Want That Job? Then Find an Insider.

For every job you apply for, you should have a contact inside that company. This contact will hand deliver your resume to the hiring manager. This is the number one way to find a job. It’s been proven to be more successful with my clients than any other networking idea or concept.

If you apply for a job without a key contact, your chance of getting an interview (and job) goes down 95 percent. You just become another resume sitting in a pile with nothing helping you stand out.

When an “insider” delivers your resume, your credibility soars. And if that person puts in a good word about you, you’re almost guaranteed an interview.

Finding an internal advocate isn’t as daunting or impossible as it may first appear.

In fact, I’d estimate that 80 to 90 percent of my clients have been successful by using these six steps:

1. Identify the specific companies you want to work for.
Target the exact companies that fit the work you want to do. You might choose 4-5 companies in one industry. The more companies you select that fit your criteria, the more opportunities you will have.

2. Spread the word to your network.
Begin by telling everyone you know about the work you want to do and that you would appreciate their help. This includes your family, relatives, friends of parents, neighbors, former employees, alumni from your college and professional organization members.

3. Discover your invisible network.
Your network is larger than you think. Take at least ONE TO TWO FULL DAYS brainstorming to expand your network. Go through your high school or college yearbooks looking for familiar faces. Think about people who aren’t your friends, but your life touches theirs. People like barbers or hairdressers, bartenders, your trainer at the gym, the mailman, your insurance agent, your doctor or dentist. People who are in sales or service jobs typically have extensive networks. And since you’re a customer, they’ll be more likely to return the favor.

4. Network THEIR network.
Ask for people to give you contacts who just know a lot of people in and around your industry. You’ll be surprised how often this leads to a job opportunity.

5. Ask them to make an introduction.
Chances are one of these people knows someone inside the company you want to work for. Ask them to make an introduction to the person who is hiring in the positions you want.

6. Don’t let geography stand in your way.
When you find someone who works for a large organization with multiple offices and they don’t know anyone in the specific division you want to work for, don’t let that stop you from leveraging them as a key internal contact. They are still peers who work for the same company. They can contact the hiring manager and say, “I work in the Chicago office and I have a friend of mine in your city who I want you to consider for the position.” Even though your contact doesn’t know this person, it’s still a personal introduction that will get you the interview and then the job.

Once you’ve found the insider, make sure your cover letter is addressed to the hiring manager. This will be a small thing that will help you stand out from the other applicants who say “to whom it may concern.” In your cover letter mention the contact that made the introduction and state the areas that make you qualified for the position.

Everything you do is about making a personal connection. Whether it’s the person inside the company who delivers the resume, or the cover letter that is personalized, both will make it a customized first impression. While everyone else is staying general or generic, you are specific and personal. This will get you noticed.

I have an interview coming up and I always seem to fumble on the weakness/area of improvement question. Can you offer any advice as to what the interviewers are looking for?

This interview question is a quick way for the employer to assess whether you are a good candidate or not. You can get eliminated pretty quickly if you stumble or answer incorrectly.

I suggest bringing up an area of weakness that isn’t a glaring flaw. Then explain to the interviewer how you’ve ALREADY overcome it and what you specifically have done to turn this weakness into a strength.

For example, you might say that you had trouble speaking before groups, but you joined Toastmasters or took a training class and now you feel confident when giving presentations.

What is your opinion of resumes being longer than 1 page (2-3 pages)?

It’s a myth that you should restrict yourself to one page. In today’s competitive marketplace it’s essential to show all your expertise, experience and overall impact in prior jobs. Your experience and accomplishments will dictate the length of the resume.

Ideally, I recommend two pages. However, don’t just add fluff. If you have only enough information for one page that will be fine.

Effective immediately, TV Guide Digital elevated Emily Christner to VP/Marketing where she will manage marketing and research activities for TVGuide.com and TV Guide Mobile.  In her new role, Emily will report to Christy Tanner, EVP/GM. 

Brad Herman joins TidalTV as Chief Product/Media Officer, a newly-minted position that begins immediately.  Under his Chief Product Officer duties, Brad is charged with setting the product strategy agenda and managing the implementation of the strategy throughout the company.  As Chief Media Officer, Brad will supervise the supply side of the company’s operations encompassing inventory strategy and managing publisher relationships.  Based in Baltimore, Brad reports to Founder/CEO Scott Ferber.

Spotlight Cinema Networks added Tess Mallery as Director/Chicago Region in the company’s newly opened Chicago office. 

Jim Grillo appointed to the Boards of Brazilian cable properties Adelphia Comunicacoes, S.A. Comunicacoes and STV Comunicacoes, S.A. which are indirectly owned with a 25% stake by Denver-based Adelphia Communications Corporation and with a 75% stake by Brazil-based Blue Telecom Group.  Jim has served as the interim CEO for the cable entities since September 2008.  Jim is also presently the President of Cricket Group in Denver. 

Bigfoot Entertainment named Christian Meoli to VP/Marketing and Chris Hammond to Head/Acquisitions and Distribution at the company’s distribution and acquisition unit Bigfoot Ascendant. 

Kim Rosenblum promoted to EVP/Marketing and Creative, a newly-created position at TV Land.  In her new role, Kim will preside over off-channel marketing including consumer and trade advertising, media planning, consumer products, consumer promotions and ad sales marketing.  Kim will also continue as TV Land’s Creative Director and will supervise the network’s on-air and off-air creative and sponsor integrations.  Based in New York, Kim reports to Larry W. Jones, President, TV Land. 

Brant Pinvidic who has been the EVP/Development at 3 Ball Productions since 2009 is leaving his position to form his own company which will hold an exclusive production services agreement with 3 Ball.

Advertising agency Campfire hired Jason Sutterfield as Head/Production and Simone Oppenheimer as Director/Business Development.  In addition, Campfire elevated Marianne Raphael as Group Account Director.  Jason will manage the creation of the agency’s multi-platform campaigns encompassing video production, digital development, influencer outreach and social media efforts.  Simone actually is returning to Campfire after serving as a year as Director/Brand Development at Big Fuel Communications.  In her new role, Marianne will lead the agency’s client relationships and specific accounts including HBO, Discovery, Harley-Davidson and Snapple.

Lisa Barroso advanced to VP/Distribution for Hallmark Channels, comprised of Hallmark Channel and Hallmark Movie Channel.  Lisa will spearhead all facets of distribution and affiliate sales in addition to developing and executing affiliate sales strategies aimed at increasing distribution and subscriber revenues.  Lisa will remain in the company’s Chicago office, reporting to Laura J. Lee, SVP/Distribution.  Hallmark Channels is owned and operated by Crown Media Holdings, Inc.

Effective immediately, Scott Peyton named CFO at MUSL TV (Muscle, Ultra-Sports and Lifestyle Network) a 24/7 hi-def linear entertainment network focused on fitness, training and competitive performance. 

PCI Communications Inc., with offices in Washington and New York added Scott Lindley to the newly-created position as VP/Creative Relations.   For the last 11 years, Scott was VP/Marketing at IMN Solutions.

Si TV tapped former Telemundo Network sales executive Craig A. Geller as SVP/Advertising Sales.  Craig will manage the bi-cultural network’s on-air and digital ad sales efforts.  Craig starts his new position this week and he will be based in New York and reporting to Michael Schwimmer, CEO.

Gina McKenzie elevated to VP/Public Relations for Turner Classic Movies (TCM) and TBS up from Senior Director/Publicity for only TCM.  In her new role, Gina will continue to supervise publicity efforts for TCM as well as campaigns on behalf of TBS’ original series and specials.  She also spearheads publicity efforts for the networks’ live events such as TBS’ comedy festivals and the TCM Classic Film Festival.  Based in Atlanta, Gina reports to Karen Cassell, SVP/Public Relations, Turner Entertainment Networks. 

Bravo Media promoted Jenn Levy to VP/Development and Production.  Jenn will be the executive producer on several series for Bravo including the upcoming competition series Platinum Hit and the fourth season of docu-series Million Dollar Listing. She also manages the new series Million Dollar Decorators and all Kathy Griffin Stand Up Specials.  Based in Los Angeles, Jenn continues to report to Shari Levine, SVP/Production. 

Michael Antinoro was added at dick clark productions as EVP/Programming. Michael will work in tandem with the company’s president Orly Adelson on the development of reality and scripted projects for broadcast and online platforms.  Michael will additionally manage staff in the company’s Los Angeles and New York offices and will report directly to Mark Shapiro, CEO.

REVShare reorganized its Affiliate Relations team effective immediately:

  • Chelle Lewis upped to VP/Global Affiliate Sales and will lead the division. Based in Temecula, she reports to Brendan Condon, CEO.
  • Matt Schulde is now VP/National Accounts. Based in New York City, he will report to Chelle Lewis.
  • Shaia Ash promoted to Director/Network Operations. Based in Temecula, show also reports to Chelle Lewis.

ITV Studios Global Entertainment named Jean-Philippe Randisi to the newly-minted position of EVP/Director of Consumer Products.  Jean-Philippe’s scope includes heading the unit’s full consumer products strategy where he reports to Maria Kyriacou, Managing Director, ITV Studios Global Entertainment.

Pioneer Productions and Mentorn Media, operating as sister companies, hired Nicholas Oakley as Executive Producer/US Development.  Nicholas is charged with developing new series and adapting formats for US networks.  He will be based in Los Angeles.  In addition, Pioneer Productions added Tiffany Orvet as Development Producer for the US.  She will work closely with Nicholas Oakley based in San Francisco. 

Jamia Bigalow elevated to SVP/Affiliate Marketing for Fox Networks where she will be involved with affiliate sales with responsibility to increase brand awareness for Fox’s roster of networks.  Jamia will report to Mike Hopkins, President, Fox Networks Affiliate Sales and Marketing. 

Discovery Communications slotted two executives into new senior communications roles:

  • Elizabeth Hillman promoted to SVP/International Communications to supervise all facets of Discovery’s global communications and public relations for the company’s 140 worldwide networks and business operations spanning 180 markets.  Most recently, Elizabeth served as SVP/Communications for Discovery Channel.  Yeah Elizabeth!!
  • Laurie Goldberg bumped to the newly-created role as EVP/Public Relations for Discovery Channel and TLC.  Laurie was previously SVP/TLC Communications.   Congrats Laurie!

Engel Entertainment (EE) added Marcia Mule as Head/Programming to manage the company’s series and to work in tandem with EE’s development group.  Prior to this appointment, Marcia was VP/Head of Programming at True Entertainment, an Endemol company. 

CNN Worldwide added former NBC News’ SVP/Washington Bureau Chief Mark Whitaker in the newly-created role as EVP/Managing Editor.  Based in New York, Mark will head CNN’s editorial coverage across multiple platforms and oversee the network’s approach, tone and direction of its reporting.  Mark begins his new position February 14, reporting to Jim Walton, President/CNN Worldwide.   Mark was also previously the editor of Newsweek.

Glen Freyer elevated to SVP/Development with Atlas Media Corp., effective immediately.  Glen is based at the company’s headquarters in New York and continues to report to Kaki Kirby, EVP/Business Development and Special Projects. 

MY Tupelo Entertainment appointed Catherine Scheinman as VP/Development.  Based at the company’s New York office, Catherine will report to Michael Yudin, President.  Catherine has held previous senior-level television development and production positions with IMG Media, Lion Television and Metro Channel.
