Nancy A. Carr, most recently SVP/Corporate Communications for the Hallmark Channels, died last Friday after a long illness.  Before joining Hallmark Channels, Ms. Carr was VP/Communications at the CBS Television Network from 1999 to 2004 where she supervised publicity for series, movies, miniseries and specials such as the Grammy Awards, the Primetime Emmy Awards and the Tony Awards.  Ms. Carr was active in numerous industry organizations including serving as governor in the Public Relations Peer Group and as a member of the Diversity Committee for the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.  In her personal life, Ms. Carr also dedicated much time and energy to animal rights and animal rescue activities.  In lieu of flowers, Ms. Carr’s family is requesting contributions be made in her name to The Feral Cat Caretakers Coalition, P.O. Box 491244, Los Angeles, CA 90049-9244 and fixnation.org.  There will be no public service. In a statement last Friday, Hallmark Channel’s President/CEO, Bill Abbott said in part, “We are grateful to Nancy for guiding the company’s corporate media strategy for more than five years. On the personal side, those of us who cared deeply for and about Nancy will never forget her dedication to life’s smallest creatures, as she worked tirelessly for animal rights and animal rescue.”

Clarification: Last Friday’s story about the return of sci-fi series Firefly to basic cable on Science Channel mentioned the series had not aired on a basic cable channel since 2008 when USA Network ran the series.  Ovation network also aired the series on a limited run this last January.

ABC additionally is close to signing Ashley Judd to star in the new drama Missing from writer Greg Poirier and produced by ABC Studios.  ABC gave Missing a 10-episode order with production starting this summer in Europe for a planned fall or midseason premiere.  Missing is about a suburban mother who travels to Europe in search of her son after he disappears in Italy while studying abroad.  The mother is also an ex-CIA agent who will stop at nothing to find her son and bring him home alive.  Gina Matthews and Grant Scharbo are executive producing the drama with director Steve Schill.  Judd last appeared on television in the NBC series Sisters from 1991-1994.

ITV1 commissioned a six-episode one-hour series featuring the famous magic duo Penn & Teller.  DCD-owned September Films and US-based 1/17 Productions are producing the entertainment series, Penn & Teller: Fool Us slated to air on ITV1 in primetime later in 2011.  In each episode, aspiring magicians will perform their best tricks to try and fool the pair and if successful, the performer will appear on stage with Penn & Teller during their Las Vegas show. The six-part series was inspired by the success of a 90m special that aired on ITV1 in January which tallied 4.17 million total viewers.
