Cynopsis: DIGITAL

02/02/10

Good morning, it’s Tuesday, February 2, 2010, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

Amazon posted an announcement saying it will relent to Macmillian‘s wish to shift to a new e-book pricing scheme that would peg most of the publisher’s bestsellers at $12.99 to $14.99. “We will have to capitulate and accept Macmillan’s terms because Macmillan has a monopoly over their own titles, and we will want to offer them to you even at prices we believe are needlessly high for e-books,” writes the Amazon Kindle team. Meanwhile the upcoming launch of the iPad looks to be setting up Apple and Amazon in an e-book format war as e-books purchased on one platform may not be compatible on the other, per the AP. Apple’s planned iBooks store will be the third major platform for e-books, after Amazon’s proprietary system and Adobe’s free e-book platform used by Sony’s Reader editions and Barnes & Nobles’ new Nook device.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

The Associated Press has signed a new licensing deal with Yahoo that will insure the continued flow of AP content on the popular portal and its related sites, per an AP report. No financial details were disclosed. The AP continues to negotiate with Google, which stopped posting new AP stories from late last year.

Univision Interactive Media‘s Spanish language YouTube Channel is up and running with a selection of both short and long form programming – the first outlet that has featured Univision, TeleFutura and Galavision shows in the U.S. outside of Univision.com. The content will be accompanied by all three of YouTube’s main advertising formats: pre-roll, overlay, and display with Kraft signing on as exclusive launch partner.

NBA Digital will utilize NBA TV, online and mobile platforms to drum up interest in this year’s All Star weekend, beginning Fri. Feb. 12 with 12 hours of live streaming coverage. Check out the 99 cent NBA.com All-Star Slam Dunk Live app for the Iphone/iPod Touch or Android; it features 4 live camera feeds covering the dunking contest on Saturday night.

Following Tatyana Ali’s “Buppies,” BET.com premiers its next scripted web series “Shop Talk: What’s On The Hearts Of Men,” today at 3:00 pm ET. It’s a free-flowing discussion show set, where else, in a barbershop. Malik Yoba (Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married Too) writes, directs, produces and stars.

Following its acquisition of Jupitermedia’s online images division in ’08, Getty Images re-introduced Jupiter’s ThinkStock subscription service. For $249/month or $2,499/year, online publishers can download up to 25 images/day from a searchable archive that includes professional and user-generated photos from Getty Images, iStockphoto and Jupiterimages.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

Netflix continues to increase its Watch Instantly streaming catalog, signing new deals with indie distributors The Criterion Collection, Gravitas Ventures, Kino Lorber, Music Box Films, Oscilloscope Laboratories and Regent Releasing, per THR.

Online auction-based ad data exchange BlueKai has closed a $21 million C round of financing led by GGV Capital (formerly Granite Global Ventures) with additional investments from existing investors Redpoint Ventures and Battery Ventures.  The company had previously raised a total of $13.7 million from Redpoint and Battery.  As part of the round, BlueKai also added Jeff Richards, Partner at GGV Capital, to its Board of Directors.

The 25th Film Independent Spirit Awards has a new distribution partner in Babelgum, a site that has made indie film a niche since its launch. The company will present a curated selection of clips and red-carpet footage on Babelgum.com and through its free iPhone and Android apps.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

Brand.net introduced a new video ad solution that leverages VAST 2.0, the IAB’s newly released online video pre-roll advertising standard, to extend the company’s branding capabilities across its video ad network. The system guarantees reach, audience composition and “quality of impression” by weeding out in-banner or display bundling and below-the-fold autoplay streams. Unilever’s I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter! has signed on to test the solution.

IAB
Chairman Randall Rotherberg warns that Apple’s proprietary distribution system being set up for the iPad, along with other walled garden devices, will lead to the splintering and semi-privatization of the internet that will slow the development of online ad standards.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

Italian broadcaster Mediaset is on the verge of striking a settlement with YouTube in a case involving videos posted showing the bullying of an autistic boy, reports THR – citing Italian reports. The deal would involve other Italian content providers, with each taking a percentage of the ad revenue YouTube derived from sites connected with their content. During the trial, the Italian government has proposed a law making online video services like YouTube liable for invasions of privacy, violations of copyright and other violations caused by UGC.

Seattle-based white label online video company thePlatform, acquired by Comcast back in ’06, is celebrating its 10-year anniversary by launching a brand new visual video management system that removes much of the heavy lifting and makes the whole process of syndicating video to multiple platforms fairly intuitive. thePlatform’s “mxp beta” system builds publishing profiles and standardized APIs that prepare video for specific outlets including a new 640×480 pixel publishing profile for Apple’s iPad. The company’s new corresponding developer’s kit also enables advanced customization features such as the ability to set advertising parameters. Mxp is built upon a brand new architecture that combines servers with cloud-based management designed to scale for large events, says thePlatform VP/Mkt. Marty Roberts.

Print and web publisher and TV Broadcaster Gannett engineered a comeback of sorts reporting a Q4 profit of $133.6 million, or 56 cents per share, compared with a staggering loss of $4.7 billion, or $20.65 per share, during Q4 2008.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

One hope the music industry has of pulling out of its decade long tailspin is the development of a new digital format that brings the kind of interactivity the whole mash-up scene thrives on to the table. One that’s been around for a while now is Paris-based MXP4, a solution that allows fans to play with remixes of their songs (REMIX IT), sing along to the tracks Karaoke style (SING IT), strip down the song to isolate different instruments (MIX IT) or listen to new digital Maxi Singles (MAX IT.) The idea is to improve engagement by giving listeners a reason to expend more energy around the songs. With the addition of digital music veteran Albin Serviant (founder of Microsoft-purchased MusiWave) last year, the company is slowly but surely getting big name artists to play around with the format. Check out some tracks done up the MXP4 way from Michael Jackson, Pink, Britney Spears, the Pet Shop Boys and some 70 other (mostly European) acts. The tracks will play on the web-based MXP4 player or check out Warner Music France artist Sliimy’s free playful iPhone app that utilizes the format to allow users to remix and sing along with his tracks.
