~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

CBS’ Sunday political talk show Face the Nation led by anchor Bob Schieffer is expanding to a full hour format, matching the length of its main broadcast competitors including NBC’s Meet the Press with David Gregory and ABC’s This Week with Christiane Amanpour.  CBS has not said this change will be permanent though likely the longer length will carry through the political conventions next summer.

The social reality show, Bud United presents: The Big Time from Budweiser will make its international television premiere in the US on ABC starting January 21 as part of a new deal with ESPN/ABC.  The series features young adults realizing their dreams from racing professional race car drivers to taking on global soccer stars and more.  The seven-episode series will air on Saturdays.  Budweiser teamed with @radical.media to produce the show which is also distributed globally by FremantleMedia Enterprises.

It’s not 2012 yet though the Upfront is in the news.  USA Network said it plans on moving its upfront presentation to the same week in May when the broadcast networks serve up theirs.  USA Network will host its upfront on the evening of May 17 at Alice Tully Hall’s Starr Theater at Lincoln Center.

South Florida is the setting for Animal Planet’s new series Gator Boys debuting January 8 at 9p.  The series follows Paul Bedard and Jimmy Riffle head of the Gator Boys Alligator Rescue team as they capture gators bare-handed and move them to safety before trappers kill them for their meat and skin.  The six-episode one-hour series is from Mike Mathis Productions.

Discovery Channel has set January 9 at 9p as the premiere date for its new docu-series First Week In.  The series focuses on the lives of profiled inmates and the events leading up to their incarceration.  Cameras document the moves of first time offenders and the series also includes commentary from correctional officers involved in the cases.  First Week In is produced for Discovery Channel by 44 Blue Productions.

New supernatural drama series Lost Girl will make its debut on Syfy beginning January 16 at 10p following the sophomore premiere of Being Human at 9p.  Lost Girl is developed and produced by Prodigy Pictures, in association with Shaw Media and Showcase.

Crimes of passion are highlighted in Investigation Discovery’s latest series Scorned: Love Kills opening on January 21 at 10p.  The first season of Scorned: Love Kills is comprised of 20 episodes exploring the dark side of love, lust and obsession that has fueled horrible crimes.  The series is from Optomen Productions for ID.

Wellness and lifestyle network, Veria Living introduces a new programming lineup along with a new on-air look and online, commencing January 1:

  • Labor of Love is a new original series following real-life parents-to-be during their nine-month journey to natural childbirth. The series premieres January 1 with a New Year’s Day marathon at 11a; the series airs on Saturdays at 9p.
  • The List is a half-hour new series hosted by Liza Fromer who is challenged to check off items on a special “life list” and along the way she helps others realize their dreams. The series airs on Sundays at 9p beginning January 8.
  • The network acquired the half-hour series The Last 10 Pound Boot Camp which airs Mondays at 9p beginning January 9.
  • New series Sports Dads with host Deion Sanders attempts to bring balance to families raising superstar athletes.  The series airs on Fridays at 9p starting January 13.
  • The Incurables with host Jewel is back for a third season relating more stories of real patients who refused to give up when faced with a fatal illness.  The series airs Thursdays at 9p beginning January 19.

A new look is in store for the second season of Jersey Couture when it premieres on Oxygen February 7 at 10p with back-to-back half-hour episodes.  The series follows the Scalis family owners of a glamour shop in South New Jersey.  Jersey Couture is produced by Half Yard Productions.

Reality series Campus PD returns for a fourth season in new cities and some familiar locations on G4 starting January 3 at 10p.  The series follows college town police officers who work hard to keep students safe.

The Style Network reality series Ruby will not continue for a fifth season, reports EW.  The network said it has “no plans” to order a fifth season though indicated production on a new season might not be ruled out for the future.

Saturday’s Your Voice, Your Vote – Republican Presidential Debate in Iowa broadcast by ABC News delivered the most-watched debate to date of the 2012 campaign season.  The debate from 9p to 11p attracted 7.58 million total viewers and 2.10 million with A25-54

~ DISTRIBUTION, CARRIAGE, & CLEARANCE ~

Procedural crime drama Cold Case was picked up by ION Television from Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution.  Cold Case will be part of ION Television’s schedule starting first quarter 2012.  ION Television also extended and expanded its rights to the drama Without a Trace.

CBC Television Stations, a unit of CBS Corporation made a deal to purchase the independent television station in New York, WLNY-TV.  The terms of the agreement with the seller, WLNY Holdings, Inc. was not available.  This purchase of WLNY-TV in addition to WCBS-TV will give CBS a duopoly in the nationals #1 media market.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Actress Eva Longoria (ABC’s Desperate Housewives) sold a one-hour legal drama titled Vega v. Vega to The CW.  Produced by Warner Bros. Television, the drama is about a young, brilliant lawyer who is forced to go into practice with her mother, a pioneering female attorney and with whom she has a love/hate relationship.  Yahlin Chang will write and be an executive producer along with Longoria, George W. Perkins and Sunta Izzicupo.  Elizabeth Bradley is also on board as a co-executive producer.

A first-look development agreement was forged between ITV Studios America and M3 Creative, the creative agency from Andy Meyers that is now involved in series production.  The new deal between ITV Studios America and M3 Creative includes rights on original non-scripted projects from M3.

TV personality Lisa Rinna is officially returning to her original role with NBC’s Days of Our Lives.  Rinna will reprise her role as Billie Reed on the soap as a contract player and her first episode appearance is set for March 8.  Rinna last appeared on Days in 2005.

The second reality series set in Alaska being shopped by producer Mark Burnett and former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin has apparently been turned down by both TLC’s owner Discovery Communications and A&E Networks, cites THR.  The proposed new series would focus on Todd Palin and his championship snowmobile racing career.  The reality series Sarah Palin’s Alaska launched on TLC in November 2010 with 5 million viewers.
