Despite Hurricane Irene knocking out power to much of the East Coast, MTV tallied the largest audience in its history for Sunday’s 2011 Video Music Awards. The event clocked in with a record 12.4 million total viewers and a 10.8 rating and 8.5 million viewers among P12-34. The VMA Pre-Show additionally scored the highest viewer results on record with 7.3 million total viewers as well as 5.2 million with P12-34 and a 6.6 P12-34 rating.
And the newest cast of celebrities for Dancing with the Stars are …. David Arquette, Ron Artest, Chaz Bono, Elisabetta Canalis, Kristin Cavallari, Nancy Grace, Rob Kardashian, Carson Kressley, Ricki Lake, J.R. Martinez, Chynna Phillips, Hope Solo. DWTS debuts this fall on ABC on Monday, September 19, with a two hour premiere episode. The season finale will air during the November 2011 sweep period.
Later next month, TLC introduces viewers to Theresa Caputo, a real-life psychic medium in Long Island Medium, debuting September 25 at 10p. Each episode follows Theresa as she balances her family life along with her full-time job of delving into the past lives of clients. Magilla Entertainment produces the series for TLC.
Animal Planet travels back to Houston as 18 new episodes of Animal Cops: Houston return to the network’s schedule opening with a special primetime premiere on September 7 at 8p. A daytime stunt will air on the network over the course of a week beginning September 12 through September 15 at 12p. The series will then air weekly premieres each Monday at 12p starting September 19. Animal Cops: Houston follows one of Texas’ SPCA’s Humane Law Enforcement teams as they investigate cases of animal cruelty, rescue animals and more. The series is from ITV Studios for Animal Planet.
A run of all-new Mythbusters episodes are back this fall on Discovery Channel as of September 28 at 9p. Hosts Jamie Hyneman and Adam Savage along with Tory Belleci, Kari Byron and Grant Imahara explore a myriad of explosive science topics and questions such as “can you use duct tape to fix a plane that has been mauled by a bear?” to “is it impossible for humans (without a point of reference) to walk in a straight line?”
BBC America’s Ministry of Laughs Saturday night comedy programming block premieres the romantic comedy Free Agents beginning October 8 with back-to-back episodes at 11p and 1130p. Free Agents, starring Anthony Head, Stephen Mangan and Sharon Horgan is set in the office of a London talent agency. A US version of Free Agents which also stars Anthony Head will debut in September on NBC. The UK edition of Free Agents is produced by Big Talk and Bwark for Channel 4 and is distributed by BBC Worldwide.
British cult comedy favorite, Absolutely Fabulous makes a comeback after 20 years to television with three all-new specials from BBC Worldwide Sales and Distribution. BBC America and Logo serve as joint American co-producers for the series and both networks will air the series in early 2012. Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley are reprising their roles as Edina Monsoon and Patsy Stone respectively. Over the years, BBC America has aired Absolutely Fabulous and Logo began airing the first five seasons in April 2011. Absolutely Fabulous is a BBC Comedy production and BBC Worldwide owns global distribution rights to the new specials.
CLOO, the new TV destination for crime and mystery programming and also a program service of NBCUniversal Cable, a division of NBC Universal, premieres its first original true-crime series, Killer Instinct on September 17 at 9p followed by Dateline on CLOO at 10p. Killer Instinct, produced by Peacock Productions delves into some of America’s most famous crimes with FBI criminal profiler Mark Safarik. Dateline on CLOO, also hosted by Safarik and produced by Peacock Productions, revisits the newsmagazine’s most interesting stories involving true crimes, mysteries, investigative reports and social injustice cases. Both one-hour series contain 13 episodes each and will air back-to-back on Saturday nights.

CCI Entertainment has sold two new seasons of Candice Tells All and seasons 7 and 8 of Divine Design to Canada’s Discovery Home & Health network. Both series are hosted by designer Candice Olson and produced by Fusion Television. This new deal gives an additional 104 half-hour episodes to Discovery Home & Health.
ZEE TV, the US entertainment provider for South Asian audiences, has launched five new channels exclusively on DISH Network. The DISH Network now houses Zing, ZEE Business, ZEE Smile, ZEE Kannada and ZEE Marathi as well as the previously launched channels ZEE TV, ZEE Cinema, Alpha ETC Punjabi and TEN Cricket.
Starting October 1, WADL/Detroit is rolling out Antenna TV on its dot .2. Antenna TV offers classic TV shows such as The Flying Nun, The Monkees, The Partridge Family, All in the Family and more plus movies.
Israeli drama Pillars of Smoke was picked up and will be adapted by NBC. NBC and Universal Media Studios are searching for a writer to adapt the mystery series. Peter Traugott will serve as executive producer on the project in addition to Rachel Kaplan and Alon Aranya who owns the rights to the series and brought it to the US. Pillar of Smoke, going into its second season in Israel, is set in the rural Golan Heights area of Israel about a police investigation into the disappearance of a cult. Noah Stollman and Oded Davidoff are creators on the Israeli series.
Jason Dohring (Veronica Mars) landed a recurring role on The CW’s upcoming new drama Ringer starring Sarah Michelle Gellar. Dohring will play Mr. Carpenter, a high school teacher at the new school attended by Juliet (Zoey Deutch), the stepdaughter of Manhattan socialite Siobhan Martin (Gellar). Gellar plays twins in Ringer debuting September 13.
CBS’ Two and a Half Men tagged Judy Greer in a recurring role as Bridget, Walden Schmidt’s (Ashton Kutcher) soon-to-be ex-wife.
Brickhouse is a detective drama in the works for CBS and CBS TV Studios from writer/director Jeff Wadlow and Chris Columbus, reports Variety. The plot is about a detective named Frank Brickhouse who works on homicide cases in contemporary San Francisco though thinks he is a 1940s era detective like Sam Spade or Philip Marlowe. Wadlow is writing the pilot script and will be executive producer along with Columbus who will direct if Brickhouse goes to pilot.
Showtime is adding Jordana Spiro to its drama Dexter for a multi-episode run during season six where she will play a devoted follower of Professor Gellar (Edward James Olmos) and Travis (Colin Hanks), cites TVLine.
Casting Call: FOX’s American Idol is holding an audition for season 11 in East Rutherford, NJ on September 22. The New Jersey audition is the last stop on the show’s nationwide audition tour. Men and women age 15-28 years old as of June 26, 2011, who are eligible to work in the US can apply. Rules, restrictions and specific audition information can be found at americanidol.com . American Idol premieres January 22 at 10p on FOX directly after the NFC Championship Game.
Friday A18-49 Analysis: CBS scored the best ratings Friday with a 2.0/7 A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen. CBS’ NFL Pre-Season coverage and Univision’s Teresa tied for #1 at 8p with a 1.7/6 each and ABC’s Shark Tank repeat was #2 at 1.1/4. CBS broke from the pack to win the 9p hour with more NFL Pre-Season action at 2.1/7 and Univision was next with La Fuerza del Destino at 1.9/6. CBS held its top berth position with the final of the NFL Pre-Season Green Bay at Indianapolis game at 2.1/7 followed by NBC’s Dateline at 1.5/5.
