Showtime is renewing Dexter for a sixth season on the eve of the fifth season’s finale airing this Sunday at 9p. Production on the sixth season will begin next spring in Los Angeles.
ABC announced the upcoming Wednesday series premiere dates of its new comedies Mr. Sunshine and Happy Endings. Mr. Sunshine, starring Matthew Perry and Allison Janney will open February 9 at 930p, taking the place of Cougar Town which returns to the lineup on April 13. Happy Endings, the new ensemble comedy helmed by Elisha Cuthbert will bow April 13 at 10p once the frosh drama Off the Map ends its run.

ABC has taken episodes of the legal drama The Whole Truth off its December schedule. The network has not stated whether or not it will air the remaining seven episodes. The Whole Truth was canceled by ABC in October and last week’s ep posted a 0.9 rating among A18-49 and 3.6 million viewers. In its stead, ABC will air repeats of other series and a rebroadcast of the CMA Country Christmas special until its new medical drama Off the Map debuts January 12.
FX decided to cancel its frosh series Terriers citing its low ratings as the reason compared to other former shows on the network. Terriers averaged a 0.49 rating and 509,000 among A18-49 which is well below other canceled FX series such as Dirt and Damages.
Animal Planet is bringing back its series Pit Boss for a second season launching January 29. Over twelve new episodes, viewers will get to know more about Shorty, founder of Shorty’s Rescue, his pit bull rescue effort and Shortywood Inc., a talent management company for little people. Pit Boss is produced by Intuitive Entertainment for Animal Planet.
AMC’s season one finale of The Walking Dead on Sunday at 10p delivered 4 million A18-49 viewers. The series also averaged 3.5 million A18-49, making The Walking Dead the most-watched drama series in basic cable history for the demo, according to NMR. Additionally, Sunday’s concluding episode attracted 3.5 million A25-54 viewers as well as 6 million total viewers.
Golf Channel debuts its new docu-reality series Pipe Dream, chronicling the comeback of pro golfer Mark Burk, starting January 11 at 930p. During 10 episodes, Pipe Dream relates the life of Burk who went from tournament winner to becoming homeless and the journey he is on to restore his name and his career in golf. Actor James Remar is the narrator for the series.
This Saturday, Neil Patrick Harris will host Spike TV’s annual Video Game Awards which also includes appearances by a slew of celebrities such as Nathan Fillion, Nick Swardson, Denise Richards and cast members from It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia among others. The awards show begins at 8p.
GroupM released its revised This Year, Next Year global advertising spending report pertaining to measured media. According to GroupM’s forecast, measured media will likely go beyond the $500 billion mark to nearly $502 billion for the first time ever in 2011 following an economic recovery spanning the 70 countries included in the report. This worldwide ad spending increase for next year equates to a 5.8% bump over 2010 spending at $474 billion. In the US, next year’s ad spending is predicted to grow to $147.7 billion, a 3.7% rise over the $142.5 billion in 2010. Furthermore, global ad spending will likely increase this year by 5.9% over the $448 billion accumulated in 2009. In the US, the 2010 ad spending should come in at $141 billion, a 1.2% boost over 2009.
Friday’s series premiere of Gold Rush: Alaska at 10p on Discovery Channel posted a 1.10 rating with A25-54 and averaged 2.03 million total viewers.
Football broadcaster and former NFL player, Don Meredith, 72, died on December 5 in Santa Fe after suffering a brain hemorrhage followed by a coma. Mr. Meredith was one of the first stars of the Dallas Cowboys and also was one of the original broadcast team members on ABC’s Monday Night Football working alongside Keith Jackson and Howard Cosell. Mr. Meredith became one of the more popular sports broadcasters because of his down-home sayings and country charm and humor. Following the 1973 football season, Mr. Meredith left ABC for a three-year period at NBC. He then returned to ABC’s Monday Night Football crew in 1977 and retired in 1984.

Entertainment Studios, Inc. said it reached a multi-year carriage extension with Verizon FiOS TV for its six 24-hour hi-def television networks including Cars.TV, Comedy.TV, ES.TV, MyDestination.TV, Pets.TV and Recipe.TV.
Starz Entertainment approved a new 1960s period series titled Magic City with the centerpiece being a glamorous hotel located in Miami Beach. Starz will soon begin casting for the 10-episode drama series with production commencing early next year in Miami. Magic City is slated to debut in 2012. The plot is about the Miramar Hotel and its visionary head, Ike Evans who must tangle with the Mob, deal with his complex family and exist in a city located just 200 miles from where Fidel Castro is taking control of Cuba. Writer/producer Mitch Glazer developed Magic City and is penning the first three episodes and eight episodes overall. Media Talent Group is producing the series with its CEO Geyer Kosinski executive producing with Tony To. Starz holds all US rights to Magic City.
Logo is moving forward on three new original series for its 2011 slate:
- Be Good Johnny Weir – Logo picked up the first season of the series featuring the Olympic athlete with a big personality containing 7 30m episodes, 1 60m ep and 1 90m documentary set to premiere in winter 2011. Logo will then produce an exclusive second season of the series with 10 30m episodes set to premiere summer 2011. Original Media produced season one and will additionally produce season two.
- Pretty Hurts – Comedic reality series starring Rand Rusher, known as Beverly Hills’ “injector to the stars.” The series follows Rand and his eclectic team and the relationships they have with their over-the-top diva clients. Ten 30m episodes will debut February 2011. Go Go Luckey Entertainment produces.
- Setup Squad – Docu-reality series where relationship misfits get a crash course in dating at an agency run by Renee Lee who relies on her pro “wing” women and men from her agency to setup clients in social situations. Ten 60m episodes will premiere in April 2011. Produced by Leftfield Pictures.

Friday A18-49 Analysis: UNIV did the best among A18-49 Friday night at a 1.8/6, according to final national ratings from Nielsen. UNIV’s Eva Luna won by a slim margin at 8p with a 1.5/5 and CBS’ Medium was #2 at 1.4/5. UNIV remained in first place during 9p with Soy Tu Duena at 2.4/8 and CBS trailed in second place with CSI: NY at 1.7/6. ABC had a turn in #1 at 10p with 20/20 at 1.9/6 and CBS played second fiddle again, this time with Blue Bloods at 1.7/6.
