Good morning. It’s Tuesday, December 10, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
After seeing NHL rights jump to Rogers Media, Canada’s Bell Media is now tackling the NFL. The company announced a new agreement with the league that extends and deepens its football broadcasts in a multi-year deal. The new agreement will see Sunday afternoon games for the first time on TSN and CTV, with a 1p and 4p doubleheader that will be followed by Football Night in America at 7p and SNF at 8:30p starting in 2014. In addition, Bell Media keeps all playoff games and the Super Bowl as receives digital rights for the first time.
With more Nielsen data in the books, Saturday’s Michigan State victory over Ohio State for 2013 Big Ten Football Championship has set records for FOX Sports. The contest delivered a 7.9/14 national household rating/share with 13.9 million viewers to rank as the highest-rated, most-watched ever for the championship game, according to fast national ratings issued by Nielsen. That also ranks as FOX’s highest-rated college football telecast since the 2010 Fiesta Bowl and is projected to be FOX’s highest-rated, most-watched Saturday night since the NFL playoffs in January 2013.
Sunday’s edition of the NFL on CBS ranked as the network’s highest-rated singleheader of the season, earning a 13.3/25, according to Nielsen. That’s up 18% year-to-year.
The Asian Tour inked a decade-long extension to its broadcast deal with Golf Channel that will run through the end of 2024. The deal will see the network serve as the exclusive TV and digital rights holder of the tour in North America. In addition, Golf Channel and its streaming service Golf Live Extra will also provide coverage of the Asian Tour. The new agreement was brokered by Asian Tour Media, a joint venture between the Asian Tour and IMG.
Univision’s coverage of the World Cup draw on Friday, simulcast on Univision Deportes Network (UDN), delivered an average of 1.1 million total viewers and 562,000 Adults 18-49. That was good enough to top ESPN2’s broadcast of the event, which earned an average of489,000 viewers and 396,000 Adults 18-49, according to Nielsen Fast Nationals.
On the talent front, David Remnick, editor of The New Yorker magazine, will take part in NBCUniversal’s coverage of the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi. Remnick is the former Moscow Bureau Chief for The Washington Post and will contribute to NBC’s coverage of the Opening Ceremony with commentary for NBC News in Sochi.
The Dodgers are adding ESPN’s Orel Hershiser and MLB Network’s Alanna Rizzo to its broadcast team for the debut of the SportsNet LA network, according to the Los Angeles Times. ESPN subsequently announced that three-time World Series Champion Curt Schilling will join Sunday Night Baseball as part of a multi-year extension. Schilling will serve as a Sunday Night Baseball analyst alongside play-by-play commentator Dan Shulman and fellow analyst and former Philadelphia Phillies teammate John Kruk, effectively replacing Hershiser. Schilling will also continue to contribute to Baseball Tonight.
Former U.S. vice presidential candidate and governor Sarah Palin is joining Sportsman Channel as host of Amazing America with Sarah Palin. The weekly series will debut in April 2014 and explore the people, places and pastimes connected to America’s outdoors lifestyle. The show marks the first of three new series produced for Sportsman Channel by Pilgrim Studios.
Westminster Kennel Club and FOX Sports reached a three-year, worldwide multi-platform media rights deal for The Masters Agility Championship at Westminster. The first event of the agreement will see FOX Sports 1 deliver the goods on Saturday, Feb. 8 from 7-9p from Pier 94 in New York City. Subsequent events are scheduled for 2015 and 2016.
NBCSN announced four hours of boxing coverage on Saturday beginning at 8p with Fight Night and followed by the documentary The Good Son: The Ray Mancini Story at 10p. The doc spotlights Ray ‘Boom Boom’ Mancini documenting Mancini’s life in the three decades after his fatal 14-round victory over Korean boxer Duk-Koo Kim.

ESPN is turning to Snoop Dogg for its NBA Christmas Day action. In a 30-second spot for the games, Snoop delivers his take on the classic holiday poem, “‘Twas the night before Christmas,” with the famed prose rewritten to highlight the NBA’s biggest stars and the five Christmas Day matchups. Christmas Day tips off on ESPN with the Bulls/Nets at noon.
The NFL, the National Dairy Council, GENYOUth Foundation, U.S. Department of Agriculture, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the U.S. Department of Education area teaming up for another five years for the Fuel Up to Play 60 initiative, designed to create healthier school environments. The $250 million public/private partnership is complemented by the support of health professional, education, physical activity, nutrition, government and corporate organizations who come together to positively impact school health.
FOX Sports reports a record number of people who visited FOX Sports GO on Saturday. The numbers drove the TV everywhere app to its most viewed day since launching in October with UFC Fight Night, FOX Sports Live, and Big East basketball ranking as the most streamed programs of the day.
On Wednesday, December 4th, NBC Sports Live Extra streamed nine Premier League matches, and scored 4.6 million live minutes watched, including 196,400 live starts, 116,300 visits, and an average of 40 minutes per visit.
After drawing over 20 million monthly unique visitors through sports, LockerDome announced an expansion with a user-focused overhaul of the platform dubbed LockerDome 3.0. The revamp will look to move beyond a sports-focus into broader interests and offer enhanced user capabilities. New features include lockers, unified conversations and embeddable content. In conjunction with the launch of LockerDome 3.0 the Harlem Globetrotters are launching a 30-day “What’s in our Locker?” contest, aimed at highlighting the unique new tools the platform offers and providing an inside look into their property, and offer exclusive content and VIP giveaways.
