CYNTHIA TURNER’S
CYNOPSIS

08/31/04

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, August 31, 2004, and this is your first early morning briefing.

NBC‘s coverage of the 2004 Athens Olympics ended on Sunday night with the closing ceremonies averaging a 5.3/15 A18-49 rating according to Nielsen Media Research, with an average of 19.6 million viewers. For the entire 17 nights of Olympic coverage, NBC won all 101 half hours of primetime, averaging 24.6 million viewers.  On average, that’s up from Sydney’s games which averaged 21.5 million viewers. It was also the most viewed non-US Summer Games in Olympic television history, and across all of its coverage platforms, the Olympics reached 86% of the US TV Households. For its total primetime coverage on NBC, the network averaged a 15.0/26 (up vs. Sydney’s total average of 13.8/24). And in primetime, NBC outperformed the combined average of CBS, Fox and ABC among A18-49 by 44% (8.5 vs. 59).  The next round of Olympic Games – Winter Games – will be from Torino, Italy, on February 10-26, 2006, so stock up on popcorn early.

WB‘s new series Commando Nanny, which had to switch out actors for the Nanny role when Philip Winchester broke his foot, and Owain Yeoman stepped in (you’ll excuse the pun), has been put on hold a second time.  Gerald McRaney who plays the father, underwent lung surgery on Monday to remove a small cancerous growth. He is expected to make a full recovery.  With that tho comes the delay in the show’s premiere, originally scheduled for September 17.  The plan therefore on Friday nights is to stay with the current line up: What I Like about You, Grounded for Life, Reba and Blue Collar TV until Nanny is ready, at which time it goes into the 830p time period and Grounded goes to 930p (Blue Collar has its primary run on Thursday nights at 8pm).

Tonight’s Premieres:
NBC:  Father of the Pride at 9pm
National Geographic Channel:  Seconds from Disaster at 8pm
Cable nets – email your series premiere dates/time for inclusion here

In an across the ocean TV flip flop, 4 eps of LivingTV’s version of Queer Eye for the Straight Guy will come to the States on Bravo from the UK.  So as not to confuse us, the Bravo episodes will include pop-ups (remember VH1 pop-ups) to ?translate? the British verbiage into American English.  The four Queer Eye episodes will begin airing tomorrow night, and future Wednesdays at 10 pm.

Casting / Production / Development News:

  • Bitty Schram who plays the sidekick role on USA Network’s Monk, is leaving the show as the program takes a new direction.  Her exit comes midseason.  The show is now looking for a new female lead, a 30-something widow who works as a bartender.
  • Once Jimmy Smits completes his term as a Senator on NBC’s The West Wing, he’ll make a move back to ABC where he has signed a development deal for a new series of his own, that he will also produce via his El Sendero Prods.
  • Joining the ranks at Paramount‘s new strip syndicated series The Insider (premires 9/13), are Ananda Lewis and Victoria Recano.  Ananda you’ll remember from The Ananda Lewis Show as wella s various MTV and BET programs; Victoria from her days at Inside Edition and before that local station KNTV/San Francisco.
  • Paramount has begun production on the 30m sitcom Related By Family, which is tentative looking at a midseason slot on FOX this January, 2005.  The series is about a group of teens who work at together at a mall and their various weird and unconventional home lives.  The show stars Amy Yasbeck (Wings, Alright Already), and will feature guest appearances, including in an early episode American idol winner Ruben Studdard and finalist, Kimberly Caldwell.
  • WB has given two put pilot commitments to Jerry Bruckheimer/Warner Bros. TV — one a drama, the other a sitcom, Bruckheimer’s first.  The drama is about a teenage lawyer and his mentor; no information yet on the comedy.
  • Paramount Television is in the process of developing a new comedy series based on the life and times of infamous college basketball coach Bobby Knight for CBS. Seems a stretch to do a comedy about this particular man, but we’ll have to wait and see.

Here is the programming for here! TV?s September lineup available via DirecTV, DISH Network, iNDEMAND and TVN:

  • The Event – A mystery drama looking into New York Chelsea deaths in the gay community.
  • Sugar Sweet – Two characters involved in lesbian matchmaking television and their stories.
  • Speed Demon – A semi-gang mystery movie in which an unknown driver with a demonic hood ornament chases a gang in a small town.
  • Nine Dead Gay Guys ? London-based movie in which two Irish lads needing money take on gay ?gigolo? endeavors.

In addition to the above films, iNDEMAND will offer the following films: It’s In the Water, The Brotherhood, Sixth Happiness, Kiss of a Stranger, Metrosexuality (Episode 2), The Girl, For a Lost Soldier, Green Plaid Shirt, Late Bloomers, Boys Life 3, Johnny Grey Eyes and Laughing Matters.

Jason Applegate has been named National Sales Manager of duopoly KTTV and KCOP, reporting to Tom Sheehy, VP/GM of the stations. Jason will oversee the national sales efforts of both stations.
