Good morning, it’s Tuesday, August 5, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
The Network DVR made a comeback yesterday when a federal appeals court ruled that Cablevision violated no copyright laws when it allowed viewers to access shows from its headend in a time-shifted manner. A number of cable networks and Hollywood studios sued the MSO successfully last year, forcing Cablevision discontinue plans to roll out the technology across its entire footprint. The fight is far from being over, as the whole ad-skipping issue is likely to be revisited. But if the decision holds cable companies may be in the position to offer customers what could prove to be a huge differentiator – the chance to enjoy Tivo functionality without having to pay an extra fee.
NBCU provided some more details about what its “enhanced” Beijing Olympics coverage would look like on most major cable systems, including Comcast, Time Warner Cable, Cox and Charter.
- VOD: Pre-Game clips will be made available in advance to build excitement for the games including Beijing 411, Meet the Athletes and Team USA Preview. In-Games packages will feature access to select events each day, including daily highlights by sport
- Linear HD: more than 800 hours of HD coverage will be broadcast on select NBCU networks. Coverage includes 225 hours on NBC; 379 hours of simulcasts and re-airs of CNBC and MSNBC on Universal HD; 165 hours of simulcast on USA HD; 95.5 hours of coverage on CNBC HD+ as well as 12 hours/day of sport-specific coverage on NBC Olympic Soccer Channel and NBC Olympic Basketball Channel
- Broadband: Pre-Games (identical to VOD offering) and 2,200 hours of In-Games Content, featuring 25 events streamed live, plus full-event video replays, highlights, best-of montages, commentator analysis and athlete-specific clips
Entertainment Tonight struck a deal to become the premiere resource of celebrity and entertainment news and gossip for MSN. ET will maintain a branded presence on the MSN homepage and, beginning in the fall, produce a daily podcast called ET on MSN, anchored by ET’s on air talent.
Golf fans will be able to find plenty of complementary coverage of this weekend’s PGA Championship on PGA.com, produced by Turner Sports. The site will host 4 channels of content presented in a new wide-screen format (some 224% larger than the previous player,) including a simulcast of the TNT production. The Playercam follows two select groups during the first two days then one group during the weekend. Par 3 covers Oakland Hills’ par 3 holes. Inside the Ropes provides player profiles, course flyovers, etc. PGA.com delivered more than 2 million streams of the PGA Championship last year.
Interactive One, the digital arm of African American-targeted Radio One, launched 3 new consumer websites. NewsOne provides breaking news relevant to The African American community. The UrbanDaily features entertainment news and lifestyle content. HelloBeautiful contains a mix of fashion, beauty, entertainment and lifestyle fare. The three sites will join BlackPlanet, the social networking site acquired by Radio One earlier this year, expanding the company’s reach to about 6 million monthly uniques.
Sundance Channel unveiled its latest web series, the 13-part “Eco-Heroes,” hosted and created by environmental activist Majora Carter, host of The Green. In each two-minute webisode Majora interviews one person who has been an inspiration to her and her work. Sundance Channel will also air episodes of the series as an interstitial on Tuesday nights.
The controversy surrounding the gleefully violent Grand Theft Auto continues, this time abroad. Thai government officials banned further sales of the megahit game after a teenager confessed to holding up and murdering a taxi driver while trying to reenact a scene from the game, reports Reuters.
Mobile/Broadband TV service MobiTV announced its subscriber base surpassed 4 million subscribers, up from 3 million less than 10 months. MobiTV provides TV programming for 15+ mobile carriers including Sprint, AT&T Wireless and Alltel.
Google’s video portal should find the International Olympic Committee to be a much more family friendly content provider than Chris Crocker (see WOTD). A new deal struck with the IOC will allow YouTube to offer about 3 hours/day of exclusive Olympics content to multiple territories on a dedicated channel. Clips will include highlight reels and daily wrap-ups but no live coverage.
Figuring it would share some its staggering $4 billion internal evaluation with its employees, Facebook has decided it will begin allowing current employees to cash in 20% of their fully vested stock options beginning this fall, according to Venturebeat.
Men’s lifestyle brand CraveOnline acquired MyAnimeList, an anime and manga-themed social networking site that counts on users to catalog titles. The site’s existing database contains over 4.4 million anime titles and 775,000 manga listings.
Interactive broadcast application provider Jacked completed an integration with Comcast’s Versus to provide complementary programming around the network’s NHL, College Football and NCAA basketball games. The Jacked SportsTop is an online app that synchronizes with live sportscasts allowing users to customize the interface with a variety of widgets including up-to-the-second stats, video highlights, news and interactive features such as live chat and trivia.
With Olympic coverage showing up on all those NBCU outlets, who can keep track? Tribune’s TV-themed news and listings service Zap2it has created a handy Olympics widget sponsored by Comcast you can post on your profile page to help keep track of what events are on what channel.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~
In a first for the U.S. satellite TV industry Dish Network reported a loss of 25,000 basic subscribers during Q2. The announcement highlights tough economic times and tough competition, not only from cable and DirecTV but also from online video distributors, according to Echostar Chairman Charlie Ergen. The company ended the quarter with about 13.79 million subscribers.
The Consumer Electronics Association announced it will form a discussion group to establish technical standards for portable and handheld devices such as MP3 players, GPS devices, video displays and cameras. The Discovery Group will meet at CEA’s Industry Forum on Tuesday, October 21, 2008 at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, NV.
SinglePoint unveiled a SMS mobile ad insertion platform giving national advertisers access to mobile phone campaign inventory created through interactive television campaigns for hit shows. SinglePoint powers a lion’s share of the SMS-based voting campaigns for U.S.-based games shows for NBCU, MTV and other networks. The SingleBrand platform allows ads to be created for shows then dynamically inserted into scheduled iTV campaigns. The idea is to leverage existing consumer relationships for a range of applications including ticketing / coupons, video streaming and content downloads. Mobile customers will have to opt in to each campaign, according to SinglePoint CEO Rich Bergert.
Social media measurement firm Collective Intellect scoured the blogosphere to gage attitudes about some of the Olympics chief digital sponsors, measuring volume, share of voice, and tonal sentiment. Their findings include:
- Visa holds the largest online share of voice among selected Olympic sponsors with 36%, followed by Coca Cola with 18% and then McDonalds with 16%
- Visa also had the dubious honor for having the most negative tonal sentiment among the selected Olympic sponsors with 51%
- Panasonic produced the most positive sentiment with 71%, followed by GE with 54% and McDonalds with 51%
- Even though the sponsor only makes up 2% of the total share-of-voice, Panasonic had no negative conversations
Harry E. Sloan signed on for another 3 years to continue as Chairman and CEO of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios Inc.
Interactive TV pioneer John Callahan joined San Jose-based ActiveVideo Networks as Chief Technology Officer after spending 15 years with Time Warner Cable, most recently as SVP/Software Engineering for the company’s Advanced Technology Group. John received Emmys for his work on Time Warner’s Start Over and VOD services.
Rebecca Keszkowski was upped to VP/Digital Integrated Marketing for MTV Networks’ Entertainment Group, a multi-platform portfolio of brands featuring the Comedy Central, Spike TV and TV Land and their respective Web sites as well as newly rebranded Atom.com and GameTrailers. Rebecca will report to Dario Spina, SVP/Integrated Marketing for the group.
YouTube is not going to have Chris “Leave Brittney Alone” Crocker to kick around anymore. That’s right, Crocker has decided to Leave YouTube Alone and start his own uncensored website (the soon-to-launch MsChrisCrocker.com) where he can be the sole focus. He feels as though YouTube put too many constraints on his creativity. He feels betrayed. He feels left out. He feels his talents are not fully appreciated. (Melodramatic, isn’t he?) Chris doesn’t mention money, but judging from how little returns many indie producers are seeing from YouTube’s Partner Program, we don’t expect this to be the last defection.
