CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis

02/21/06

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, February 21, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Last week when Fox’s American Idol went head to head opposite NBC’s Olympics, it nearly tripled the Olympic share by posting a very huge 11.7/29 for its hour of primetime.  Tonight, no doubt looking to add a couple more notches to its February belt, American Idol will run a special two-hour episode, with just the 12 girls performing.  Tonight is also a primo event for the Olympics – the women’s figure skating short program with Sasha Cohen, Emily Hughes and Kimmie Meissner from the US, as well as freestyle skiing, bobsled and speed skating.  And if that’s not enough — tomorrow will be another 2-hour  American Idol special, this time with just the guys.  Scheduled to be shown on the Olympics tomorrow night are Women’s Alpine and freestyle skiing, Snowboarding, Speed Skating and Short Track.

*MORE GOOD STUFF*SIRIUS Satellite Radio and Court TV NewsSM have announced the launch of Court TV Morning Radio SM, a weekday call-in radio news program about crime, justice and the legal system. Court TV News’ Vinnie Politan, who will continue to co-anchor the network’s daily trial coverage program, Bloom & Politan, hosts. The new show is expected to debut on March 20 on Court TV Radio, SIRIUS Channel 110, running weekdays 6a – 9a.

If you haven’t heard because of the holiday weekend – former Pittsburgh Steeler and recent Super Bowl champion Jerome Bettis, aka The Bus, will join the guys at NBC for the Sunday night football games as an in-studio analyst.  And a happy coincidence for The Bus – his first game at NBC will be in Pittsburgh, the same night the Steelers are awarded their Super Bowl rings.

NBC‘s new drama series Conviction from Dick Wolf will be available on iTunes — two weeks before it’s debut in primetime. And no buck-ninety-nine for this one — it’s a free download, available starting right now.

And if you’re an iTunes TV downloader, you may also want to know that effective immediately ABC has bulked up its iTunes offerings with America’s Funniest Home Videos.  And, ESPN has begun making available via iTunes some of its Sportscenter ads, ads which some might say are the funniest and most clever promos on television. A half dozen are on iTunes as free downloadables.

Longtime sportscaster Curt Gowdy died at his home in Florida at the age of 86, after a long battle with leukemia. The long time voice of the Boston Red Sox, Gowdy also called the shots for the NFL, college basketball, the Olympics and more than a dozen baseball All-Star games. Gowdy called the first Super Bowl in 1967, and if you remember the infamous Heidi incident, he was in the booth that night in 1968 as well. Dick Ebersol, NBC Universal Sports chairman says Gowdy was “the greatest play-by-play person up to this point NBC ever had. …  He was a remarkable talent and he was an even more remarkable human being.”

* NEW ORDERS / CASTING / DEVELOPMENT / PRODUCTION *A new project for USA called Psych is about an amateur detective played by James Roday who convinces the police (or “cons” may be the more appropriate term) that he has psychic powers. With his unwilling sidekick played by Dule Hill, the non-psychic psychic works with police solving cases. The 60m show is scheduled to premiere with the a two hour launch episode on July 7, and run for 13 episodes.  According to Hollywood Reporter, Psych will air at 10p on Friday nights, and Monk will slide down to 9p to serve as Psych’s lead-in. Psych is from Tagline Pictures and NBC Universal Television.

I know you’ve been concerned about this, so let’s put those concerns to rest.  Ving Rhames will co-star in The CW‘s new drama series Aquaman, based on the DC Comic hero. No, he’s not Aquaman himself, but rather his mentor, McCaffery.  Aquaman, or A.C. Curry, will be played by Will Toale.  Also part of this Warner Bros. TV project is Denise Quinones as Rachel Starling, love interest for Curry.

And Fox has given the official go ahead to a comedy project called Julie Reno, Bounty Hunter, about a single mom who finds there’s money to be made in bounty hunting.  This project is from 20th Century Fox TV.

Casting Notes … listed them by network:

CBS:

  • Pilot project Unseparable from NBC Universal has added Rachel Boston to the cast.  This project was previously known as the untitled Port/Wiseman project. This project finds a young newlywed couple who move to her hometown, where her decidedly large family lives.
  • Play Nice about a brother and sister who inherit and run the family Toy company, has added Timm Sharp as the brother, and Sara Rue as the sister.

ABC:

  • Project Six Degrees about a group of people in NYC, has added Erika Christiansen.
  • October Road, about a successful young screenwriter who finds in his hometown some things never change, three new cast members have been added:  Geoff Stults, Brand William Henke and Evan Jones.

NBC:

  • Gina Gershon has joined the cast of the pilot project Lipstick Jungle about three very strong and powerful business women in New York City.

Fox:

  • Damages, a primetime soap pilot about a group of lawyers, has added Kristin Lehman who will star in the project opposite Cole Hauser.

 * RATINGS *Sunday – A18-49 Analysis:   ABC led Sunday night with an overall 7.4/17 A18-49, according to fast affiliate ratings from Nielsen Media Research. NBC was #2 with a 5.4/13, followed by CBS and Fox tied with a 2.6/6, Univision 2.2/5, and WB 1.2/3.  At 7p NBC led the pack with a 4.5/12, five share points higher than CBS’ 7-8p hour of 60 Minutes. At 8p NBC held its lead-in with a 5.9/13, but tied in share with ABC’s EM: Home Edition. For the 9-10p hour, ABC easily jogged ahead with a 9.8/21 for Desperate Housewives, nearly doubling the share of NBC’s Olympics. At 10p, ABC held it’s lead with a 10.8/24 for Grey’s Anatomy, doubling NBC’s Olympic share.

The History Channel
presents This Day in History:
1848: The Communist Manifesto, written by Karl Marx with the assistance of Friedrich Engels, is published in London by a group of German-born revolutionary socialists known as the Communist League.  The political pamphlet, arguably the most influential in history, proclaimed that “the history of all hitherto existing society is the history of class struggles” and that the inevitable victory of the proletariat, or working class, would put an end to class society forever.
