A CYNOPSIS MESSAGE FROM ION TELEVISION
This month, ION Television ranked #9 in A25-54, households & total viewers among cable entertainment networks.

ION Television. Positively Entertaining.

Sunday’s Super Bowl XLV on FOX ranks as the most-watched television program ever in the US with an average of 111 million total viewers. FOX also became the first network to ever go beyond 100 million total viewers for a night in primetime. This year’s Super Bowl tops the previous most-watched television program records in US history with the 2010 Super Bowl XLIV seen by 106.5 million total viewers and the series finale of M*A*S*H which held the record at 106 million total viewers from 1983 to 2010. Furthermore, FOX’s special Glee episode following the post-game averaged 26.8 million total viewers and 11.1 million among A18-49, making it the highest-rated scripted episode on television in three years with the A18-49 demo. Nielsen also reported Super Bowl XLV was viewed in 53.3 million households and delivered a preliminary 46.0 US HH rating.
Canada’s Global aired the special post-Super Bowl episode of Glee attracting nearly 2.2 million viewers.
The CW set Smallville’s series finale date for May 13, airing a two-hour concluding episode thus ending the series’ 10-year run. A week later, Supernatural will air its season finale on May 20 with two stacked episodes.
FOX’s upcoming reality competition series The X Factor from Simon Cowell estimates it is offering the largest prize in television history: a $5 million record deal with Syco, a joint venture between Cowell and Sony Music. FOX will launch The X Factor this fall and promoted the show during Sunday’s Super Bowl. Cowell will have on-air duties though other judges have not been announced. FOX said contestant auditions commence March 27 in Los Angeles with other stops in Chicago, Dallas, Miami, Seattle and New York.
Regis Philbin, host of syndicated daytime talk show Live with Regis and Kelly is continuing with his retirement plans though will leave the show now at the end of November instead of August. This extension will give ABC more time to celebrate Philbin and his 29 years as host.
GSN is rolling out the seventh season premiere of High Stakes Poker on February 26 at 8p and 11p. The series, presented by PokerStars tapped comedian and poker player Norm Macdonald to host the new season and in addition, will also sport a new 3D view of the action which will be available exclusively via DIRECTV’s 3D channel, n3D powered by Panasonic. High Stakes Poker is set at the Bellagio Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas where poker champs and amateurs compete in the high-stakes contest. Kara Scott also serves as co-host for the series, airing on Saturdays at 8p and 11p.
Early in March, Food Network launches two new series:
- Ice Brigade follows former chef Randy Finch and his crew of ice artists as they create original and unique ice sculptures. Series premieres March 3 at 10p.
- Chopped All-Stars watches as 16 well-known chefs take part in a five-step competition as they individually strive to win the $50,000 prize for their chosen charity as well as the title. Judges include Alex Guarnaschelli, Marcus Samuelsson, Marc Murphy and Chris Santos. Series premieres March 6 at 9p.
The Style Network brings back a fourth season of Ruby beginning March 6 at 8p. The new season witnesses Ruby Gettinger, who previously lost a tremendous amount of weight, as she struggles with new emotional reasons behind her addiction to food and the realization she has gained some weight. Prior to the fourth season premiere on March 6, Style Network will air a one-hour clip special, Ruby: My Naked Truth at 7p. Gay Rosenthal Productions is behind the series.
FX has ordered up a third season (13 episodes) of its comedy series The League, produced by FX Productions. In its first run, the second season of The League averaged 1.1 million A18-49, up 5% over the original season.
Lifetime Television ordered two scripted procedural drama series readying both to premiere this year with 13 episodes each:
- Against the Wall centers on Chicago police detective Abby Kowalski (Rachael Carpani) who causes a rift in her family of blue-collar cops when she joins the department’s Internal Affairs unit. The series has cast Treat Williams and Kathy Baker as Abby’s parents. Universal Cable Productions is producing.
- Exit 19 is about divorced mother Gloria Sheppard (Ally Walker) who tries to balance her demanding career as a LAPD homicide detective while raising two sons with the help from her troubled younger brother Davey (Chris Payne Gilbert).
- Lifetime will also return its other scripted series Army Wives for a fifth season in March and Drop Dead Diva for a third season later this summer.
NBC has two new pilots on the docket and is revisiting another drama project:
- The Crossing is a western project about a mysterious soldier who arrives in a small town and becomes a savior-like persona. The soldier also experiences haunting flashbacks to the Civil War. From writer Josh Brand and Peter Horton, who first developed the project at FX and now brings it to NBC where they will serve as executive producers; Universal Media Studios produces.
- NBC also picked up a comedy project from Kari Lizer, the creator/executive producer of The New Adventures of Old Christine. The comedy is about a woman who helps others going through career transitions and downsizing. Lizer wrote the project and will executive produce; Warner Bros. Television produces.
- NBC also is eyeing again the UK detective drama Prime Suspect, adapting a new version for US audiences. The project has a new creative team on board with Peter Berg tapped to be executive producer and director. Alexandra Cunningham and Sarah Aubrey will also serve as executive producers.
MTV opted to not pursue the reality show featuring The Hills’ Lauren Conrad citing lack of audience interest. The pilot episode featuring Conrad had been shot.

Answer to Yesterday’s Trivia Question: This broadcast network show revolved around a cowboy with amnesia struggling to find his identity. What was it? LAZARUS MAN on UPN (1996) Kudos to: Jim Gray-Froglight Prods/Missoula; Greg Moloznik-GLM Media Dynamics/Scottsdale; Kathleen Campbell-Dearly Departed Tours/Hollywood; And a special kudos to those who answered A Man Called Shenandoah (1965), another correct answer, just not the one I planned on!
Today’s Trivia Question: This vehicle has been around since the 1930s (not the original, but a version of the original), as an advertising machine. It used to have a little person driving the vehicle who wore a chef’s hat, appearing in local parades, supermarket openings, etc. What was this vehicle? (Email [email protected] with your answer and be sure to include your name, company, city and time zone.
