~ MORE STUFF ~

At yesterday’s TCA tour session with FOX, the network addressed several items including deflecting earlier reports that a new judges panel is nearly in place for American Idol. Peter Rice, Chairman/Fox Networks Group said, “The only thing I can tell you with any certainty right now is no one has signed a deal yet to be on American Idol who was not on last year.” Rice further said some of the information circulating about American Idol was correct though some of what has been reported in the last few days has been “wildly inaccurate.” In other news from FOX:

  • The new epic family adventure series Terra Nova will air a preview in May 2011 before it debuts on the network in Fall 2011.
  • FOX introduces its show content for fall via FOX CODES, also referred to as QR codes, or quick response codes using two-dimensional bar codes where consumers can access show promotions through their camera-enabled, internet-ready smartphones.
  • The first American Country Awards will air on FOX live December 6.
  • For the 22nd season of The Simpsons, FOX has lined up a star-studded special guest voice list including Amber Riley, Hugh Laurie, Halle Berry, Ricky Gervais, Martha Stewart, Paul Rudd, Cheech & Chong, Jon Hamm, Daniel Radcliffe, Jemaine Clement among several others.

Clarification:
NBC Universal Television Entertainment Chairman Jeff Gaspin during NBC’s TCA press tour last Friday was asked by a reporter about Piers Morgan. Mr. Gaspin only confirmed NBC is allowing Morgan to talk with CNN or other parties and did not say Morgan is signing with CNN to replace Larry King in the 9p talk show slot.  There has no official word from CNN or NBC about whether or not Morgan will in fact be signed for King’s post.

MTV approved a second season of its original scripted comedy series The Hard Times of RJ Berger. MTV ordered 12 half-hour episodes for the new season centered on late-blooming teen loser, RJ Berger. The season one finale airs August 23.

IFC will debut new series The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret on October 1 at 10p with six total episodes airing on Friday nights. Actors Janeane Garofalo and Russ Tamblyn will guest star in the original comedy series which was created, written by and headlined by David Cross (Arrested Development) about an awkward American office temp, Todd Margaret who also is a liar and bluffs his way into a senior sales position heading the London office of a new energy drink Thunder Muscle. The network also announced Johnny Marr of The Smiths composed and performed original music for the show. The series is a co-production between IFC and RDF Television, part of the RDF Media Group.

E! opens a new season of Keeping Up with the Kardashians on August 22 at 10p. In the new season, other family members Kendall and Kylie join the often-times chaotic family dynamic. Ryan Seacrest Productions and Bunim-Murray Productions produce the series. Also on August 22, E! premieres new series The Spin Crowd at 1030p giving viewers an inside look at a top Hollywood PR firm helmed by Jonathan Cheban and Simon Huck.

AMC’s two-hour series premiere of Rubicon on Sunday at 8p became the network’s highest-rated and most-watched original series debut ever. The opening episode posted a 1.5 HH rating and tallied 2.0 million total viewers. AMC’s Sunday night audience continued to grow as Mad Men’s second episode of the new season posted a 2.0 HH rating and drew in 2.5 million total viewers.

Emmy-winning screenwriter and producer, Bernie West died last Thursday at his Beverly Hills home. He was 92. Mr. West worked on such classic sitcoms as All in the Family, The Jeffersons and Three’s Company. He won his Emmy in 1973 for writing, along with Mickey Ross, for the “Bunkers and the Swingers” episode on All in the Family. Mr. West was also nominated two other times for Emmys for his work on All in the Family and Three’s Company. Mr. West and Mr. Ross worked together on All in the Family from 1971-1974 as writers, script consultants, story editors and later as producers along with Don Nicholl. Mr. West and Mr. Ross are credited for creating the character of Maude, played by Bea Arthur for a 1972 episode of All in the Family that became a successful spinoff series on CBS. Mr. West, Mr. Ross and Mr. Nicholl wrote and produced for The Jeffersons over its 10-year run and then for Three’s Company which spawned two other spinoff series, The Ropers and Three’s a Crowd. Mr. West is survived by two daughters, one son-in-law and two grandsons.

Mitch Miller, the television orchestra leader best known for a series of records, and who had his own NBC show, Sing Along With Mitch from 1961 to 1966, has died at the age of 99. Mr. Miller was a top record executive with Columbia Records who worked with such talent as Rosemary Clooney, Patti Page, Johnny Mathis and Tony Bennett, becoming a major influence in the pop music scene of the 1950s and 1960s. Mr. Miller’s trademarks on his television series were his stiff-armed manner of conducting and his goatee, along with lyrics superimposed on the screen featuring a bouncing ball (you remember his famous line:  “Follow the bouncing ball!”) During the 1961-1962 television season, Mr. Miller’s show ranked in the top 20.

~ DISTRIBUTION, CLEARANCE & CARRIAGE ~

CBS Corporation and Comcast Corporation announced they forged a 10-year content and carriage deal allowing for retransmission consent for CBS TV stations until 2020 among other key points. This new deal comes 18 months before the present deal expires. The carriage agreement also includes CBS Corp’s cable networks including Showtime Networks and Comcast’s agreement to launch the Smithsonian Channel and expanded distribution for CBS College Sports. On the flip side, Comcast gains increased on-demand access to CBS’ programming through their cable and online platforms. This includes on-demand access to CBS’ Late Show with David Letterman and Showtime’s Dexter, Weeds and Californication as well as films such as the Twilight series. This new deal gives Comcast’s subscribers access to Showtime’s content for the first time online. Financial details of the CBS/Comcast deal were not disclosed.

Genesis International Television & Film made a deal with Fireworks International acquiring the US rights to the family drama, Heartland based on a book series set in the US. To date, Heartland, with 22 one-hour episodes, has cleared for national syndication on television stations representing more than 94% of the country for the 2010-2011 season. Station groups picking up the series include CBS, Tribune, Sinclair, Hearst, Lin, Meredith, Nexstar and Belo. Most stations will air the series during weekend primetime beginning this fall. NBC Universal Television Distribution will be involved with national advertising sales for all 22 episodes. The series is currently in production for its fourth season. Heartland is produced by SEVEN24 Films and Dynamo Films for CBC; the series is distributed internationally by Fireworks International, ContentFilm’s international television and digital distribution unit.
