~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

ABC handed early pick-up renewals involving six series for the 2011-2012 season. The pick-ups include those for Castle, Cougar Town, Grey’s Anatomy, The Middle, Modern Family and Private Practice.

CNN released more celebrity guests appearing during the inaugural week of Piers Morgan Tonight opening next Monday at 9p. The guest list includes George Clooney, Howard Stern, Ricky Gervais, former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice as well as previously announced Oprah Winfrey who will appear on the premere episode.

AMC is renewing Mad Men for a fifth season though the network has not confirmed the new season’s premiere date.

ABC Family renewed two of its series:  Pretty Little Liars for a second season tentatively slated to return summer 2011. Pretty Little Liars, produced by Alloy Entertainment in association with Warner Horizon Television, presently is airing its first season on Mondays at 8p.  The second order goes to The Secret Life of the American Teenager for a fourth season premiering March 28 at 8p.

National Geographic Channel launches a new season of Explorer now airing on a new night starting January 17 at 10p. The opening episode, American Hostage, profiles journalist Terry Anderson who was held captive for almost seven years by radical Muslims. Explorer is produced by National Geographic Television for National Geographic Channels.

Tennis Channel extended multi-year on-air deals with Hall of Famer Martina Navratilova and Grand Slam champ/Olympic gold medalist Lindsay Davenport. Navratilova will continue as the network’s lead commentator for all Grand Slam telecasts, partnering with Bill Macatee, including the upcoming Australian Open coverage beginning January 17 at 7p. Davenport will join the Australian Open team for the first time, offering match analysis, appearing in features and handling sideline news and interviews.

MTV premieres its new scripted series Skins at 10p following a new episode of Jersey Shore airing on a different night and time slot. Skins was created by father and son partners Bryan Elsley and Jamie Brittain and includes an ensemble cast of unknown teen actors as they juggle complicated relationships, friendships and daily life in their teenage years. Elsley writes and executive produces the US version and similar to the original UK series, Skins stars and is co-created by the young talent involved. E1 Entertainment and Company Pictures, a division of ALL3MEDIA co-produce the series.

PBS debuts a sophomore season of Pioneers of Television on January 18 (check local listings), the series offering inside stories of early visionaries of television with specific insight into four popular genres: science fiction, westerns, crime dramas and local kids’ TV. The new episodes are narrated by Kelsey Grammer. Encore airings of three episodes from the first season of the series that looks at the early years of sitcoms, late night and variety shows will air Tuesdays February 15 through March 1 at 8p on PBS.

Last Friday’s third season premiere of Merlin on Syfy attracted 1.34 million total viewers during the 10p hour.

On Sunday, Showtime debuted three premieres during a free preview weekend. Early numbers are from the network which includes only its subscribers although final results have not been released from Nielsen:

  • Season four bow of Californication posted its best season premiere ever with 848,000 viewers at 9p and a total of 1.12 million for the night. Previously, the season three premiere tallied 821,000 total viewers.
  • New series Episodes launched at 930p with 768,000 total viewers and 902,000 viewers for the night. Episodes retained 91% of its Californication lead-in.
  • Series premiere of Shameless at 10p has become Showtime’s largest drama series premiere in seven years with 982,000 total viewers and 1.3 million total viewers for the night.

FOX debuted new animated series Bob’s Burgers on Sunday at 830p delivering a 4.5 rating with A18-49.

Young Broadcasting, LLC retained Cox Reps to represent the broadcasting company for national sales. Cox Reps will form a specific Young Broadcasting sales group based in New York, Los Angeles and Chicago, dedicated exclusively to Young Broadcasting’s 10 stations nationwide. Additionally, Young Broadcasting’s Adam Young, Inc. the television representation firm founded in 1944 by Adam Young will conclude operations at the end of this month.

~ DISTRIBUTION, CLEARANCE & CARRIAGE ~

RXsyndication is teaming with a Las Vegas-based production company on the new 13-episode series “process server. The episodes follow process servers in Las Vegas as they try to serve celebrities and other clients in Las Vegas and Hollywood. National syndication for the series will begin in third quarter this year.

Spanish network Vme picked up the action/adventure drama Aguila Roja (Red Eagle). The family series, featuring the courageous crime-fighter Red Eagle will be seen for the first time in the US and Vme will air the series on Mondays at 10p. The series is currently beginning its third season in Spain and in that country the series recently won five awards from Spain’s 2010 Television Academy (Academia de las Ciencias y las Artes de Television). Globomedia produces the series shot in Spain.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Lifetime ordered five pilots:

  • Against the Wall about a female police officer (Rachael Carpani) who instigates family arguments when she joins the Chicago Police Department’s internal affairs unit. Universal Cable Productions produces.
  • Exit 19 centers on a single mom who is also a homicide detective for the NYPD. ABC Studios and CBS Television Studios produces.
  • Criminal Behavior is about a San Diego cop (Sherry Stringfield) who has two kids and is contemplating divorce while her partner (Jamie Lynn-Sigler) is recently engaged. Lou Diamond Phillips also co-stars. Sony Television is producing.
  • Michael Sardo is behind an untitled pilot about a celebrity psychologist who becomes the manager of a hospital psychiatric ward. Carrie-Anne Moss stars and Universal Cable Productions produces.
  • Meet Jane stars Molly Parker as a woman recruited by the FBI to spy on her husband played by Rick Schroder. Warner Horizon Television produces.

ABC is partnering with Salma Hayek to develop a miniseries Wicked based on the book, The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire that also became the popular Broadway musical. ABC is planning on an eight-part miniseries based more on the book than the musical with ABC Studios producing along with Hayek’s Ventanarosa Productions and her production partner Jose Tamez. Hayek, Tamez and Erik Jendresen, who also is penning the script, will all serve as executive producers. Wicked is a retelling of the Wizard of Oz story from the Wicked Witch’s perspective.

Former CBS Survivor champ Yul Kwon will host the new PBS series America Revealed which launches in the fall, cites B&C. Kwon most recently worked for the FCC as deputy chief of the consumer and governmental affairs bureau.

Friday A18-49 Analysis: FOX beat all Friday night, taking the A18-49 demo with a 3.0/10, according to final national ratings from Nielsen. At 8p, the AT&T Cotton Bowl Pre-Game coverage and the start of the bowl game took FOX to #1 with a 2.3/8 while CBS’ Medium and Univision’s Eva Luna tied for second place at 1.4/5 each. FOX and the AT&T Cotton Bowl trounced the competition during 9p at 3.3/10 and a tie occurred for #2 between ABC’s Primetime: What Would You Do? and Univision’s Triunfo del Amor at 1.7/5 apiece. FOX continued to lead through 10p with the final hour of the LSU vs. Texas A&M Cotton Bowl game at 3.2/10 and ABC was the solo network at #2 with 20/20 delivering a 1.7/5.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Effective immediately, Universal Networks International (UNI) named Tariq Syed to the newly-minted position of Managing Director/Central Europe. Tariq will head the continuing expansion of NBC Universal’s international pay-TV channels in the territory. Tariq reports to Colin McLeod, Managing Director/Emerging Markets EMEA.

John Shea named as the third “CMO in Residence” on NBC Universal’s Integrated Sales Marketing (ISM) team. John joins the ISM team in this quarterly rotational role during first quarter 2011. John previously was EVP/Integrated Marketing and Branded Content at MTV Networks.

FOX Soccer appointed Jason Wormser as VP/Production to supervise all productions via FOX Soccer Channel and FOX Soccer Plus encompassing live match telecasts and studio shows. Jason will also head a team charged with integrating new components into coverage of top-level competitions including UK’s Barclays Premier League and the UEFA Champions League in addition to live shows such as FOX Soccer Match Day and Super Sunday +. In his new position, Jason reports to Dermot McQuarrie, SVP/Programming and Production, FOX Soccer.

Theano Apostolou joined Starz Entertainment as SVP/Corporate Communications and Programming Publicity. Theano will manage the network’s communications direction, programming publicity and external affairs. In this position, Theano replaces Tom Southwick as the top communications executive for the company after his retirement in 2010. Reporting to Bill Myers, President/COO, Starz Entertainment, Theano will be based in Los Angeles. Prior to this appointment, Theano was SVP/Publicity, Talent Relations and Promotional Events for AMC.

Marla Newman became SVP/Sales with FOX Sports Interactive Media (FSIM) as of Monday. FSIM is the digital production and distribution unit of the FOX Sports Media Group and houses FOXSports.com on MSN, Yardbarker.com, Whatifsports.com and Scout.com. Marla, in her new position, will be based in New York reporting to Jeff Husvar, EVP/GM. Previously, Marla served as Group VP for MTVN Digital, heading digital and mobile sales for websites such as ComedyCentral.com, Spike.com and TVLand.com.
