CYNTHIA TURNER’S
CYNOPSIS

12/14/04

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, December 14, 2004, and this is your first early morning briefing.

In the early returns for Sunday night, CBS led the evening with a 6.1/14 A18-49, just two tenths of a rating point ahead of ABC’s 5.9/14, according to fast national numbers from Nielsen Media Research.  Fox followed at 3.9/9, as did NBC 2.9/7 and WB 0.8/2.  At 7pm, Fox’s NFL Runover won the hour with a  6.2/17.  #2 in the hour was on ABC with AFV posting a 3.3/9, and then by CBS’ 60 Minutes.  At 8pm, the first hour of the Survivor 2-hour finale led the hour with a 6.9/16, with Extreme Makeover: Home Edition in the #2 post with a 5.9/14.  An hour of Simpsons/Arrested Development was #3 for the hour with a 4.0/9.  At 9p Desperate Housewives prevailed with a 9.3/20, overpowering the final hour of the final episode of Survivor which earned a strong 7.9/17.  CBS won the 10p hour for its Survivor Reunion special delivering a solid 6.8/16.  Boston Legal followed with a 5.0/12.

Officially, Regis Philbin will sub for Dick Clark on ABC’s Rockin’ New Year’s Eve on December 31, as Clark continues to recover from a mild stroke.  This will be the first New Year’s Eve Clark has missed in more than 30 years. Hosting the west coast portion of the show will be Ashlee Simpson – as previously announced.  Clark is expected to make a full recovery.

Casting / Development / Production

  • PAX TV has ordered up another 13 episodes of its freshman series America’s Most Talented Kids (Mindless Entertainment) with host Dave Coulier.  The new season of episodes are scheduled to launch in January 2005.
  • Several projects with several nets are in the offing for Mandt Bros. Prods including an unscripted pilot for Fox Sports Net called The Incredible Sports Chase. The challenge driven project has two teams on a mad-dash scavenger hunt of various sports related items.  According to Hollywood Reporter, Mandt Bros. also have projects out to Travel Channel, Court TV and E! Entertainment.
  • WB has ordered a script for an untitled pilot project starring David Arquette from Coquette Prods (Arquette and his wife Courtney Cox Arquette). Per Variety, the story is about a guy who runs a newsstand when he falls in love.
  • Prison Break (20th), the drama project for Fox, has added two more cast members – Robin Tunney as the attorney for the brother trying to get himself sent to prison where he in turn can help his innocent brother break out; and Jessalyn Gilsig has been cast in a role for the pilot that may well turn into a recurring role – the prisoner’s ex-girlfriend and mother to their child.
  • Actor Eric McCormack (Will & Grace) has set up his own production company and has named Michael Forman to head it up.  Big Cattle Prods hangs its shingle at NBC Universal Television Studio, which also has a first look deal, per Variety.

Fox will have a new series on the air come January 3rd called Who’s Your Daddy? with host Finola Hughes. If you’re not familiar, here’s the premise.  A reality/unscripted series where one young woman, adopted at an early age, is trying to figure out which of the adult men presented, is actually her father whom she has never met. The goal of the non-father participants is to try and convince her of their authenticity.  Nice.   There are 8 eps altogether which kick off with a 90m premiere January 3 at 8pm.

Since the broadcast networks news organizations broke into syndicated fare yesterday afternoon at approx 4:45pm -15 minutes before local news was set to start on many local affiliates – to deliver the Peterson verdict, does that mean we can look forward to a group apology some time later on today?

NBC will go all HDTV with its late night schedule beginning next year.  The Tonight Show has aired in HDTV since 1999, and as of April 2005, the rest of the network’s late night lineup begins its conversion.  Late Night with Conan O’Brien goes first, SNL with the premiere of its 2005-06 season, as will Last Call with Carson Daly.  Also airing in HDTV next year will be the Macy’s Fourth of July Fireworks Spectacular, and the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.  As for the net’s primetime schedule, currently 90% of the scripted shows air in high def.  Additionally, NBC’s Universal HD, available in approx 25 million homes, launched December 1.

MTV will launch three new US customized MTV channels specifically designed to fulfill the programming needs of those people with an affiliation to a home country or culture that is not catered to by American mainstream media.  These new channels will feature music and other programming from MTV’s international channels and original programming, promos and packaging created in the US.  Launching first will be MTV Desi, which will serve audiences with roots in the Indian sub-continent living in the US.  MTV Desi will be followed by MTV China and MTV Korea in 2005, with additional channels to follow.  Nusrat Durrani has been named as GM/SVP MTV World.

The 62nd Annual Golden Globe Awards will air live on NBC, Sunday, January 16, 8p.  For a full list of the The Hollywood Foreign Press nominees announced yesterday, go to http://www.hfpa.org/nominations2005.html.

For those of you who don’t live in NYC (yes there are of few of them), you’ll no doubt be delighted to learn that the WPIX annual Yule Log tradition, a loop of a fire in a fireplace with music, will expand beyond the NY DMA this year, courtesy of Superstation WGN.  Lest you smirk, be it known that within the NY market, the Yule Log has won its time period for the past three years (it was on hiatus for the dozen years preceding 2001). Alas, to enjoy the fire, you’ll have to be awake in the wee hours on Christmas waiting for Santa – it starts at 130am and continue for four hours.

Cynopsis Question for You:  Do you think the infomercials a station/network carry (be it a teeth whitener, a religious program, or a college girls on vacation video) are a reflection on the station itself?  And if so, does your station/network take that into account when clearing infomercials for air?  Reply
with ‘infomercials’ in the subject line, results tomorrow.

Rebecca Marks has been upped to EVP/West Coast based Publicity Division for NBC Universal Television Group PR.  The announcement came from Jeff Zucker, President/NBC Universal Television Group and Anna Perez, EVP/Corp. Communications, NBC Universal, to whom Rebecca reports.  She will be responsible for all publicity efforts at NBC Entertainment, NBC Universal Cable, NBC Universal Television Studio and NBC Universal Television Distribution.

David Rudolph has been named SVP of the Turner Broadcasting System, Inc.’s newly formed New Products Development Group.  Reporting to Jim McCaffrey, EVP/Operations & Strategy for TBS, Inc., David will direct a team charged with working across Turner divisions to identify and analyze market concepts and develop internal ideas leading to products of scale outside the company’s traditional network businesses.  He will be based in Atlanta at TBS, Inc. headquarters, and begin in his new post as of January 3,2005.

Alfredo Richard has been named VP/Corporate Communications for the Telemundo Network. Alfredo will be responsible for directing public relations, media relations, events, community relations, employee and corporate communications for the network. The announcement was made by Jim McNamara, President/CEO, Telemundo Communications Group, Inc., to whom Alfredo reports.

John Saade has officially returned to ABC as VP/Alternative Series and Specials for ABC Entertainment.  In his first tenure at the network, Saade was involved in the development of The Bachelor,  The Bachelorette, The Mole and the series Houston Medical. Also moving into the same dept is Vicki Dummer as VP/Alternative Series & Specials, from the network’s current programming dept.

Diane Weingart has been named VP/Affiliate Marketing, it was announced today by Peter Ruben, EVP/Affiliate Relations for the TV shopping network
HSN.  Diane is responsible for developing and supporting marketing partnerships with HSN’s hundreds of affiliates, increasing affiliate-driven sales and revenue and providing ongoing marketing support.

The History Channel
presents This Day in History:
1911:  Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen reaches the South Pole ahead of his British rival, Robert Falcon Scott.  Preparing for an expedition to Antarctica, Amundsen learned of Scott’s similar preparations.  Amundsen’s expedition won the race to the Pole and, equally important, returned safely to base camp in late January.  Scott reached the pole roughly a month later but never returned.  In 1903, Amundsen had become the first to navigate the Northwest Passage, sought since the time of Sir Francis Drake.

No!”   THE OPENING NARRATION OF “THE FALL GUY.” Kudos to:  Linda Kitchens-PTCUMC/Peachtree City; Dave Riedel-ABC News/NY; David Bank-RBC Capital Markets/NY; Chip Green-Mediaedge:cia NA/NY; Joanna Kobylar-Sally Beauty Supply/Dallas; Steve Ridgeway-KVOA/Tucson; Kurtis Humfeld-KMSP, WFTC/Minneapolis; Jerry Wise-KTVT/Ft.
