Cynopsis: Sports
02.12.13

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, February 12, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

The NHL and the NHL Players’ Association are set to meet once again with the hopes of ending a standoff. This time, however, the two organizations will be on the same side, when they meet on Thursday and Friday with the IOC in order to find a way to let players participate in the 2014 Sochi Olympics, according to The Globe and Mail. The report states that owners and players are looking for the IOC and IIHF to grant “access to players’ and NHL teams’ regular doctors, insurance, a cut of the revenue they bring in and the schedule regarding both Olympic participation and other international competition.”

On the Air

The NCAA released its annual college football attendance report, noting that in 2012, nearly 49 million fans attended college football games. That tally marks the third-highest total in history, but was down from last season’s all-time mark of 49.6 million people. Michigan once again led the pack, averaging 112,252 for its six home games this season. Other schools topping the 100,000 threshold included Ohio St., Alabama, and Texas. Meanwhile, the Southeastern Conference, which has led in average attendance for the past 15 seasons, was boosted by the entries of Texas A&M and Missouri, to draw 7,478,304 fans in 2012. Among FCS teams, Appalachian State led attendance for the fifth time in six years with an average of 26,358 fans per game. Other schools in the division that broke the 20,000 mark included Montana, James Madison University and Old Dominion.

Dish Network hit the courtroom yesterday over its 2009 lawsuit seeking $150 million from ESPN for allegedly offering competing MSOs better licensing terms for sports programming, according to Bloomberg. Dish is claiming that ESPN violated a “most-favored-nation clause” in their distribution agreement, which it said requires the sports network to offer Dish the same terms it offers a competitor. ESPN states that the company did eventually offer Dish the terms offered to competitors.

Tennis Channel has some new blood as the network formally announced the additions of Jo Ankier, Jonathan Novack and Jessica Vilchis for its Court Report news segments. Ankier’s broadcast career includes reporting for ESPN International, where she hosts and covers a wide range of sports, and does work for global editions of SportsCenter. Novack has been a TV host and news reporter who has worked across multiple media channels throughout the country. Vilchis’ broadcast career includes work for E! News Now and for NBC Universal Sports during the 2012 London Olympic Games.

FOX Soccer is beefing up its programming, announcing the additions of five exclusive CONCACAF competitions that include the 2015 CONCACAF Women’s World Cup Qualifying, 2013 CONCACAF Men’s Under-17 and Under-20 Championships and 2014 CONCACAF Women’s Under-17 and Under-20 Championships. Up first will be the Men’s Under-20 CONCACAF Championship starting Monday at 6:30p.

Big Ten Commissioner Jim Delany told ESPN.com that league coaches are now supporting more night games in November in order to land more primetime slots. Delany said Penn State, Nebraska and Ohio State were some of the schools making the push. Game could start as soon as the 2013 season.

The upcoming United States Football League has inked an agreement with a real estate development company to build multiple commercial developments throughout the designed to host a mid-sized stadium for a USFL team. The league and partner have already the first five of these markets and plan to begin construction on stadiums to seat up to 20,000 fans in time for the league’s inaugural season, which is scheduled to kick off in the spring of 2014. The markets include locations in Southern California, Texas, Louisiana and Alabama.

The longtime Voice of the Cougars, Jay Monsen, passed away over the weekend at the age of 79. Monsen began calling BYU football and basketball games on KBYU-TV in 1972. He retired in 1998, but continued to call play-by-play for the women’s basketball games on BYU Radio through 2010.
