Good Morning. It’s Tuesday, January 10, 2012, and this is your weekly issue of Cynopsis: Classified Advantage!

Some of what you’ve read in books and articles written by experts, sounds sensible but in some cases, simply aren’t always true.

Here are some harsh yet credible generalizations.

Being social can be more important than being productive in getting promoted.  It sounds terrible, but what gets more attention, Jim’s unbelievable year end report or Jen’s gorgeous, pitch perfect rendering of “Just the Way You Look Tonight,” on Karaoke night.  While Jim should be the star, in reality, it’s often Jen.  And while Jen’s singing should have nothing to do with being promoted, when people look at her, they get a good feeling because of it.  Don’t underestimate the social aspect of your job, it’s far more important than you think.

Unless you’re a male.  I do not agree with this but too often, it’s true.  The jerk alpha male gets promoted before the more cordial counterparts.  Why?  He’s decisive, right or wrong, there is no wavering with this Neanderthal.  The only thing worse than this, is a boss who cannot make up their mind about anything, and work comes to a screeching halt. 

Women, unfortunately, can rarely advance with this type of behavior.  Our society is so obscenely outdated, that alpha males are seen in a positive manner while their female equivalents are not.

People who have a sense of entitlement may get bigger raises.  I, along with most people, do not care for people who feel entitled to anything, but in this circumstance, one’s sense of entitlement creates more confidence and even aggressiveness in negotiations.  If you think aggressiveness doesn’t help during negotiations, take a seminar from Donald Trump or Drew Rosenhaus.

Women, when being interviewed, dress down.  Studies have shown that less attractive women are more readily hired in certain jobs than more attractive applicants.  There are two theories that may explain this: 

  • If a man is hiring, he may shy away from offering the position to the more attractive candidate to avoid any confusion or gossip as to why she was hired.
  • If a woman is doing the hiring, and these are not my conclusions – so please no emails, consciously or unconsciously, the attractive female candidate, may pose a threat to the woman who makes the decision.

Certainly, this is not the case for all interviewers but it happens enough to create statistical evidence that it exists.

I’m sorry if these generalizations offend anyone, but remember, they are generalizations, therefore not true in every case.  It’s just a shame they are true, in any case.

Stand Out Above the Competition

The competition for jobs is fierce in today’s economy, so if you are searching for a job you are going to have to find a way to stand out above the competition.  How do you do this?  By showcasing the leadership skills that hiring managers are searching for.

All of your job-search-related correspondence should reinforce these important leadership characteristics:  goal setting, motivating others, coaching, problem solving, vision, setting an example, agreeableness, conscientiousness, and open-mindedness.  How does your correspondence stand up?  Here’s an easy way to find out.

Evaluating Your Job-Search Correspondence for Leadership Focus

Take out the cover letter you wrote when applying for your most recent position and circle all of the parts of the letter that, in some way, suggest that you are effective at setting goals.  Next, circle those things that reference your ability to motivate and coach others.  Finally, circle items that tell the reader you are a problem-solver and visionary.

Perform the same diagnostic on your resume.

How many circles did you make?  If you only found three or four instances, you are not portraying yourself as a leader.

Now, try reverse-engineering this process. Find opportunities to insert powerful language that emphasizes these key traits.  Your objective is to underscore to the hiring manager that you’re not only qualified for the position, but exhibit those special leadership traits that most candidates don’t possess.

Highlighting Your Leadership Traits During the Interview

Take a similar approach when preparing for each job interview. But focus on those leadership traits that can best be demonstrated on a face-to-face basis.  As you rehearse your answers to potential questions, think about ways to show that you are agreeable, conscientious, and open-minded and to demonstrate how you have set an example for the members of your team.

The Know-How of a Manager, the Finesse of a Leader

Driving traffic to your site is very important and a concern to every website owner.  Some common ways to drive more traffic to your website includes utilizing search engine optimization.  This involves figuring out the best keywords for your website’s niche and using them in articles on your website to ensure that your site can be found when people search for those keywords. 

Another popular way to drive traffic to your site is to use social media to market your website.  Sharing your content on Facebook, Twitter and other social media websites is a good way to promote your personal website and get more traffic.

You may also want to submit articles to article directories such as ezinearticles.com and articledashboard.com to promote your website.  Attaching author biographies to the articles you post on these article directories will allow those reading your articles to visit your website.

If I apply to a company that uses scanners for the incoming resumes, how long into the process before a human reads it?

Many companies are turning to the use of electronic or computer systems to scan their applicant resumes prior to human eyes ever seeing them.  If you know that a company you are applying to is using an electronic screening process, you should tailor your resume for this type of pre-screening.  In addition to making certain your resume is rich in keyword content for the electronic scanner, you should make sure that it is also written to appear professional to the person who sees it after it has passed through the pre-screening process.

It is impossible to determine a set time frame for the screening process when an electronic screening system is being used.  Once the screening software has narrowed down the batch of applicants, the company will begin human scanning to further narrow the pool to a group of applicants they wish to interview.  This could take hours, days, or even weeks and months.

Matt Anderson was named Chief Strategy/Business Development Officer with Yell.  In his new role, Matt will drive the company’s digital strategies while developing international partnerships and working closely with the company’s digital team.  Previously, Matt worked for Booz & Co. where he served as Partner in the consumer media and digital practice. 

As of January 1, 2012, Jeff Pomeroy left his position at Turner Sports to become President of JDP Communications, a full-service boutique PR sports and entertainment company based in Atlanta. 

Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, Inc. has tapped four executives to join its publishing and digital division:

  • Russell Brown was hired as SVP/Consumer Products Licensing in charge of developing and negotiating new merchandising opportunities for all MSLO brands.  Russell previously worked for Marvel Entertainment and Iconix Brand Group, Inc.
  • Charlie Tiersch was named VP/Business Development joining from NBCUniversal.
  • Colleen Nowers joins as AVP/Business Development also from NBCUniversal.
  • Claudio Goldbarg takes on the new role as SVP/Publishing and Digital Media Operations to spearhead all financial duties for MSLO’s Publishing practice.

CBS Sports Network hired former Michigan State basketball player Mateen Cleaves as a College Basketball Studio Analyst.  Mateen will work with analyst Wally Szczerbiak, insider Jon Rothstein and host Adam Zucker on Inside College Basketball each Wednesday.

Effective immediately, Lorri Leighton was promoted to SVP/Programming with Atlas Media where she reports to Bruce David Klein, President/Executive Producer.  In her new position, Lorri will spearhead all current programming at Atlas and focus on managing showrunners, developing production teams and being the company’s liaison with network clients. 

Starting January 3, Walter Augustin took on new responsibilities as VP/Regional Sales Manager for FOX Stations Sales in Chicago, overseeing all national sales activity. Prior to this appointment, Walter was NSM for WFLD FOX Chicago.

CBS News appointed Jeff Glor as Anchor of the Sunday edition of the CBS Evening News.  Since November 2011, Jeff has served as Special Correspondent for CBS This Morning and he will continue in this role.  Most recently, Jeff was the News Anchor of The Early Show since January 2011 and he has been the anchor of the Saturday edition of the CBS Evening News and a national correspondent across CBS News broadcasts.  He joined CBS News in 2007.

MEC North America’s CEO Marla Kaplowitz announced a slew of new executive hires and promotions:

  • Dennis Donlin was named President Team AT&T joining from Mediabrands where he served as EVP/Managing Director.
  • Michele Pauchuk is now President of MEC Canada reporting to Marla Kaplowitz. Michele joins from Initiative where she was EVP/Managing Director. 
  • Dave Crammond received a promotion to SVP/Managing Director of Trading and Operations, reporting to Michele Pauchuk.  Tracy Bellamy was also upped to VP/Managing Partner of Connection Planning.
  • Julia Jones was hired as Managing Partner for the Colgate Palmolive account in North America. Julia is based in New York and reports to Eamonn Store, President/Global Solutions.
  • Abby Spatz was also tagged as Managing Partner to head the Chanel account in the US.  She, too, reports to Eamonn Store. 
  • Courtenay Harry joins as Senior Partner/Planning Director to spearhead media planning for Pepperidge Farm part of the agency’s Campbell’s Soup business. Courtenay reports to Beth Egan, Managing Partner/Account Director for Campbell’s Soup.
  • Rick Acompora will become Managing Partner/Account Director to work on numerous clients, reporting to Marla Kaplowitz.
  • Christine Stack joins as a Partner/Director of Senior Talent Acquisition, reporting to Michelle Guglielmelli, Managing Partner/Human Resources and Talent Management.
  • JP James started his new position as Director/Engagement Planning for AT&T last July, reporting to Dennis Donlin. 
  • The MEC Interaction team hired Jitka Petrickova as Managing Director/Digital West.
  • Cathy Salazar was elevated to Senior Partner/Practice Lead of Search and Kristine Segrist becomes Managing Director/Social
  • Amy Elkins was added to MEC as Partner/Digital Director, reporting to Jeff Killingsworth, Managing Partner/GM of the agency’s Los Angeles office.
  • Derek Bhopalsingh was tapped by MEC Canada as VP/Managing Partner of MEC Interaction.

Beginning January 17, Amy Entelis will join CNN in the newly-created role as SVP/Talent and Content Development for CNN Worldwide. Amy will oversee show development including pilots and program acquisitions, talent recruitment and strategy for all CNN networks encompassing CNN, HLN and CNN International.  Based in New York, Amy will report to Mark Whitaker, CNN Worldwide Managing Editor.

Studios 121 tagged Luis Estrada as President.  Luis was one of the co-founders of Studios 121 and has held the positions of COO and President/Sales and Marketing in the past.  In his new role, Luis will manage overall operations, sales and general management.  He replaces Michael Fletcher who has departed the company to pursue other business opportunities.

Chelle Lews joins Lead Generation Technologies to head the media acquisition team as VP/Media.  She will spearhead media acquisition for TV, radio, internet and new media and will report to Preston Haglin, Managing Director. 

Gracie Mercado advances to Director/Human Resources at the YES Network where she will supervise all facets of the network’s HR duties including employee relations, compensation and benefits and recruitment. 

Three executives were hired at A&E Network to strengthen its programming team.  Joining the East Coast non-fiction programming group are Drew Tappon as VP/Non-Fiction and Alternative Programming; Brad Holcman as Senior Director/Non-Fiction and Alternative Programming; and Nicole Reed as Director/Non-Fiction and Alternative Programming.  All three will be charged with developing new non-fictions series for the network and to further manage several current series for the network while reporting to Elaine Frontain Bryant, SVP/Non-Fiction and Alternative Programming at A&E.

Amy Coleman was tapped as Executive Producer for CBS Television Distribution’s new syndicated first-run talk show Jeff Probst.  Amy was a consulting producer on the show’s pilot and has been a former supervising producer for The Oprah Winfrey Show.

30-year veteran at the National Weather Service, Thomas Niziol joins The Weather Channel Companies (TWCC) as its new winter weather expert.  Thomas will be the main source of meteorological content, expertise and analysis for winter weather conditions.  He would be featured during winter weather coverage on The Weather Channel and also contribute his knowledge via the company’s digital platforms. 

NBCUniversal named Adam Stotsky as GM of G4, effective immediately.  Adam will oversee all areas at G4 including programming, development, production, marketing, press and publicity and digital operations while reporting to Bonnie Hammer, Chairman, NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment and Cable Studios.

Effective immediately, MediaVest USA promoted Christine Merrifield to President/Video Investment and Activation.  In her new role, Christine is charged with managing all facets involving video investment and activation across broadband, broadcast, cable, local and out-of-home in addition to investment operations.  Christine will further remain on the agency’s Executive Team.  She reports to Bill Tucker, CEO.

Spanish Broadcasting System Inc. (SBS) elevated Zev Levy to Director/Sales of SBS Los Angeles.  Zev, who was previously the GSM for KLAX 97.9FM “La Raza” and KXOL 96.3FM “Latino” stations, will now supervise the consolidated sales efforts for both L.A. stations including SBS Interactive and SBS Entertainment. 

Beginning June 2012, Preston Beckman, EVP/Strategic Program Planning and Research with Fox Broadcasting Company will take on the new position as Senior Strategist for Fox Networks Group.  Preston will offer his knowledge and strategic insight into scheduling, programming and research for all FNG entertainment divisions.  He will report directly to Peter Rice, Chairman/Entertainment, Fox Networks Group. 

Matthew Mancinelli, the former SVP/Worldwide Distribution of Shankly Productions has exited the company to form Mance Media, a global television distribution company.  Based in Hollywood, Mance Media acquires, licenses, co-produces and co-finances programming for the international marketplace.
