Good morning. It’s Tuesday, February 6, 2007 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.

Comcast and Common Sense Media, a non-partisan group, have entered into a multi-year deal to provide multiple platform media education tools for parents.  Under the partnership Comcast will make movie and TV program reviews from Common Sense Media available on its On Demand service and broadband portal Comcast.net, beginning later this year.  The new content will add to Comcast existing parental controls.

It isn’t clear just yet how soon you’ll be able to download Beatles songs from iTunes, but Apple Inc. and The Beatles’ company Apple Corps Ltd. have reached an agreement concerning the most recent trademark lawsuit brought about by Apple Corps against Apple Inc., and the use of the name “Apple” and apple logos.  The new agreement supplants the 1991 pact between the two companies.  Under this new deal, Apple Inc. will own all of the trademarks related to “Apple” and will license certain of those trademarks back to Apple Corps for their continued use. In addition, Apple Inc. will continue using its name and logos on iTunes.  And it will come as no surprise that the terms of deal were not disclosed.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Hold onto your adventurer’s hat and any ancient amulets you might have, because Paramount will be sending Indiana Jones 4 our way on May 22, 2008, per a Box Office Mojo report.

Robert Zemeckis, Jack Rapke and Steve Starkey have inked a deal with Disney to establish a new motion capture movie company.  The company will create films using the motion capture technology, all of which will be produced by Zemeckis, Rapke and Starkey with Zemeckis expected to direct several of the projects.  Disney will distribute and market the movie worldwide.  No development slate was announced.  The group of producers used motion capture technology in the movie adaptation of Polar Express and Monster House, and Zemeckis is currently using motion capture in the film version of Beowulf, which he is directing.

The N begins production this week in Makaha, Hawaii on 14 new half-hour episodes of Beyond the Break.  The new episodes of the live-action teen-targeted drama are slated to bow in early 2008.  The series is a co-production from MarVista Entertainment, Brookwell McNamara Entertainment and The N.  MarVista and BME will both serve as producers for the half-hour series with MarVista handling the worldwide distribution.

Casting news:

  • Joining the cast of The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, Disney’s adaptation of the second book in author C.S. Lewis’ series, will include: Ben Barnes as Prince Caspian, Alicia Borrachero as Prunaprismia, Peter Dinklage as Trumpkin the Dwarf and Vincent Grass in the role of Doctor Cornelius.  These actors join a returning cast including Georgie Henley, Skandar Keynes, William Moseley, and Anna Popplewell and lending his voice to Aslan, Liam Neeson.
  • Jeff Bridges joins the cast of Iron Man, says the Hollywood Reporter.  The cast for the live-action movie adaptation of Iron Man already includes Gweneth Paltrow, Robert Downey Jr. and Terrance Howard.  Bridges will play Tony Stark’s loyal confidant and employee. The movie will be directed by Jon Favreau, produced by Marvel Entertainment and distributed by Paramount.  The current release date for the movie is May 2, 2008.

MORE KIDS STUFF

A new special episode of the preschool animated series Charlie and Lola will debut during Disney Channel’s Playhouse Disney block on Monday, February 26, at 10a.  The episode focuses on Charlie and Lola as they learn to cope after the loss of their pet mouse.  He network will run a parental guideline ahead of the episode to inform parents and caretakers about the content of the episode.

PBS Kids Sprout will launch Sprout Diner’s March Menu, a month-long event designed to encourage healthy eating habits in preschoolers, beginning March 1, 2007, coinciding with National Nutrition Month.  The event will include new episodes of Sprout Diner animated series (debuting March 16) and live-action cooking segments featuring parents and preschoolers making healthy recipes from the Sprout Diner menu.  Beginning March 16, the cooking segments will move exclusively to Sprout VOD.  Nutrition related games and downloadable recipes are available at SproutOnline.com.  Additionally, the winning recipe from a Sprout nationwide contest will be show on-air n March 15.

TV-Loonland has inked a range of broadcast and home entertainment sales for its series Little Princess (65×11′).  Season II of the animated preschool is currently in production:

  • Anchor Bay Entertainment has picked up seasons I and II of the Little Princess.  Anchor Bay plans to release the series on DVD in the UK and in both French and English speaking Canada.  Slated for to be available in spring 2007 in the UK, the launch will be supported through the release of 10 TV tie-in titles by Andersen Press as well as additional on-air promotions.
  • Australia’s Madman Entertainment has acquired the video and DVD distribution rights for the Little Princess.
  • Both MBC Middle East and Singapore’s TV12 have inked rights deals for season I and II.
  • Picking up season I of Little Princess are TVP (Poland), Minimax (Hungary, Czech Rep, Slovakia, Romania), RTV Slovenia and RTP (Portugal).
  • Networks set to acquire seasons II are S4C (Wales), A-list Scandinavian broadcasters and UBC (Thailand), which all previously picked up season I.
  • The series will bow on Ki.Ka (Germany) on April 13, 2007.

The companion website to the animated preschool series Ellen’s Acres has launched ( www.ellensacres.com ). Created by Larry Schwarz, CEO, Animation Collective, which produces the series, the website features games and activities, including Dress Up, Paint with Ellen and Sort with Ellen, as well as printable scenes from the show, character and episode descriptions, wallpapers among other features. Ellen’s Acres revolves around 5-year-old Ellen, her feather duster, imagination and sense of humor all of which she uses on her adventures that take place at the hotel owned by her parents.  The series bowed last month on Cartoon Network US and also airs on its UK channel.

MARKETING/LICENSING

A whopping 14 license deals for Wow! Wow! Wubbzy, the Nick Jr. animated preschool series from Bolder Media and Starz Media.  The series launched on Nick Jr. in August 2006 and airs weekdays at 1:30p.  New licensees include: Starz Home Entertainment (DVD/Video); Fisher Price (master toy license/full line of toys); Hasbro (games and puzzles); Scholastic (Publishing/school and retail); Simon & Schuster (color/activity books); Meredith (sound storybooks); Children’s Apparel Network (apparel); SG Footwear (footwear); Dream Apparel (sleepwear); Berkshire (headwear/accessories); Unique (party goods); Bakery Crafts (wholesale cake decorations); A.E. Nathan (over-the-counter fabric); CTI Industries (Mylar Balloons)

Cartoon Network Enterprises, Cartoon Network’s merchandizing and licensing division, has inked an exclusive, long-term partnership with Hallmark Cards Inc.  Under the deal Hallmark will create a range of products in the social expression category, which includes stationery and party supplies, for the US and Canada, all based on the network’s properties targeted to K6-11.  Hallmark will launch products featuring Cartoon Network’s shows and characters beginning summer 2007.

The Andale Posse Tour, a six-week multi-city skateboarding tour, will kick-off off February 10, 2007, with its sponsor Warner Bros.’ Speedy Gonzales.  Featuring professional skateboarders Steve Caballero, Danny Gonzalez and Patrick Melcher, aka the Andale Posse, will make weekend stops at skate parks in 12 cities, where they will take part in an exhibition along with local pros in each city.  The group will travel from location to location in a Speedy-customized vehicle, recording the events and their travels for release on DVD.  Additionally, a limited-edition line of Speedy skateboards, from Powell skateboards, T-shirts and hats will be available at tour stops and Vans will release a limited-edition Speedy print available on their website and will also provide special codes to tour attendees that will allow them to access the print and customize their own Vans online.  Kraft will supply the tour with Easy Mac.  Tour information can be found at www.andaleposse.com .

United Media and Bruce Barry’s Wacky World Studios have teamed to launch a joint venture to represent the North American licensing rights for Bug Rangers, a CGI animated series for K4-7.  Created by Wacky World Studios, Bug Rangers (f/k/a The Roach Approach) aims to teach kids about basic values and morals through the stories of three bug buddies.  Fox Home Entertainment distributes Bug Rangers DVDs in North America and videos air worldwide on the cable/satellite networks, Day Star Television and Smile Network. The fifth Bug Rangers DVD titled Submarine Sandwich will be released spring 2007.  United Media will continue to work with the property’s existing licensing partners: Word Distribution (music); Zonderkidz (publishing); and Dayspring (gift/stationery).

Warner Bros. Consumer Products (WBCP) has expanded again, this time setting up a DC Superheroes store in Jakarta Indonesia.  The boutique is the result of collaboration with PT. Daliny Guna Usaha, a private partnership serving as an authorized retailer.  Several other locations will open in the region this month.  PT. Daliny Guna Usaha is also teaming with Bank Central Asia Tbk, which has been licensed by WBCP to issue the BCA Visa Credit Card featuring Batman and Looney Tunes.  Under the deal, all card members of BCA lifestyle credit cards featuring Batman and Looney Tunes will receive a 20% discount off all merchandise until July 31, 2007.  Umm, do I hear road trip?  Sure it is a long flight, but think of the miles.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Cookie Jar Entertainment has appointed Josette Bonte as VP/Digital Media.  In this newly created position, Bone will work out of the company’s LA office and report to Ken Locker, SVP/Digital Media.  Bonte most recently served as VP/Content & IPTV, Ovum.  Previously, she was SVP/Business Development, Media Station, Inc., which owned in part by Phillips Electronics.

Madeleine Lévesque has been named to new position of EVP/Content Development, 9 Story Entertainment.  She will identify and acquire new properties for the company and head the development effort, beginning with the company’s current 2D digital animated properties, Almost Naked Animals, Bash Boys and SuperEwe.  Lévesque will report to Vince Commisso, President and CEO.  She joins 9 Story from Teletoon Canada Inc., where most recently she served as Director/Original productions.

Jodi Brenner has been upped to SVP/Business and Legal Affairs at NBC Universal Television Networks Distribution, where she reports to Rick Cotton, EVP/General Counsel, NBC Universal and Bridget Baker, President, NBC Universal Television Networks Distribution. She will supervise the business and legal affairs of NBCU’s linear programming in addition to the retransmission of NBC and Telemundo stations with cable and satellite operators, as well as telcos, broadband, wireless and alternative media distributors.
