Time Warner Cable CEO Glenn Britt offered to end the blackout and go back to the bargaining table with CBS if the net agreed to let TWC offer its stations on an a la carte basis. In a letter to CBS CEO Leslie Moonves, Britt suggested, “Rather than debating the point, we would allow customers to decide for themselves how much value they ascribe to CBS programming.” Britt also asked CBS to stop blocking all its broadband customers from access to CBS content. “Regardless of the issues between us, it is surely beyond the pale for you to subject these Internet customers to blocking of content that is made available for free to all others.” On Friday, Britt had issued a letter to the FCC making the same point. “Such blocking represents the antithesis of acting in the public interest,” Britt wrote, “and flies in the face of Congress’s goals in enacting the retransmission consent regime.” As for CBS, the net “received Mr. Britt’s ‘offer’ simultaneous with its release to the media,” a spokeswoman said. “We are formulating our response.”
Longtime Turner exec David Levy has been promoted to president of Turner Broadcasting, where “his imagination and audacity echo the spirit of Turner’s founder and namesake,” said CEO Phil Kent. “He inspires great teams to do their best work.”
GOP chair Reince Priebus warned NBC and CNN they could be shut out of election debates if they proceed with planned programs about Hillary Clinton. NBC has a mini-series in the works, while CNN has announced plans for a documentary. In letters to CNN Worldwide pres Jeff Zucker and NBC Entertainment chairman Robert Greenblatt Priebus wrote, “If you have not agreed to pull this programming prior to the start of the RNC’s Summer Meeting on August 14, I will seek a binding vote of the RNC stating that the committee will neither partner with you in 2016 primary debates nor sanction primary debates which you sponsor.” In a statement, Priebus said, “It’s appalling to know executives at major networks like NBC and CNN who have donated to Democrats and Hillary Clinton have taken it upon themselves to be Hillary Clinton’s campaign operatives.” Responded CNN, “Instead of making premature decisions about a project that is in the very early stages of development and months from completion, we would encourage the members of the Republican National Committee to reserve judgment until they know more. Should they decide not to participate in debates on CNN, we would find it curious, as limiting their debate participation seems to be the ultimate disservice to voters.”
Why so secretive? ABC is doing everything it can to keep details of new drama Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. under wraps to the point that ABC’s Paul Lee joked at the TCA that a security guard approached him on the set to make sure he wasn’t covertly taping the action. “I’m like, really? I’m going to pirate this?” said Lee. But the need for secrecy is real, insisted exec producer Jeph Loeb. “We live in a 24/7 news cycle,” he said, recalling that a set photo snapped from the freeway went viral. “We’re trying to bring back the urgency of television. While we welcome you downloading, DVRing it, wouldn’t it be great to get together Tuesday nights… and watch it live?” Anyone who wants to can do just that starting Tuesday, September 24 at 8p.
It’s hard to believe he has time on his hands, but Ryan Seacrest has signed on to NBC‘s Million Second Quiz as host and exec producer. Starting September 9th, the show’s action will take place over 12 days and nights and be broadcast live from Manhattan, where contestants will be tasked with playing the quiz show 24/7, or face elimination. Seacrest also hosts a daily radio show, serves as host on Fox’s American Idol and is a producer on E! series including the Kardashian franchise.
So You Think You Can Dance exec producer and judge Nigel Lythgoe takes his tangoing very seriously, but offers a tip of the tap shoe to those Dancing With the Stars amateurs. “DWTS brought dance very firmly into the public arena,” Lythgoe tells Cynopsis. “It took celebrities that people knew and had a feeling for and put them in a fish-out-of-water situation and showed the public how hard and how tough it is to actually do this. It brought an elegance and a reality to it.” SYTYCD airs on FOX, Tuesdays at 8p.
Has troubled star Lindsay Lohan turned a corner? OWN released teasers from Oprah Winfrey‘s interview with the actress for Oprah’s Next Chapter that show Lohan looking anxious, but O assured CBS News that she was “honest, authentic and ready” for the grilling. Interview airs Sunday, August 18 at 9p; an eight-part documentary about the actress’s life after rehab (she checked out at the end of July) debuts on OWN next year.
P&G announced in an earnings call that the company will be spending more on advertising. But it will be “more effective advertising, the right mix of media and importantly reducing non-advertising costs that the consumers never see,” said CFO Jon Moeller. CEO A.G. Lafley said digital now accounts for 35% of the company’s ad spending in the U.S. “We have some businesses and brands where digital is incredibly effective, and we’re doing more,” said Lafley. “Our problem is the mix, our opportunity is the mix and we are going to get the mix better and better and better and there is a lot of opportunity there.”
What is it with sharks lately? On the heels of Syfy TV movie Sharknado selling out at midnight showings in movie theaters last weekend comes Shark Week on Discovery breaking net viewership records (4.8 million total viewers P2+ for Megalodon: The Monster Shark Lives), and a $50 million lawsuit alleging Sony Television pressured Shark Tank stars Daymond John and Robert Herjavec to back out of an agreement to speak at a real-life “Shark Tour” event in Florida in November. But long-time shark advocate January Jones (Mad Men) is sticking with the real thing, taping a third PSA for Oceana saying great whites are in danger of extinction and urging, “please help before it’s too late.”
For the MTV crowd, 2010 is retro. The net is running a marathon of the 2006-2010 reality show The Hills, dubbed RetroMTV Brunch, starting Monday, August 5 at 9a and concluding with an “alternate ending” to the series on Friday, August 9 at 11:30a. Stars from MTV’s Awkward and Girl Code will offer commentary as LC, Audrina and the gang go Hollywood.
As it readies its new 24-hour sports network, FOX Sports 1, FOX has hired Michelle Kwan to cover the Winter Games in Sochi. Former skating champion Kwan told the AP she’ll be doing “inside” stories on other sports as well, including curling and hockey. Channel debuts Saturday, August 17.
Who dominated social chatter last week? According to Nielsen’s SocialGuide, VH1 reality show Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta scored 736,045 tweets, besting MTV‘s airing of Justin Bieber: Never Say Never, with 551,862. Dating voyeurs ate up third-place Catfish on MTV (415,985) and ABC‘s eight-place (poor Des!) Bachelorette (187,180), while Discovery (Megalodon: The Monster Shark Lives, fifth place with 325,408 and Air Jaws, tenth place with 152,796) took a bite out of the Twitterverse with Shark Week. Teens and tweens prove their power with MTV’s Teen Wolf (number four with 344,940) and ABC Family‘s Pretty Little Liars (coming in sixth with 282,283), while BBC America‘s announcement about the new Dr. Who landed in seventh place with 252,623 and VH1 scored 167,105 for Hit the Floor to place ninth.
The British Academy of British Film and Television Arts Los Angeles is honoring director Kathryn Bigelow and actor Ben Kingsley at the 2013 BAFTA Awards. Show will air on BBC America on Sunday, November 10 at 8p.
Having wound up his one-year term as president of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, Hawk Koch is resuming his the post he shared with PGA pres Mark Gordon.
CMT is celebrating country star Luke Bryan‘s upcoming fourth album in a big way. Ahead of Crash My Party‘s Tuesday, August 13 release, the net is launching Luke Bryan CMT Weekend on Saturday, August 10 at 6a. CMT promises a special performance, a chance to win tickets to a concert, and “graphics of Luke signature moves.”

Freedom, from Last Resort creator/exec producer Karl Gajdusek and executive producer Shawn Ryan, is in development at ABC. The drama series is about a group of Ivy Leaguers forming a government resistance movement.
Rights to the edgy Crossfire romance novel series have gone to Lionsgate. More than 12 million copies of the books have been sold since last April’s Bared To You; the studio will adapt the novels for TV.
MTV has picked up four reality shows. Slated for primetime are Untitled Virgins Project, about the relationship pressures of four young adults, and House of Food, a cooking competition. Another cooking comp, Snackdown, is headed for the daytime audience, along with The Ex and the Why, a show that gives former couples the opportunity to make amends. Series will debut in 2014.
Sunday’s reveal on a BBC One special that Scottish actor Peter Capaldi was taking over the lead role in Dr. Who attracted 6.1 million viewers and a 30 share. Capaldi replaces Matt Smith.
“Balus” is a magic word that causes destruction in the Japanese anime classic Castle in the Sky, and it did just that on August 2, when Japanese tweeters used it to decimate the world record tweets per second (TPS) during an August broadcast of the film. The 143,199 tweets easily surpassed the prior 33,388 TPS set in Japan on New Year’s Day, and the 25,300 per minute for the birth of the royal baby in July.
Zodiak Media‘s Russian production facility, Zodiak Vostok, will produce local versions of the U.S.’s Don’t Forget the Lyrics and U.K. hit Shipwrecked for broadcaster NTV.

Friday A18-49 Analysis: ION grabbed the most A18-49 viewers Friday with 1.3/5, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen. At 8p, it was lovers versus fighters as Univision soap Porque el Amor Manda’s 1.3/6 dunked Shark Tank’s 1.2/5 for ABC. Uni’s 9p soap got even steamier, with Tempestad scoring 1.3/5 against the .9/3 ABC averaged for Would You Fall For That. At 10p, love was still in the air, with a 1.3/5 for Telemundo’s Senor de los Cielos topping 1.2/4 for Uni’s Que Bonito Amor.
