Advantage
02/08/11
Good morning – it’s Tuesday, February 8, 2011, and this is your weekly issue of Cyn opsis: Classified Advantage!
Get nervous prior and during an interview? Of course you do, you’re human and there is a lot at stake.
There are many theories and advice about how to calm your nerves but I know of only one that really works, and it’s really quite simple; do the impossible.
Yes, that’s right, do the impossible. Now, what is impossible for you may be entirely different for what is impossible for me.
A couple of weeks ago I wrote about high school coaches and their worth to everyday life. Here’s another one that only the great coaches employ, the athletes hate it, but it does more for the individual and the team than one can possibly understand.
At Wilton High School, we had to run a three mile uphill trek in a certain amount of time. Each athlete got their own time due to running experience and size. My time was 20 minutes and 15 seconds. Impossible. At the beginning of each practice you did your three mile run, if you did not finish in time, you went back and finished practice with everyone else. If you did finish on time, you didn’t have to run it anymore. It took me 8 days of running that three mile mountain, but on that eighth day I finished in 19 minutes and 48 seconds. Nothing came even close to making me more proud of what I had just accomplished than that stupid run.
Coaches do this so when the odds are against you, when other teams would give up, ours never would. Our coach would remind us of that run, of how we did something we thought was impossible, and yet each and everyone of us achieved our times. At the end of each speech, he would always say, nothing is impossible.
My Senior year we won our 12th consecutive state title.
When I coached girls lacrosse, I asked each of the 28 athletes what was the farthest they had ever run. The longest was three miles. One day during preseason, we went to a park that had a four mile loop. I told the girls we were all going to run it … twice. That’s right, eight miles. If you couldn’t finish, no problem, just don’t quit until you had to, run as far as you can and then stop. I didn’t what anyone getting hurt.
The girls were angry in ways only teenage girls can be angry. It’s an ugly thing. They cursed, they hated me, and they were very upset. Until something quite unexpected happened, when the 28th girl finished her 8 mile run, they all ran and hugged each other, some even cried. Everyone one of them had made it.
We won games that season that we had no right in winning, one game we were down by 5 goals with two minutes to play, and won by two. We won those games because the girls were tremendous athletes, but also because impossible no longer existed. And if I have done my job properly, they still don’t believe in impossible. In the five previous years, we had never won more games than we lost, but that year, the year that impossible disappeared, we finished third in the state, losing to the eventual state champions 15-16.
Not all impossibles are physical, and I certainly don’t want non-runners to go and sign up for a marathon. I don’t want anyone to hurt themselves. One of my impossibles that I have yet to complete is reading a 1,400 page book on the life of Benjamin Franklin. How about making a successful pass on a trapeze or finishing the NYT Sunday crossword, in pen.
The point is this, if you remove the impossible, then the possible becomes more probable. I cannot stress how important this is. With each impossible you remove, you remove fear, and confidence will take its place.
And let’s face it, if you can finish the NYT’s Sunday crossword in ink, how can you ever be nervous in front of an interviewer again, knowing that he can’t, and probably hasn’t even tried.
Nest Issue: Games

A Global Human Capital Study conducted by IBM revealed that 40% of responding organizations cited a lack of leadership capability as a primary concern for success and future growth. There are a multitude of definitions about leadership capability. To provide some powerful but simple meaning to how leadership translates into productivity, it is important to identify the essence of what drives leadership capability. Leadership begins and ends with one’s attitude. If a leader’s attitude lacks optimism and a propensity to solve problems with a win/win perspective, it is virtually impossible to create organizational success. Whether that attitude operates at the executive or the front line level, what a leader brings to the organization is quite naturally guided by one’s perspective on self, life, and business in general.
So what are the implications for organizations whose leaders are not operating with an optimistic attitude? The answers appear complex but are relatively simple. Productivity is lessened, relationships become fragile, communication is likely unclear and confusing, and the morale of those working most closely with the leader is less than ideal. Translated: leadership attitude impacts productivity, therefore, revenue, profits, and growth are affected.
Expert knowledge is gained from many sources: reading, role models, and working with mentors and coaches. At the end of the day, it’s the person with the optimistic attitude and penchant for getting things done through others that makes for leadership success. A person with excellent skills and knowledge but a mediocre attitude cannot be as effective as a leader with appropriate skills and knowledge, but a great attitude. That is because attitude drives action! The great news is that attitude is a choice. It’s the leader’s secret tool to achieve success.
How is your attitude? Does it empower you or hold you back? How is your team’s attitude? What can be improved?

I have been unemployed on and off for 4years now. Used to be an on air talent for Telemundo’s KVEA in Los Angeles, and ever since I was laid off from there, I just can’t get a break. I have done the “mean interview” with someone who has told me to lose weight to get a better tape (I have 20 versions).I also have friends that have told me to go into soaps! (i did a part with Days of Our Lives and Passions when NBC did buy the network and needed someone to “cross promote” the merger). What can I do when the coaching or me is about to give up???I live in Miami now…
When you are in between jobs, and the market is slow, you can sometimes feel as though things will not change. To get out of the doldrums, is very helpful to understand and apply some techniques to overcome the internal obstacles that keep you from doing and feeling your best.
Inner Critic This is the little voice in your head telling you not to try, never take a risk, always take the safe road, and to compromise your life by playing small. When you are looking for a job and feeling rejected, try using this 3-step process to chase away that inner critic. 1. Understand where the inner critic came from. Chances are it came from some negative feedback or information when you were growing up. As an adult, you have the power to overcome your inner critic. 2. Understand how your inner critic is useful or not. Most inner critic thoughts are not useful if they are holding you back. The only way those thoughts can be useful is if they keep you from getting complacent. 3. Act in spite of your inner critic. Even if you are having negative thoughts, don’t give into them. Keep yourself in an action orientation, recognize your strengths, and demonstrate those strengths with conviction when you are speaking with prospective employers.
Assumptions It is easy to make an assumption when you believe that because something happened in the past, it will happen again. Ask: “Why must it be that way?” You can overcome a negative assumption when you understand what happened, and apply that learning differently. So even though you haven’t received a job offer yet, don’t assume that you won’t get one in the future.
Have patience and practice optimism. When you work on overcoming internal obstacles, others will perceive you in a much more positive manner.
Do you think there will even be tv schedules, as we know them today, in five years? Or will everything be on demand and if so, what should I be learning now that will benefit me the most later?
We have a long way to go before “everything” will be on demand. The following research from the Leichtman Research Group reveals: DVR and VOD users have significantly increased over the past five years, yet over 90% of all TV viewing in the US is still of live TV. LRG forecasts that DVR and VOD’s share of total TV viewing time in the US will increase from less than 10% today to about 22% by the end of 2015. Besides the viewing issue programming contracts, packaging and advertising are all still quite problematic in the on-demand world.
