liked better than the others. How much money do you want? Try to put this off as long as possible. If it’s asked early in the interview, say you’d like to come back to that after you have more of an understanding of the position. If later, ask what is the range the company had in mind? If it’s less than you were hoping, don’t worry. When a company really wants you, you’ll be surprised what can change. If the salary from your last job is brought up, indicate that the responsibilities are very different and you wouldn’t make a comparison. When a classified ad has a misspelled word or and obvious grammar mistake, should I call it to the attention of the interviewer? Is it ever a trick or test to see who is aware enough to notice or is it just laziness and might actually hurt my chances of getting the job by bringing it up? Unless you’re applying for a copy editor’s job, you shouldn’t call attention to the interviewer of the mistake you noticed. It’s an honest mistake and not a test to see if you notice it. You’re evaluated on whether you have the skills, expertise and knowledge to do the job. This is 100% more important then noticing a misspelled word. If you did mention the mistake to the interviewer you could be creating unnecessary conflict that undermines your chances for the job. Focus on the job and not the ad. What you can do for the company. Why you are the best hire. How far away from a potential job can I live and have the company not consider it a negative in my hiring? The maximum distance should be whatever doesn’t negatively affect your availability and commitment to the job. Each situation is different and thus it’s difficult to place an exact number. Whether you fly in for the week (M-F) and make your own housing arrangements, take a 1.5 hour train ride or drive two hours to the job, what’s important is your ability to get the work done, show your commitment and not let the commute undermine your quality of work and overall performance. Emphasize to the employer that the commute will not get in the way of your work. Have creative solutions ready in case he or she challenges you on this. Think of ways to turn your long commute into a positive. For example, you could take advantage of a long train ride to make calls to prospective clients, prepare for important meetings and otherwise be a more productive versus less productive employee.
