Good morning. It’s Tuesday, December 13, 2011, and this is your weekly issue of Cynopsis: Classified Advantage!

Questions to ask during an Interview:

You have two advantages going into an interview. One, you get to sell yourself, the other is you get to direct the interview by asking intelligent questions.

As mentioned in this column many times before, bring a pad and pen, and write down your questions in advance.  This way, if you get nervous, you can refer to your notes.

Questions should be based on a well rounded knowledge of the company and the industry.  Never ask questions about vacations, sick days or paid holidays, at least not yet.

The questions you ask can set yourself apart from other candidates, so consider them carefully.

Here are some generic questions you can ask, but if possible, tailor them for the company you’re applying to.

What are the most important aspects of this job?

What skills must a person have to be successful in this position?

What were the strengths and weaknesses of other people who have had this job?

Where do you see this company, in comparison to its competitors, in five years?

Do you see a fundamental shift within the industry coming in the next few years?

Do you plan to compete with other companies with new services, products, strategy or all three?

Have other people who have done well at this level been promoted?

How do you rate your company compared to others within the industry?

What are the most immediate challenges for the person hired for this position?

What are the performance expectations for this position after a year?

What are the steps involved in your interviewing process?

This is not a comprehensive list, there are many more questions you could ask but be careful, let the interviewer ask some questions too.

Seeing the “Glass Half Full”

When was the last time you looked at a challenging situation and saw the glass half full? If you can’t remember, or just seeing this expression makes you annoyed or frustrated, then you need to keep reading.  The glass half full is about having a positive attitude. A positive attitude is a feeling you have, a disposition, or a state of mind. It is how you view life and situations as well as the actions you express toward them. Attitude makes or breaks careers.  The newest information available says that employers aren’t just hiring for skills  they expect you to have the required skills for the job  they are hiring based on attitude.  If you are currently in a job  the same holds true- attitude is rising on the list of important attributes for success.

The current thinking is that you will have a better outcome, even when the odds are stacked against you, when you have a positive  glass half full attitude. When your thinking is positive and optimistic, your communication will reflect those thoughts.  Don’t allow negative thinking to adversely impact you or others.

For example, if you’re hunting for a job and feel negative as time passes, you become mired in those thoughts and you begin to drag through your days and see fewer possibilities.  When you get a job interview, your negativity can be perceived by others and your chances for landing the job plummets. Well trained interviewers will observe every part of your demeanor, from the way you speak, to every facet of your body language.  If your attitude is poor, it will be revealed even if you don’t intend for it to show.

When you work on having more positive thoughts your brain becomes more resilient in the face of challenges and you see more opportunities.  Great sales people seem to think this way  they find the silver lining in every situation.

So here are a few tips to help you achieve and maintain a positive attitude:

  • Realize that you are in control of your attitude  and become more aware of it.
  • Reframe failures and setbacks to see the learning experience.
  • Avoid negative people (and negative media) that drag you down.
  • Use a positive vocabulary and stop complaining!

There is nothing in your career, or in your life, that will make a bigger difference than having a positive   attitude.  By maintaining a positive attitude, success will literally fall in your lap… or at least it will help you land that new job or keep the current one you have.

My boss offered me a “better” job title in lieu of more money. How can I swing it back to money, since most job titles are inflated anyway?

It’s important to be open and honest with your boss.  Express appreciation for the recognition of a new title but explain that at this point an increase in wages is more important to you.

Gain an understanding of how the new title recognizes your contributions and be able to identify what additional value you bring that justifies additional money.  

If additional money is simply not an option at this time, I would suggest keeping the title and setting a date for a performance review with a merit increase based on performance.

Experts say that one should always be looking for a better job, even when you are employed. How much effort should I really put into this and what should I do if my boss finds out?

When it comes to your career it is important to have a plan.  Where do you want to go in five years? 10?

How are you going to get there?  The idea of looking for a better job is to be aware of your plan and work your plan.  You should always be developing new skills and knowledge to prepare you for the next position.  A better or different job can be right within the company you currently work for.  

Only you know how much effort to put forth to follow your plan but part of your strategy should be to not jeopardize your current position if you are filling satisfied and fulfilled.

One of the best ways to look for a job while working full time is to do strategic networking.  That should involve finding out about other opportunities, companies, and industries with people you trust.

~ RECAP: THIS WEEK IN EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

David Brewer was promoted to the newly-minted role as VP/Program Strategy and Acquisitions with Bravo Media. David will now head all facets of the Bravo Program Planning department including linear and digital program scheduling, new series campaign planning, movie and series acquisitions as well as programming support for Sales and Marketing efforts. Based in New York, David will continue to report to Jerry Leo who was also promoted last week to EVP/Program Strategy and Production.

As of December 5, Dan Weinberg joined CBS Sports Network as SVP/Programming where he heads the network’s programming department in addition to working closely with CBS Sports, Showtime Sports and CBSSports.com. Dan reports to David Berson, EVP/CBS Sports and President/CBS Sports Network.

Based in Los Angeles, Jonas Larsen was upped to SVP/Talent and Specials at Comedy Central. Jonas is in charge of all talent development/relations in addition to heading original specials productions such as the COMEDY CENTRAL Roast franchise, the Night of Too Many Stars benefit and all comedy stand-up specials. Jonas reports to Kent Alterman, Head/Original Programming and Production.

TV One announced several additions to its senior marketing team headed by Kenetta Bailey as EVP/CMO:

  • Linda Finney was appointed SVP/Marketing to manage all marketing and media plans for the network’s programming.
  • Scott Perkins was boosted to SVP/Creative Services in charge of all on-air promotions as well as his current duties heading graphics and design.
  • Orlena Blanchard will take on the newly-created position as SVP/Digital Marketing to head all marketing efforts pertaining to TV One’s website, the network’s emerging media platforms, digital properties and TV One’s social initiatives and partnerships.

Tony Carbone takes on the new role as VP/Digital with Oxygen Media. Tony will head the strategy, goals and implementation of Oxygen’s digital efforts on multiple current and emerging digital platforms. Based in New York, Tony will report to Jennifer Kavanagh, SVP/Digital.

Beginning in January, Neil Salvage will become Head/Digital Sales at CBS RADIO to lead all sales efforts on a national and local level associated with CBS RADIO’s digital properties. Neil will report to Michael Weiss, President/Sales, CBS RADIO.

Lizard Trading Company behind such series as Whale Wars, Jockeys and others, elevated Matt Cabral to SVP/Production and hired Elyse Seder at VP/Development . Both executives will report to Liz Bronstein, President.

Effective immediately, Jennifer Sobel joins MediaVest as VP/Director, Talent Acquisition. Jennifer will head proactive recruiting and oversee the talent acquisition team. Based in New York, Jennifer reports to Nat Fuchs, SVP/Group Director, Talent and Human Resources at MediaVest.

International sales and distribution company Comarex hired Jesica Stescobich as Sales Executive/Latin America. Jesica will have oversight for the territories of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Bolivia, Peru, US and the Dominican Republic. She will report to Marcel Vinay Jr., CEO.

Andrew Siegal takes on the newly-created role of VP/Production with IFC . Andrew will head the development and execution of production management strategies as well as managing daily production operations for IFC’s original programs. He will be based in New York City reporting to Debbie DeMontreux, SVP/Original Programming.

Television personality Carolyn Conley was named to the new position of Director/Brand Management for HRTV. Carolyn will promote HRTV and its various services to members of the racing and equestrian communities. She will also continue as an on-air host for HRTV.

Former eBay executive Abby Spatz was hired by MEC North America as Managing Partner, effective immediately. Abby will lead the agency’s Chanel account in the US concentrating on integrated media and marketing initiatives. Based in New York, Abby will report to Eamonn Store, President/Global Solutions.

AKQA tapped Jason McCann as Creative Director for its New York office. Jason joins from TAXI Toronto and in his new position will report to Rei Inamoto, CCO.

Image Entertainment, Inc. established a new unit focused on TV Syndication and has engaged Don Golden to lead sales for the new division. In this newly-minted position, Don will report to Steve Saltman, SVP/Worldwide Television.

Former BBC Worldwide executive, Mandy Roger was hired by M-Net as Sales and Business Development Manager. Mandy will have oversight for sales across all platforms in addition to new business development encompassing formats and channel sales.

List brokerage, list management and integrated customer acquisition services company 4Cite Marketing LLC is opening a new office in Peterborough, New Hampshire. Effective immediately, Michele Rabideau and Lisa Williams are joining the company as Account Managers based at the New Hampshire office.

Discovery Communications added Elizabeth Newell as SVP/Global Corporate Legal and Savalle Sims as SVP/Litigation and Intellectual Property. Elizabeth will be based in New York to head the company’s global corporate and mergers and acquisitions legal activities while Savalle, based at Discovery’s Silver Spring headquarters will manage the company’s Litigation and Trademark legal teams. Both will report to Bruce Campbell, Chief Development Officer/General Counsel.

Former History Channel executive, Jamie Cutburth was hired by Bravo Media as VP/Ad Sales Marketing. Jamie will spearhead strategies and multiplatform initiatives to increase ad sales revenues that include product integration, promotions and sponsorships involving linear and digital. Based in New York, Jamie will report to Ellen Stone, SVP/Marketing.

Vincent Ritter joins The Inspiration Networks as Director/Information Technology.

Island Def Jam Music Group tapped Chris Anokute as SVP/A&R where he will report directly to Karen Kwak, EVP/Head of A&R, Island Def Jam Music Group.

WJLA and NewsChannel 8, the ABC affiliate and the 24-hour cable news operation in the Washington, D.C. area elevated Bill Lord to VP/GM to have oversight of the daily operations of both stations. Bill will now manage the editorial, sales, marketing, technical and operations for WJLA-TV and NewsChannel 8 owned by Allbritton Communications Company.

Relocating from Seattle to New York, Keith Mackay will take on the new role as President/Strategy at Optimedia. In this newly-minted position, Keith will oversee Optimedia’s strategy and planning product. He will additionally manage the launch of the company’s products Pathways, Touchpoints and Catalyst. Keith will report to Dave Ehlers, President, Optimedia.

TV personality, humorist, actor and writer Mo Rocca is joining CBS News as a Correspondent for CBS Sunday Morning.  Mo has been a contributor to the Sunday morning program since 2006 and he will continue reporting for Sunday Morning in addition to other CBS News broadcasts.

Susan Shipsky was appointed VP/Production for Turner Broadcasting’s Animation, Young Adults and Kids Media’s (AYAKM) Creative Group.  Susan will head all video, print, special event and digital production as well as post-production for Cartoon Network, Adult Swim and Boomerang sponsorship and collateral material.  She will additionally manage all on-air branding, promotion production and post-production for Cartoon Network and Boomerang among many other duties.  Based in Atlanta, Susan will report to Michael Ouweleen, SVP/Group Creative Director, AYAKM’s Creative Group.  

Cross-cultural advertising, branding, promotions, digital and communications agency, Republica tapped Enrique Dussan for the new upper management position as VP/Media Services.  Enrique joins Republica from Wing/Grey Global where he was VP/Director of Communications Planning. 

Several executives were added to the staff roster at Golf Channel:

  • Andrew Smiley was recently hired as Coordinating Director to head the network’s studio directors and studio productions including Golf Central, The Golf Fix, School of Golf, Morning Drive, Grey Goose 19th Hole and Live From broadcasts based at major championships.  Andrew will also be the lead director on certain studio programs.  Previously, Andrew worked for ESPN where he was Director/Studio Directing. 
  • Jessica Batchelor was employed as an On-Air Planner for the network’s promotions department.  Jessica is in charge of managing the daily scheduling for logs and promotional requests.  She joins from Sun Sports and Fox Sports Florida.
  • Javier Zapata joins as Senior Graphic Designer, coming from Fox television affiliates in Tampa and Orlando.
