Cynopsis: Classified

Advantage

08.31.10

Good morning – it’s Tuesday, August 31, 2010, and this is your weekly issue of Cyn opsis: Classified Advantage! This edition includes the top job listings in the Television, Media and Ad Agency markets, professional development advice from national experts, your Q & A’s with our experts, and a summary of executive moves among top companies.

Resume: Profile v Objective

Apple offers a wonderful service as a compliment to their iBooks: you can download free samples of any book you are interested in. The hope being, if you like it, you’ll buy it.  But after reading the first chapter of a book, if you don’t like it, what are the chances you’ll continue reading?

Same thing with a resume, only more so.  If you do not hook the reader with the first couple of sentences, your resume is tossed.

The opening “statement” of your resume is crucial, and will usually determine whether or not the complete resume is read.

Objectives on a resume are outdated. The newer preferred method is a profile on top of your resume page.

An objective explains what you want; a profile describes what you have to offer.

A well written profile will address approximately three key attributes that will interest the employer.

A profile serves as a summary of why the employer should hire you.

When writing a profile, make sure you use the same vocabulary that is used in the classified ad for the position.

As with anything written or while preparing for an interview, plan everything from the viewpoint of the employer.  Solve their problems with your answers.

Profiles are job specific. One does not fit all.

Your profile should include any relevant information that sets you apart from other candidates–for example, if you have a graduate or law degree.

Some experts suggest a profile as long as eight sentences, others suggest keeping it to a maximum of four.

Some see the profile as almost a checklist for the employer. Without using dates or specifics, list in sentence form your qualifications fulfilling the needs of the employer.  Determine those needs by carefully reading the classified ad.

After reading about resume profiles, one has to wonder why we all wasted time on writing objectives.  The common theme throughout the entire job seeking process is simple: determine what the employer wants, and give it to them.  Anything else is essentially, immaterial.

~ ACTIONABLE EXPERT ADVICE ~
RESCUE ME – Do You Feel Alone in the Industry?
by Jessica Sitomer

I don’t know about you, but watching Denis Leary in Rescue Me makes me downright uncomfortable! Don’t get me wrong, his performance is outstanding. It’s the loneliness of his character that has me so unsettled. Do you ever feel that your computer is your “Cousin Jimmy” (the ghost of his cousin who he talks to)?

Most people pursuing a career in the entertainment industry think their only option is to do it alone. They sit in front of their computer or their phone, maybe say a good morning to their pet if they have one, and then decide if this is the moment that they are going to write that e-mail, maybe make that call, or go do some laundry maybe watch TV.

In successful companies the CEOs and/or Presidents have plans/projections for the year. They hold quarterly, monthly, or weekly meetings to check in with their staff to see how the actions being taken are affecting their plans/projections.  There is ACCOUNTABILITY.

Guess what? You are the CEO of your company. When you try and build a company on your own there is no accountability, unless like Tommy Gavin your dead cousin comes back to haunt you when you’re not focused. And are you really going to listen to your “ghosts” when you decide to watch TV instead of making that important business call? Really. Who’s going to know?

The better questions is: who’s going to get the job that you missed out on because you were watching TV while someone else was making the important business call?   Are you tired of waiting to be rescued? Are you ready to find a community who will become the “staff of your company?” The answers are YES and YES, and it’s time to take action!

Are you more uncomfortable than comfortable with taking action for your business? If so, like Tommy, you can be RESCUED! You don’t have to do it alone, but you must be willing to reach out. Remember Mister or Ms CEO, how you treat your business will determine the speed at which results happen and the quality of your career relationships and jobs.

Questions from our Readers
Answered by Kristen Moeller, MS

During tough times like these, when a company is cutting back, is it better to try and stay anonymous or should I strive to be noticed?

What is needed these days is a shift in context.  Staying anonymous or striving to be noticed are notions from the past and focused on the attitude of “what’s in it for me.”  Not that “we” don’t matter anymore but times and attitudes are changing.  Many organizations are re-evaluating what is working and what isn’t. They are looking toward sustainability. Words like authenticity, integrity and possibility are becoming the status quo.  What is needed now are people who are willing to be a contribution and consider how they can make a difference that will carry into the future.  If we think from this context, ultimately our careers will be incredibly more successful as well as satisfying.

I just got hired and my new boss asks me to call him by his first name, but I have noticed that others do not.  Should I do what he says or should I follow what other employees do?
Yes, no, maybe? This is a tough one.  I don’t think there is a “right” answer.  First, thank him for his generosity.  Then, if you could come from a place of true curiosity versus worry or concern, you could ask him directly if he has asked that of others.  Maybe he has and they don’t listen.  Maybe he hasn’t – then from the same place of curiosity, you could ask why not?
