NBC is priming a new singing competition series with reality producers Mark Burnett (Survivor) and John de Mol (Big Brother) titled The Voice of America, set to roll out this spring. The series is based on a Dutch show called The Voice of Holland which surpasses both The X Factor and American Idol as the top-rated talent competition show in The Netherlands. The Voice of America will feature three competition phases including a blind audition where the coaches can hear the singer though not see them; the battle stage; and the live performance shows. Four celebrity artists will serve as coaches to their own team of singers and will mentor singers during the competition. In the blind audition, coaches will press a button if they like a singer and if a singer generates interest from more than one coach they get to choose which coach to work with. Singers not selected will be eliminated. In the battle stage, coaches pit two of their team singers against each other to perform the same song and a studio audience will decide who advances. In the final live performance phase, the best contestants will compete against each other and the viewers will vote to see who advances in the competition until the final singer receives a recording contract during the season finale. The Voice of America is produced by Warner Horizon Television and de Mol’s Talpa Media, the first project from the two companies’ joint development agreement announced earlier in 2010. De Mol is the creator of The Voice of America and will serve as executive producer along with Burnett. David Arquette is teaming with Merv Griffin Entertainment on the development of a celebrity game show titled Ranking the Stars, based on a Japanese format. The premise is a group of seven celebrity panelists ranking each other on various topics from most likely to least likely. Participating celebrities will play for charity while regular contestants will win or lose if they correctly predict how the panelists rank themselves. The show is being pitched as a weekly primetime series after the holidays with Arquette as host and creative consultant while Merv Griffin Entertainment’s president Roy Bank will be the executive producer. The format is based on one from Asahi TV that is presently a series in the Netherlands, Korea and India as well as other countries. Don Cheadle will headline and be an executive producer for Showtime’s new pilot titled House of Lies that is created, written and executive produced by Matthew Carnahan. The 30m, dark comedy is based on the book House of Lies: How Management Consultants Steal Your Watch and Tell You the Time by Martin Kihn. Production on the pilot begins next February in Los Angeles. Cheadle will play Marty, an ambitious though cutthroat consultant who will do anything to get his clients the information they want. Jessika Borsiczky (Flash Forward) will also serve as executive producer along with Stephen Hopkins (Californication, 24) who will also direct. Comedian Adam Carolla is set to star in an untitled auto-focused pilot for Speed Channel along with Wall Street Journal auto writer Dan Neil, former NBA star John Salley and Matt Farah from the website, Smoking Tire. Mandt Bros. Productions will produce the pilot which is described as similar to Top Gear and the former Fox Sports Network show, The Best Damn Sports Show Period where Salley was a regular. The Speed Channel show will consist of auto news and discussions about cars as well as pre-recorded segments produced in the field. Mandt Bros. also received a six-episode series order from Food Network for Ice Brigade about the upscale ice sculpting business, Ice Sculptures Ltd. based in Grand Rapids, MI. Neil and Michael Mandt will function as executive producers on both projects. Melissa Rivers will appear as a regular over the next three months on the new syndicated entertainment news show, Access Hollywood Live from NBC Universal Television Distribution. Rivers will be featured on bi-weekly segments where she will offer commentary on celebrity red carpet fashions throughout the awards season, working with the show’s co-hosts Billy Bush and Kit Hoover. E! announced long-time award show/event specials producer Michael Levitt will be the Executive Producer of the network’s Live from the Red Carpet specials airing prior to all major televised entertainment award shows. Levitt’s first presentation will be the Live from the Red Carpet: The Golden Globes on January 16. Ryan Seacrest and Giuliana Rancic are hosting the show. Leighton Meester, currently starring on The CW’s Gossip Girl said over the weekend she will depart the series in two years once her contract expires. Even though she says she enjoys being on the show, Meester would like to pursue other projects. Meester appears in the upcoming film Country Strong released in theaters January 7.
