Cynopsis: Kids!
2/13/07
Good morning. It’s Tuesday, February 13, 2007 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.
Love will be in the air on Boomerang this Valentine’s Day when the network line-up will include romance-themed episodes of shows featuring characters such as lovelorn Pepe Le Pew as well as Tom & Jerry, Popeye, Yogi Bear, Magilla Gorilla, Top Cat, Dexter, Speed Buggy, The Flintstones, Droopy and The Jetson’s, all mired by the spell of Cupid’s arrows. The daylong event begins Wednesday, February 14 at 6a.
Nelvana’ preschool animated TV series, Max & Ruby, is bouncing into the spring with new episodes. In the US the 14 new episodes of Max & Ruby will begin airing on Nick Jr. from April 6, and on Noggin beginning April 7. The new episodes recently began airing Canada on Corus’ Treehouse TV.
Todobebe, the pregnancy and parenting focused Spanish language program, has entered into a partnership with NBC Universal Television Distribution to distribute Spanish language DVDs and CDs based on the Todobebe TV format and kid’s music CDs. Todobebe and NBC Universal Television Distribution will also release Todobebe Canticuentos (Storysongs), a Spanish language CD this spring. The CD will also include a booklet with the lyrics so everybody can sing along. The Todobebe series originally launched in 2003 and currently airs in the US on the Telemundo Network on Saturday mornings, and via Televisa Networks in Mexico, with special segments running in Colombia on Caracol TV.
Disney Channel has informed us that Pixar’s animated movie The Incredibles will make its cable TV debut on ABC Family rather than Toon Disney as initially announced. The movie is set to make its broadcast TV premiere on NBC.
MARKETING/LICENSING
The Game Factory, a publisher of kid-targeted video and computer games, has inked a worldwide license deal with Build-A-Bear Workshop Inc. Under the publishing deal Game Factory will market the first Nintendo DS title based on the in-store experience. Targeted to kids 5+, the game is set in the Build-A-Bear Workshop store and allows players to create their own 3D bears, choosing outfits, stitching and names, and then they can play with their creation in 20 different themed mini-games that can be unlocked as players win virtual money allowing them also to purchase additional accessories for their bear. Developed by Neko Entertainment, the game will feature a wi-fi multiplayer game mode and is slated to launch in time for holiday 2007.
Kabillion, a multi-platform kids’ service, is offering a group of free Valentine e-greetings featuring comedian/actor/host Howie Mandel’s animated alter ego, 4-year-old Bobby, star of the animated series Bobby’s World. The series, which ran on Fox (1990-98), was recently re-launched on the Kabillion broadband site and Comcast Cable’s Select On-Demand Kabillion VOD channel. Bobby’s World is distributed worldwide by Taffy Entertainment, which is building a licensing and consumer products campaign around the property.
Warner Bros. Consumer Products and Klutz have entered into a Harry Potter licensing deal. Under the agreement Klutz will publish and distribute, Building Cards Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, which is part of the publishers Building Cards construction line. The Hogwarts Building Cards set is based on the castle featured in the Harry Potter films and is scheduled for publication in May 2007. Each package of the cards comes with a deck of illustrated cards in various shapes accompanied by a set of instructions on how to build the specific structures (slot-to-slot construction) . Of course Hogwarts is no small edifice so the new Building Card set will be packaged with 90 leaves that break into 350 building cards, and also comes with a Harry Potter figurine. Klutz is a division of Scholastic.
LeapFrog Enterprises, Inc.’s 2007 line of toys includes the launch of ClickStart My First Computer, targeted to preschoolers the product isn’t really a PC but rather a keyboard, shaped like a puppy, and which connects wirelessly to the TV to introduce basic computing and early learning skills including keyboarding, using a mouse and learning colors, shapes, some phonics and early math. Additional software will be available. LeapFrog is also showcasing updated Fly Pen tool, called Fly Pen Fusion (kids/teens 10-16), which has lots more memory, as well as 12 new software titles for its Leapster learning products, and the WordLaunch Learn-to-Read System (ages 4+) and Brightlings Family, a line of activity toys for babies and toddlers.
Learning Resources, a manufacturer of educational toys, is introducing several new science toys this week at Toy Fair: Spill Your Guts Human Body Game (ages 7+); Solar System Foam Floor Puzzle (ages 4+); Inflatable Parts of a Skeleton 15 life-size bones that snap together (ages 4+); Caught in the Web Insect Game (ages 5+); Five Senses and Human Skeleton Bingo Games (ages 7+). In addition to making science fun, the new products are deigned to help kids and families build science knowledge and prepare for the upcoming launch of the public school annual science assessment tests, which will be put in place for the 2007-8 school year.
Elsewhere Max & Ruby will see the launch of new DVD and merchandise this spring. The new DVD titles, Easter with Max & Ruby from Nick Jr., distributed by Paramount in the US, and Max and the Easter Bunny, will be available beginning March 13, 2007 from Kaboom Entertainment on Corus’ Treehouse Presents DVD label in Canada. New products will include Max & Ruby Bean Babies from Ty Inc. in both countries; Buzz Bee Toys will offer bowling sets and musical banks this spring in Zellers’ stores in Canada; Character Bouncers and Junior Skip-Jumper and chocolate from Leese Enterprises. The series is based on the book series by Rosemary Wells.
