Good morning. It’s Tuesday, February 7, 2012, and this is your weekly issue of Cynopsis: Classified Advantage!

Standing Out in a Crowd

With so many people looking for a job interview these days, how do you stand out from the crowd?  Easy, don’t ask for one.  Instead, ask for an informational interview, better yet, don’t call it that, just a cup of coffee and twenty minutes to ask someone’s expertise about a company and its industry.

When you meet someone at a social function, the worst thing you can do is ask for a job.  It will immediately put the person on edge and they will do everything they can to avoid you, and may even suggest to their friends to do the same.

They are not there to hire you, they are there to relax and have a good time.  Provide that for them by congratulating them on what a wonderful job they are doing for their company.

Show an interest in the company by saying something that only an insider or someone who has done research would know.  This will often peak the interest of the person you’re talking to.  Discussing business with someone who has very little knowledge of the business is always tiresome, however, discussing business with a person with some expertise can be a very engaging experience.  Be the latter.

When you have accomplished this, it is an easy segue to setting an appointment to discuss the company and the industry further.  But remember, never ask for a job, your interest is purely informational.

The trick to the informational interview, is to peak the interest of the person you’re talking to the extent that they want to assist you because they find you interesting, intelligent and productive.

To accomplish this takes a lot of research of the person you are talking to, the company, and the industry.  Ask questions that allows the person to brag a bit about what they have done.  Ask questions that someone outside the industry would not think to ask.  And ask questions that peak the person’s interest in you, by being well informed, well mannered and articulate.

This approach isn’t only for social occasions, but for any occasions, even those like job fairs.  Remember, you want to stand out, everyone at a job fair wants a job, but you want information.

In this economy, many professionals are hesitant to take risks and make big career moves… so why not work to get promoted in your own organization?
Listed are helpful tips to making that happen and to “bloom where you are planted”

  • Keep an open mind; don’t look at your role in the company as only what your position description says.
  • If an opportunity to do more presents itself, jump on it.  It could lead to more exposure and an expansion of your skill set, which eventually could lead to a promotion!
  • Get involved, with teams both in the work place and work related clubs.  The more people you know outside of your own department could lead to cross functional development.
  • Be proactive in making your boss and the department you work for, look good.   When you make your boss look good, that only reflects well upon you.  As a result, if your boss gets promoted, you could be next in line.
  • Help others within the organization. Mentor those who are more junior than you.  In addition to helping them further their careers within the organization, it makes you look good… and you never know where they will end up and be able to help you at some point in the future.
  • Be a team player, other members of your team will appreciate it and want to help you succeed.
  • Remember the ABC’s – Always be connecting with others.
  • Keep an attitude of “abundance”, look at things from a “win win” perspective  the better off the company is, the better off you are!
  • Avoid at all costs the “what’s in it for me” trap  people don’t like to work with those who are only out for themselves.
  • Above all  do your job, do it well and with passion and the rest tends to fall into place. (If it doesn’t, it might be time to use that network and find a new job!)

If I don’t have a large professional/personal network, how much lower are my chances of getting a good job?

I cannot stress enough, the importance of a professional/personal network. It does not have to be large, but it needs to be high quality. Your network is a group of people who you can trust and who you know will help you out when you need it. Your network is built on common interests (professional or personal) and made up of people that you would go out of your way to help or vice versa.

This quality network should be made up of people that you know well and would be happy to refer to others. Of course, its great to have a large network, but a large network means nothing if the quality of the relationships is not there.

Are signing bonuses always broached by the employer? Is there an acceptable way for someone who has been offered a job to bring up the possibility of a signing bonus? Is there a ratio of salary to signing bonus that is considered the industry norm?

Ahhhh, signing bonuses… gone are the days when signing bonuses were the norm. In a day when most companies are cutting back and “doing more with less” – a signing bonus is actually just that, a bonus. Usually a signing bonus would be broached by the employer, but I have seen many cases where the signing bonus is an add on – a negotiation tactic, most common when the salary being offered is not as high as the expectations of the potential employee would like. 

Employers will sometimes add on a small bonus to keep the new employee “whole”. Other negotiation tactics can come in the way of a relocation bonus, a promise of a six month review based on performance or extra vacation.

~ RECAP: THIS WEEK IN EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

 Half Yard Productions promoted Michele Kurtz to VP/Development and Jeff Strong was named to the newly-created role as Creative Director.  Jeff will report to Michele Kurtz while based at the company’s Bethesda headquarters.  Also for its New York office, Jordana Starr was appointed Executive Producer, reporting to Nicole Sorrenti, Executive Producer/VP of Programming. 

Regina “Genie” Thomas was elevated to VP/Original Programming at BET Networks.  In her new position, Genie will continue to head reality series and develop new unscripted content for BET and Centric. 

Former GSN executive Dennis Gillespie was hired by Outside Television as SVP/Distribution.  Dennis will head the network’s distribution and expand its reach through forging partnerships with multichannel providers and online companies. 

UK-based producer Wag TV added Shannon Malone as VP/Development to spearhead the company’s new office in Washington, D.C.  Shannon joins from National Geographic Channel where she was Director/Development and worked in production at NGC and at the Discovery Networks. 

Sandra Dewey received a promotion as EVP/Head of Business Affairs at Turner Entertainment Networks (TEN) and Cartoon Network Originals.  In her new role, Sandra will continue to oversee business affairs and production for TNT, TBS and TCM originals encompassing scripted and unscripted series, long-form limited series, movies, documentaries, specials and comedy festivals in addition to new media and advertiser-driven initiatives.  Sandra also manages business affairs for truTV and Cartoon Network Originals.  Based in Los Angeles, Sandra reports to Steve Koonin, President, Turner Entertainment Networks and to Stuart Snyder, President/COO, Turner Broadcasting’s Animation, Young Adults & Kids Media group (AYAKM).

Independent distributor DRG has enlarged its rights management practice and in so doing has appointed Charlotte H, , a, rgreaves as SVP/Marketing and Business Development.  Charlotte will head new busines,, s and into digital arenas as well as assisting brand development growth through acquisitions, exploiting brands across vi, , deo and social gaming, live events, music and licensing and merchandising.  She will report to Jonathan Jackson, COO.

Former ABC News Senior Producer Dan Arnall joins Bloomberg as Executive Producer/News for Bloomberg Television.  Based in New York, Dan will manage Bloomberg’s television newsgathering and editorial in the US.  He will also be involved to integrate video content via Bloomberg’s multimedia properties including Bloomberg.com and Bloomberg Mobile.

Outdoor Channel named Christy Benson as Director/Affiliate Marketing, effective immediately.  Additionally, Russell Cooper was added at the network as Director/Affiliate Sales and Marketing for the Central Region.  Christy remains based in Temecula, CA, reporting to Randy Brown, EVP/Affiliate Sales and Marketing.  Russell will be based in Fort Mill, SC and reports to Daniel Soane, VP/Central Division and Emerging Media.

Independent digital agency, AKQA has expanded its reach into more international markets and has opened a new office in Paris.  This marks the company’s eighth office in various parts of the world.  At launch, AKQA opens the new Paris office with its client Nike and heading the creative team are: Peter Lund, Creative Director; Nicolai Smith, Associate Creative Director; and Julien Veillon, Associate Creative DirectorGuy Wieynk, serving as AKQA’s European Managing Director, will head management of the new Paris office.

Betsy Rella was tapped as VP/Ad Sales Research for The Weather Channel Companies (TWCC) based in New York.  Betsy will spearhead all ad sales research activities and will manage the cable and digital ad sales research team.  She reports to Indira Venkat, SVP/Strategic Research and Consumer Insights, TWCC.

Effective immediately, Entravision Communications Corporation upped Donald Daboub to Station Manager for the company’s television, radio and interactive media assets in the Denver, Colorado Springs and Aspen markets.  Previously, Donald was the GSM for these markets and has been with the company since 2006.

Production entity Prometheus Entertainment promoted Scott Hartford to CCO and Kim Sheerin to COO.  Scott will manage all facets of development, working closely with President/CEO, Kevin J. Burns to create new reality and non-fiction programming for cable networks.  Kim will now head all daily operations and deal with operational efficiency and fiscal oversight across the company.  Both Scott and Kim report directly to Kevin Burns. 

Original Productions elevated Jeff Conroy to the newly-created role as EVP/Programming and Sarah Whalen to VP/Programming.  Prior to these advancements, Jeff was VP/Programming while Sarah was Co-Executive Producer/Series Producer of Ax Men.

Effective immediately, NBC News appointed Jeff Rossen as National Investigative Correspondent for Today.  Jeff will spearhead Today’s newly-formed investigative unit, Rossen Reports where he and a team of producers will file special investigative stories for Today in addition to NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams and Dateline.

Melanie Wickham joins Absolute Post New York as Executive Producer to head all production logistics and daily operations of the company.  Melanie will report to CEO David Smith. 

Michael Breedlove takes on the new position as Director/Digital Media Development with The Inspiration Networks

Former MSNBC Senior Director/Brand Marketing Adam Deutsch is now with ESPN as Senior Director/Product Development for Global X Games Digital.  Adam will oversee produce development and management across all platforms including online, apps, mobile and tablet as the company expands the X Games brand worldwide.

Leftfield Pictures added Ed Simpson to become the company’s first Head/Business Development.  Ed will be in charge of all corporate development and branded entertainment deals for the company encompassing partnerships and licensing and merchandising among other duties.

National Geographic Channels International elevated Germaine Deagan Sweet to SVP/Global Content Sales.  Germaine will now manage the restructured Global Content Sales team which has expanded its worldwide coverage with team members and local resources in NGC offices located in London, Paris, Madrid, Warsaw, Washington, D.C., Rome, Moscow and Tokyo.  Germaine is based in London and will report to James Bond, CFO, National Geographic Channels Worldwide. 

Bob Reid, EVP/GM of The Africa Channel is retiring from the network as of March 1.  Bob has been with the network for seven years and was part of the original team that launched The African Channel in 2005.  Bob headed the network’s programming, production, marketing and affiliate sales as well as strategic planning.  Following his departure from the network, Bob will move to Accra, Ghana to establish an independent production company that will offer content to The Africa Channel.  He will further manage production operations for the network’s existing Kampala, Uganda bureau and will open the Accra bureau by late March. 

Former SVP/Editorial with CNN/US Nancy Lane was appointed Executive Producer of CBSNews.com.  Nancy will head, all editorial for CBS News’ digital assets, social media and mobile apps.  Nancy takes over her new position immediately.

Effective immediately, Asia TV USA tapped Timothy Boell as Group Head/Distribution.  Based in New York, Timothy will manage all distribution activities for Veria Living and Zee TV  Americas while reporting to CEO Suresh Bala Iyer.

Nonfiction and reality production company, Left/Right hired two new executives and promoted a third executive.  Nina L. Diaz will join as SVP/Current Production where she will be involved in both development and ongoing series production.  Anneka Jones was elevated to SVP/Development and she will continue to spearhead and manage the company’s expanding development team in addition to heading the company’s ongoing staffing and recruiting efforts.  Angie Day was added as VP/Development and Current Production.

Twentieth Television, Inc. named Lisa Kridos as Executive Producer of The Ricki Lake Show, the new syndicated talk show hosted and executive produced by Ricki Lake.  Currently, the show is sold in 93% of the US and will premiere in September.  Prior to this appointment, Lisa has been the Executive Producer of KTTV-FOX’s Good Day LA, the top-rated morning show in Los Angeles.

Paul FitzPatrick, President/COO of RLTV was named CEO of the network as of January 1, 2012.  Paul succeeded Founder John Erickson who will continue as Executive Chairman. 

Fisher Interactive Network (FIN) hired Ryan Moore as its new Director/Digital Sales.  Ryan will concentrate on managing and increasing revenues and leading the digital marketing team and expand the company’s multiplatform marketing activities.
