After airing only a handful of episodes, IFC renewed its new original comedy series Portlandia for a second season. Created, written by and starring Fred Armisen (SNL) and Portland-born Carrie Brownstein, Portlandia’s first three episodes were viewed by a combined audience of more than 1.1 million total viewers and more than 700,000 A18-49 viewers, according to Live+3 data from Nielsen. IFC ordered ten half-hour episodes for the second season set to premiere in January 2012.
Throughout this month, 3net, the 3D television network joint venture of Sony Corporation, Discovery Communications and IMAX Corporation, is premiering numerous new programs. 3net launched on DIRECTV last Sunday at 8p and is now available to millions of DIRECTV customers nationwide. Controversial reality series Sister Wives will premiere a second season on TLC starting March 13, reports EW. The series highlights the polygamy lifestyle of Kody Brown and his four wives and their combined 17 children. The first season of the series prompted an investigation of the family in Utah on felony bigamy charges.
Robert and Cortney Novogratz join HGTV as the network’s newest design experts and hosts of a new 30m series, Home by Novogratz. The series features the husband and wife team as they customize residential design projects in their original and funky style. Production has started and the series is slated to premiere this summer on HGTV.
Executive chef and author, Anthony Bourdain once again offers his perspective on the world through a country’s food and culture as Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations premieres its seventh season on Travel Channel beginning February 28 at 9p. In the new season, Bourdain journeys to new and off-the-beaten track locations visiting non-touristy areas in Vienna and the Ozarks as well as places rocked by natural disasters and political unrest such as Nicaragua and Cambodia. In the opening episode, Bourdain goes to Haiti and meets with actor/humanitarian Sean Penn as he explores how the earthquake devastation has impacted the Caribbean nation. Zero Point Zero produces the series for Travel Channel.
The Style Network brings back a sophomore season of its docu-series Too Fat for 15: Fighting Back with 16 new episodes on March 7 at 8p. The series follows a group of obese teens as they battle emotional and physical barriers in an effort to drop life-threatening pounds while enrolled at the Wellspring Academy in Brevard, NC. Daisybeck Productions in association with Passion Distribution produces the series.
Sunday’s preliminary numbers for the Grammy Awards on CBS reflect the largest audience in ten years, according to Nielsen. The three-hour special event averaged 27.6 million total viewers and also averaged a 10.3 rating among A18-49. Both figures represent a +4% increase over the 2010 awards ceremony.
FOX’s Glee is the center of an agreement between Fox Television Stations and Twentieth Television over the broadcast syndication rights to the series. Glee has cleared on the Fox Television Stations in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas, Washington, D.C., Houston, Minneapolis, Phoenix, Orlando and Baltimore. This new syndication deal with Fox Television Stations follows the previously announced cable syndication agreement with Oxygen and the additional program The Glee Project premiering this June on Oxygen. Glee is produced by Ryan Murphy Television in association with 20th Century Fox Television.
Law & Order: Criminal Intent sold as a Monday-Friday strip in syndication launching this fall by NBCUniversal Domestic Television Distribution. To date, Law & Order: Criminal Intent has cleared in more than 90% of the US on the television station groups FOX, CBS, Sinclair, Hearst, LIN and Local TV and the one-hour drama is being offered to local stations as a two-hour block. This marks the first time in more than ten years that a procedural drama has been offered to stations with two back-to-back episodes. Law & Order: Criminal Intent is produced by Wolf Films and Universal Cable Productions and is distributed in the US and Canada by NBCUniversal Domestic Television Distribution.
Beginning next month, BBC Knowledge introduces a new programming block, BBC Earth to launch a variety of natural history programming worldwide from the BBC. BBC Earth rolls out first on BBC Knowledge in Australia March 4 with the series Planet Earth. On March 31, the block will debut in Asia with Planet Earth and Wild China and in Poland on April 3 with Nature’s Great Events. Later on May 8, BBC Earth will premiere in Africa and Scandinavia. BBC Earth’s programs will also be part of BBC Knowledge’s schedules in Italy and New Zealand beginning in March. Other BBC Earth programs with planned roll outs on BBC Knowledge later this year include South Pacific, Galapagos, Life in the Undergrowth, Life in Cold Blood and Life of Mammals.
Starting as early as next June, Comcast Spotlight, the advertising sales unit of Comcast Cable, will begin selling local advertising on the AT&T U-verse TV service in more than twenty markets where both Comcast and AT&T provide television service. As per the new deal between Comcast Spotlight and AT&T Advanced Ad Solutions the market list includes: Atlanta, Champaign, Chicago, Detroit, Flint, Fresno, Grand Rapids, Hartford, Houston, Indianapolis, Jackson, Jacksonville, Lansing, Little Rock, Memphis, Miami, Monterey, Nashville, Sacramento, San Francisco, West Palm Beach.
Atlantic Canada’s integrated entertainment company, Best Boy Entertainment spawned Best Boy International (BBI) which has become Atlantic Canada’s first international television distribution company charged with marketing Best Boy’s assets to broadcasters worldwide. Furthermore, Best Boy Media (BBM) was established to develop and produced interactive content using Best Boy’s current and upcoming slate of projects.
Roseanne Barr is making a comeback to television in a new untitled docu-series for Lifetime Television. The series, with 16 half-hours will follow Barr as she operates her 40-acre macadamia nut and live stock farm in Hawaii. Premiering on Lifetime this year, the series is produced by 3 Ball Productions/Eyeworks USA and Full Moon & High Tide Productions. Barr will serve as executive producer along with JD Roth, Todd A. Nelson, Brant Pinvidic and Steven Greener; Jake Pentland will also produce.
Discovery Communications CEO David Zaslav said the company will invest a further $50 million in OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network to create new programming. Discovery Communications has already invested $189 million in the network which launched on January 1. Zaslav says he is “very encouraged” about OWN and surmises the network will break even on an operating profit level this year. Zaslav also indicated Planet Green is up for a re-brand saying he thinks “something else more meaningful” could happen with the network.
Jesse L. Martin (Law & Order) landed the first role on drama pilot Hallelujah for ABC from Marc Cherry. The plot is set in the town of Hallelujah, Tennessee which is being ripped apart by forces of good and evil. The town is saved when a mysterious stranger comes to town ushering in justice, peace and a restored faith of its residents.
Casting Call: New Screen Entertainment, producers of the original Extreme Makeover series, are casting for a pilot and are seeking people in the Southern California area who have had their life ruined by plastic surgery procedures. One out of four people are unhappy with their plastic surgery results and the “surgeon of last resort” on the show will try to correct damage done by previous plastic surgery. Friday A18-49 Analysis: Univision topped a tightly-packed race Friday night delivering a 1.6/5 A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen. Univision’s Eva Luna shone in first place at 8p with a 2.0/7 and FOX’s Kitchen Nightmares was next at 1.5/5. During 9p, CBS’ CSI: NY and Univision’s Triunfo del Amor tied for #1 at 1.6/5 each while a three-way tie for second place happened between ABC’s 20/20, NBC’s Dateline and FOX’s Fringe at 1.4/5 apiece. ABC’s 20/20 emerged a winner at 10p with a 1.9/6 and NBC’s Dateline was #2 at 1.4/5.
