Good morning. It’s Tuesday, February 21, 2012, and this is your weekly issue of Cynopsis: Classified Advantage!
Finding the Unpublished Job Opportunities
There are two job markets, published and unpublished. The highest paying jobs are mostly filled through unpublished means. So how can you find out about the unpublished opportunities?
Send your resume to as many companies as possible. This is a lot of work because each one must be tailored for that specific company. Always use the same industry key words in your resume as the company uses in the job openings they do publish. Many companies look first to their internal data base for new employees. You want to be in that data base.
Send your resume and cover letter to recruiters. Lots of them. It’s a numbers game with recruiters, don’t expect to hear back from many, but hopefully some will respond.
Try to get your resume in before others by seeking and responding to clues that a company is about to expand its work force. You can read further about this strategy in last weeks Cynopsis Classified Advantage article, Finding Jobs Before they are Posted.
Send your resume to executives of companies. This is a risky strategy because it can backfire by annoying the exact people you want to ingratiate, so weigh the risks before doing so.
Finally, as you have read here many times before, network like crazy. You never know who your neighbor went to college with, you never know all the people your friends are friends with. Each and everyone you know is a possible lead to a new job. Let them know you are looking, generally, friends want to help friends.
This is a numbers game and admittedly, the numbers are not in your favor. But when you are unemployed, you need to try everything you can. Always remember when sending out all those resumes and note and any other documents that you think may help, it only takes one.

“None of us ever know where we are in our own “life story”; the challenge of today may lead to the glory of tomorrow… life pushes us around in unexpected ways; one path disappears just as another reveals itself.” These words, written by Fiasco Theater directors about Shakespeare’s Cymbeline, give us a good way of looking at our evolving careers.
We can plan all we like, but we must always be open to paths we had not anticipated. The recognition of these paths is often most productive: they force us to see how to apply our experience and skills in ways we are not used to, fresh ways. Yes, I do believe that there is much of value to be found outside the periphery of our own comfort zone.
But before you head out of the box to push the envelope with some blue sky thinking to discover the next stage of your own life story, I suggest you get prepared for what may pop up by answering a few questions: like these.
When you are referred to someone professionally, what do you think is said about you when your name is brought up?
When you went in to that last interview, how much did you know about the person you were meeting and what they were looking for?
When you are asked what you do, what do you say? How long does that take?
When you work with a client, or meet a recruitment director, how much are you thinking, “I have to sell what I have” and how much are you thinking, “What does she need that I can bring her?”
When you send out your resume, do you believe in it?
How up to date are you records on all the people you’ve worked with or worked for, or otherwise come across professionally. You never know who might someday be the connector to the job you want.
Are you aware of what competitors in your field are doing, and are you thinking about how you could help them do it better?
Do you enjoy finding out what other people do and who they work for?
Do you ever think how the skills you have could be applied to another industry or niche?
Are you able to express why you are unique how the story of your skills and experience is unlike anyone else’s?
OK that is quite enough to be going on with.

What is the best way to say no when asked to write a reference?
I suggest doing it simply, clearly and politely.
How is this: “I thank you for considering me, but I don’t feel that I am able to give you the kind of reference you need, so I would prefer to pass. I wish you all the best.”
That sounds enough like a No to me.
Is there any situation when it is a good idea to contact the head of HR rather than going through “the process”?
Each company and each set of individuals have their own protocols and their own levels of insecurity and their own particular ability to make a decision. On the whole if a process has been established then it should be followed, and usually HR departments are pretty process-conscious. They could say to themselves, this candidate does not play by the rules and we set the rules so I guess we should rule him out.
If you want to make an outside run with the attached risk of alienating your HR contact (who is likely to be able to veto you), I suggest you go for the hiring manager rather than the HR boss. If you have tried everything else and see no alternative and feel you have nothing to lose by trying the HR head, then go for it, but you are probably wasting your effort at that point.

DISH Media Sales elevated Adam Gaynor to Director/Advertising Sales. In his new role, Adam will head all national general market ad sales activity in addition to managing the DISH general market sales teams located in New York, Chicago and Los Angeles. Meredith has established a new Video Assets Creation Unit within its National Media Group. J.R. McCabe, VP/Chief Video Officer, National Media Group will head the new Video Assets Creation Unit, reporting to Doug Olson, EVP/Director of Business Operations and Development. This new unit will focus on creating original video content for Meredith’s major brands across digital platforms such as websites, tablet devices and mobile and it will utilize state-of-the art video production facilities at Meredith’s New York offices, as well as expanded facilities at the company’s Des Moines headquarters. As a result of these changes, the Meredith Video Network, headed by Michael Knott, VP/Executive Producer will move to the Meredith Women’s Network, reporting to Andy Wilson, SVP/Audience Development and Commerce. CBS Entertainment elevated Angelica McDaniel to SVP/Daytime where she will supervise the network’s daytime lineup including the soaps The Young and the Restless and Bold and the Beautiful, game shows The Price Is Right and Let’s Make A Deal and the talk show The Talk. Noreen Halpern, President/Dramatic Programming for Entertainment One Television (eOne) is departing the company after serving in her position for three years. During her time at eOne, Noreen headed all scripted series and long-form projects including the programs Hell on Wheels for AMC; ABC’s Rookie Blue; Haven on Syfy; HBO’s Hung; and NBC’s The Firm. Noreen is exiting eOne amicably and she will continue with the company for awhile to assist with the transition period.
Chad Bennett, previously serving as Head/Brand Development at Reveille has established Populus Brands, a brand-building company designed to spur franchise growth, new revenue and consumer engagement for clients. Eileen O’Neill, presently Group President for Discovery Channel and TLC under Discovery Communications will be honored with the 2012 Leadership Award from CINE, the film, television and digital media non-profit organization. Eileen will receive her award May 9, 2012, at La Maison Française at the Embassy of France in Washington, D.C.
Effective immediately, the US and UK-based independent television production and distribution group, DCD Media plc named Sammy Nourmand as CEO and also promoted David Green to Executive Chairman. Furthermore, John Cusins was appointed Non-Executive Director and Tarik Wildman will continue in the role as Non-Executive Director.
