Good morning. It’s Tuesday, February 14, 2012, and this is your weekly issue of Cynopsis: Classified Advantage!
Who was your favorite teacher in High School, besides the handsome Phys. Ed. Teacher? The one who knew most about their subject? Probably not because how would you know? The easiest? Perhaps while you were there, easy teachers are great at the time, but as we mature, we see them for what they really were, lazy. My bet is that most people’s favorite teacher was the one that was most enthusiastic, not only about their subject but also by the process of teaching it.
Want to become a better salesperson? Do what your favorite teacher did. Sell something you love and love selling it.
I used to sell Apple products. I wanted a job there because with very few exceptions, I believe that Apple consistently puts out the best products. When I had my interview, that’s exactly what I told them. I wanted to sell the best, and why, through my own experiences, I thought they were the best.
I was hired on the spot. Once on the floor, my enthusiasm for the products helped me sell more merchandise in seven months in that particular store, than anyone had ever sold in a year.
While some of my co-workers saw selling for Apple as just another job, others were unable to convey their faith in the product in a tangible way, and others went for the quick, hard sell. All of them sold merchandise, but not in the same way I did.
I knew if I allowed my belief in the product to become evident without being a zealot, that if I told the truth about some of the shortcomings, (what is the deal with the Apple mouse?) but it was still the best product out there, they would believe me, even more, they would trust me. My goal wasn’t to fill the cash register, it was to give the consumer enough information about the product, that it became their decision to purchase it, not my pressure.
You can’t do that without enthusiasm, and I believe you cannot portray that kind of enthusiasm without the belief in the product.
So what ever product you’re selling, find the reason why you’re selling it, other than a paycheck. Believe in it, and be enthused by it. If you do, you might not be the best salesperson on staff, but you will certainly be a better one.

Research indicates for the best personal and professional development it’s important to focus on building your strengths. Strengths are a combination of talents, skills and knowledge. While this combination is very powerful, the first part of the equation, talent, must be present. Everyone has talents. Many people haven’t evaluated their true talents. Once a talent is identified, the acquisition of knowledge and skills enables a strength to be born!
Three Step Formula to Identify Your Talents:
First, identify those things that are natural and easy for you to do. These would indicate that you are using a talent.
Second, recall the things you do where time just seems to fly by. In other words, when are you “in the flow” of doing something? This is a good indication that you are using your natural talents when you perform these activities.
Third, make a list of the activities that make you feel happy or joyful. These would be things you do because you not only feel good about them, but that you feel accomplished and satisfied.
• Once you identified your talents, categorize them into each of the following categories:
• People (interpersonal communication and interacting with others)
• Ideas (creativity/problem solving)
• Things (aesthetic, artistic, pysical activities)
• Traits (characteristics that make us unique and valuable to ourselves and others)
• Knowledge (using data and information about ourselves, others, the world)
• Analysis (evaluating, debating, examining)
To truly make your talents a strength, determine how you can acquire additional knowledge or find opportunities to hone your skills?
It is important to know how often you get the chance to use your talents in your current profession. If you don’t think you use them enough, it can be a strong indication to consider a career change. We are happiest at work when we have the opportunity to use our talents and cultivate them to become real strengths. In fact, when we use our talents, we likely don’t even call it work.

How well do I have to know someone and what is the best way to ask a superior within the company to be a mentor without putting them on the spot?
Having a mentor in your career is a true asset. A mentor provides career coaching and advice they can help you understand the culture and politics of an organization and provide the one-on-one guidance to help you advance in your career. Many companies and industry organizations offer mentoring programs. Programs generally will match the mentor and mentee to provide the greatest success for the mentee.
If your company does not offer a mentoring program (suggest it to the HR department as a new employee benefit) ask for assistance to implement a less formal mentoring program with the superior you have chosen in the company. A mentoring program is based on communication and it is important that both the mentor and mentee know their responsibilities in the relationship for it to be successful.
If the company is not going to offer a program, then it would be appropriate to identify someone you respect and ask for one meeting to discuss something that you believe would be of interest. From there you can then determine how interested the person might be in having a mentoring relationship with you. Many people are very flattered and willing to help you, provided they don’t suspect you are using the time or their position to have them advance your career.
How do you deal with a co-worker who has constantly been a back stabber and trying to undermine everything I do?
People that act like this in the workplace have a lot of negative energy and the mentality is generally that they must always win and you must lose. It is important for you to stand-up for yourself and not remain a victim to problems or conflicts at work.
The first step is communication, use open-ended questions to try to determine your co-workers version of the situation and listen to their response. Next make them aware of your feeling and emotions, consider starting the conversation by saying, “I am feeling uncomfortable with …”.
It’s important for you to offer ideas of how to resolve the situation but be sure to ask your co-worker for their ideas say, “How can we make this a better situation for both of us?” By working together for a solution you will have greater success because your co-worker probably wasn’t even aware there was a problem.

Young Broadcasting, LLC tapped Bob Simone as VP/GM of WLNS-TV, the CBS affiliate in Lansing, MI. Prior to this appointment, Bob served as President/GM at Belo Corp’s duopoly in Tucson: KMSB FOX 11 and KTTU MY Net 18.
New York-based Kinetic elevated David Krupp to EVP/Kinetic Client Services and Tanza Bove to EVP/Commercial Operations. David and Tanza previously both served as Managing Directors. In his new role, David will lead and oversee client delivery for all of Kinetic’s US offices. Tanza will manage all facets of the company’s operational development.
Travel Channel named Marietta Hurwitz to SVP/GM of Digital. Marietta will manage the network’s brand across digital platforms. Based dually in Travel Channel’s Chevy Chase and New York offices, Marietta will report to Shannon O’Neill, CFO.
Island Def Jam Music Group upped Gabrielle Peluso to GM/Def Jam Recordings. Based in New York, Gabrielle will head the company’s daily activities, scheduling and organization for its artists while reporting to Steve Bartels, President/COO.
Gerhard Zeiler was tapped as President of Turner Broadcasting System International, the worldwide portfolio of branded television networks and associated properties under Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. Gerhard joins from RTL Group, a unit of Bertelsmann AG where he is currently the CEO. In his new position, Gerhard will head the company’s international division’s strategy to shore up established interests and develop new business.
Effective immediately, Cristina Schwarz will take on the responsibility as VP/Programming and Production for Univision Cable Networks by Univision Communications Inc. In her new role, Cristina will jointly report to Jessica Rodriguez, SVP of Univision Cable Networks and Sebastian Trujillo, SVP/Operating Manager for Galavision.
Effective immediately, Bob Massie was hired as Head/Entertainment at DCD Media-owned September Films. Bob will be based in London and will manage the company’s present roster of shows in the UK.
Peter Risafi has become VP/Brand Creative and Production for Food Network and Cooking Channel. Peter will be part of the marketing team and will supervise the creative strategy and implementation for both brands in addition to overseeing the in-house creative services group and all creative agency relationships.
Thrillist Media Group added two executives to its roster: Adam Chandler as President/Sales and CRO and Shane Rahmani as VP/Business Development and Strategy. Adam is based in New York and will concentrate on overseeing the content monetization of the company by expanding advertiser opportunities across all platforms. Shane will also be based in New York and will be in charge of developing new partnerships and leading strategic growth efforts in the areas of new content, commerce and revenue opportunities.
Betsy Braun joined Hearst Television Inc.’s WCVB-TV and WMUR-TV in Boston as Program Director as of January 12, 2012. In her new role, Betsy supervises programming for both stations and media relations for WCVB-TV. Prior to this appointment, Betsy was with Braun Media & Marketing.
Reality TV production studio, Pilgrim Studios founded and owned by CEO Craig Piligian hired four new executives and announced several promotions: Nicholas Caprio joins as VP/Original Programming after serving as EVP at Gay Rosenthal Productions; Rob Hill was added as VP/Development working on unscripted series and joining from UK-based production company Optomen; Beth Miller will take on the new role as VP/Scripted Programming after having spent ten years with Disney as an executive at Disney Channel and ABC Family; and Jon Unger joins as Manager/Development coming from ABC. Under promotions, Pilgrim Studios elevated Johnny Gould to SVP/Original Programming and Development; Jamie Fleischman was upped to Manager/Development; and Jake Shelton was also promoted to Manager/Development.
Former producer of HBO Documentary Films, Julie Anderson was hired by WNET, parent company of New York’s public television stations THIRTEEN and WLIW21 and operator of NJTV to become Executive Producer/Documentaries and Development for THIRTEEN. Julie will manage documentary limited series in addition to single documentaries and develop new programming ideas. Julie will also be involved in fundraising, supervising production and post-production, delivery and distribution as well as broadcast and non-broadcast issues of production. She will report to Stephen Segaller, VP/Programming.
Jim Barnum advances to VP/Deputy General Counsel for Hubbard Broadcasting, Inc. where he will additionally serve in this role for the company’s operating companies. Jim will continue to offer legal advice to Hubbard Broadcasting’s management team and its news operations in the areas of programming content and intellectual property matters, labor and employment areas as well as compliance with state and federal regulations.
Under a new expansion, Media Storm has opened a new West Coast office in Los Angeles. Jill Rosenbaum was appointed as Director/Strategy to lead the new office and spearhead new business efforts in Hollywood. Jill will work with Co-Founder/Managing Partner, Craig Woerz and Managing Director/Operations and Development, Dene Callas in addition to her counterparts in the agency’s South Norwalk, CT and New York City offices. Furthermore, Media Storm was named agency of record for Open Road Films.
