Cynopsis: Classified Advantage

Good morning – it’s Tuesday, August 2, 2011, and this is your weekly issue of Cyn opsis: Classified Advantage! 

I was talking to a CEO of a prominent boutique company the other day, and she told me of a situation that I found hard to believe. The company is looking for sales people and she read through the resumes, one was very impressive. And yet when she got to the cover letter, the same applicant with the professional resume, has a cover letter written like a text message.

I didn’t believe it so she sent the proof. A beautiful resume followed by a cover letter that spelled you, “u”, more than once.

It became instantly clear that the candidate had paid to have his resume professionally written and formatted, but left the cover letter to his own, over-rated skills.

Needless to say, this particular candidate did not get an interview, mostly because the cover letter demonstrated his lack of professionalism and there was no consistency between the two documents.

Michael Pollock, in a past Cynopsis Classified Advantage edition, has specifically and wonderfully described exactly what a cover letter should contain. But many HR people simply look at the cover letter to see if the candidate can coherently communicate the English language through the written word.

Huge inconsistencies between the resume and cover letter serve only to eliminate you as a candidate.

Myself, I am a realist. I am not a great writer but I feel I can communicate my thoughts clearly, though absent grace and majesty. Luckily, this publication was looking for a man on the street perspective for this column, leaving the more professional writing to our guest columnists.  My boss felt the different styles would benefit our readers, and hopefully, she is right.

However, to be inconsistent between documents sends up a red flag that no one can ignore. So be very cautious about paying for a professional resume but not a cover letter. Either both or neither might be better. If you can only afford the resume, find a friend who is a good editor to edit your letter, and not just someone who is “real good at Tuesday night Quizzo.”

Because, quite frankly, inconsistencies in any form, are killers.

Surviving Career Politics

You may be a high-ranking executive, or someone who is still working his or her way up the corporate ladder, or perhaps you are just trying to break into the business.  Wherever your position on the career chain, you may now or in the future be in a position where you have to navigate the politics of your work environment.

Knowing how to maneuver in a complicated system holds the same challenges whether you are a veteran or a newbie in the business.  If you are figuring out your next career move within your own company, or exploring what opportunities might lie elsewhere, remember that wherever you may roam the politically savvy attributes you hone will come in handy along the way.

By being politically savvy I am not meaning to imply that you need to suck-up or kick butt in order to get ahead in your career.  Politically savvy people are opportunists.  They find a way to make a situation work regardless of the challenges. 

People who possess strong communication, listening and negotiation skills often find themselves in a good place when it comes to finding, exploring and creating opportunities for themselves-even if it’s outside of their own company. 

Learning to notice the signs allows you to be open to change and politically savvy people know the difference.  Having a strong sense of self and knowing when to lay down your pride is essential in winning or losing the battle.  It’s not just about having intellectual smarts that helps you get ahead in business, it’s knowing when to pivot to the right when the odds are stacking up against you and to not view this as a failure or giving in.

Building your allies both internally and externally helps to establish your power base whether you are in an entry-level job, or in a leadership position.  Building partnerships within the organization means aligning yourself to others who share your vision and your goals and who may have similar experiences than you do. 

Remember to check any behavior that will potentially get in the way of forging those key relationships and knowing when to set appropriate boundaries with your co-workers and peers.  Being open to changes means that you remain accommodating and cooperative even if you potentially disagree with the direction the companies is moving in. 

If you are authentic in your opinions, you will know how to express your differing point of view without alienating the rest of the team-this is crucial if you want to stay in your job or move up in your position.  Of course if you don’t care much what anyone else believes, than by all means, continue to piss off the masses and see how far that will get you in your career!

Another way to survive the maze of office politics is to maintain a high integrity in what you are trying to accomplish.   Know that it’s okay to be selfish over being stubborn.  Selfish people have self-interest and motivation and that does not always need to imply a negative thought.  People with a strong self-interest have a need for a greater good and know that if they achieve their goals, it will benefit others not only themselves. 

Being stubborn in your point of view implies you only have self-interest for YOU and no one else.  There is a subtle but distinct difference when you are planning your next career move and learning the best ways to survive office politics.  

Remember acknowledging your own vulnerability is admirable and breaks down the prideful walls that keep you apart from others as well as your next job. Think of being a guest in someone homes the next time you are in a meeting that gets out of control or you are in a disagreement with someone over a matter, step back and remember your manners and check your ego at the door.

What is the range of costs for having a resume and cover letter professionally written, and how does one determine how good a writer is before seeing the finished product?

When reviewing costs on having a resume/cover letter professionally written it’s always good to do your research first. The range of services and offerings out there given the economy has produced a surge of would be writers and “experts” in the career coaching and resume writing services where they should be posting a huge sign “Buyer Beware.”

Many people profess to be good writers and offer up templates for resumes that really serve only one purpose to fit you in the one-size-fits all category without any thought to customization or highlighting your own unique qualities as a job seeker.

The costs range from $75 to thousands of dollars that is why it’s VERY important to do your homework before buying into one of these services. Requesting references and testimonials from satisfied job seekers whose resume landed them a great job or really represented their skills in a unique way is a good first stop in finding out how good the person is you are considering in helping you write your resume.

The services you purchase should include the following in order for it to be worth your while: 1) up to three (3) resume review sessions capturing your contributions and highlights of your background; 2) two (2) draft versions for you to review and 3) one (1) final draft in both word and PDF where you can make modifications later on.

The process should not feel rushed and the career/resume expert should be asking you valid questions not just verifying dates, locations and titles from your employment history. If you get any push back as you consider hiring someone remember, follow your instincts and find someone who understands not only you but the industry you are looking to find work in as well.

What is the most important skill to have to get a job, or promoted?

The most important skill to get noticed whether you are looking for a job or are under consideration for a promotion would be your ability to take initiative. There are a ton of people out there who have marketable skills and qualifications but if you don’t know what to do with it or how to best apply those skills, you really are not a value to yourself or to anyone else.

Employers look for skills which are adaptable because let’s face it, companies are changing faster than an employer can update the job description. If you are adept at remaining flexible and finding resourceful ways to apply your skills and take the initiative to apply them towards the goals and objectives of the company, then you prove yourself to be a value to your employer whether you are just starting out or, are on your way towards a promotion.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Paraview TV, a new FiOS Channel hired Diane Ferenczi as SVP/Production and Programming and Rex W. Recka as SVP/Business Operations.  Diane joined from A&E Network and Rex previously worked for Discovery Communications.

Richard Stainer named Managing Director of Bartle Bogle Hegarty (BBH) New York.  Richard begins his position September 1 and he will manage the Google/BBH relationship both worldwide in addition to supervising daily agency operations.  Richard will report to Greg Andersen, CEO BBH NY.  Previously, Richard was with BBH London where he served as Managing Partner.

Guhan Selvaretnam appointed as SVP/Product, Content and Operations, Discovery Digital Media by Discovery Communications.  Guhan is charged with developing and implementing programming and product strategies for Discovery’s Digital Media unit.  Guhan will head the digital content and product teams across Discovery’s US digital business in addition to working closely with the company’s advertising sales group.  Most recently, Guhan worked for Turner Broadcasting, Inc. in the capacity as VP/New Products Group Lead. 

Effective immediately, TidalTV added three new sales roles to its Midwest and West Coast offices with all reporting to Brian Danzis, VP/Advertising Sales:

Crossborders tagged Adam Kahn as Creative Director to spearhead its CB Labs unit, starting right away.  CB Labs is the agency’s incubator for developing new mobile games and apps and other new products. 

NBCUniversal named Megan Canavan to the newly minted role as CFO of The Style Network.  Megan’s scope of duties includes oversight for the network’s financial affairs as well as the creation of Style’s strategic and long-range planning.  She will additionally be involved in key growth efforts on target with the network’s business goals.  Megan will jointly report to Salaam Coleman, President, The Style Network and Salil Mehta, COO/CFO, NBCUniversal’s Entertainment and Digital Networks and Integrated Media.

New York-based John Griffin is leaving Spike TV and his role as SVP/Programming.  John has been with Spike TV since 2005, beginning as VP/Programming.  In his present position, he managed all scheduling and media planning for the network in addition to acquisitions.  Keep us posted John!

Andy Cohn upped to President/Group Publisher with The FADER Inc.  Andy has been with The FADER since 2003 beginning as Associate Publisher.

Q. McElroy joins Cox Media Group (CMG) Ohio as Digital Director where she will head the growth and revenue of CMG Ohio’s entire array of digital products.  In the recent past, Q. has held several leadership positions at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Jesus Perezagua elevated to President of Fox International Channels (FIC) Europe and Africa.  In his new role, Jesus will oversee an additional 15 TV channels and online properties in the UK and Africa and he will also be charged with expanding FIC’s businesses in the region.  Based in Amsterdam, Jesus reports to Hernan Lopez, CEO of Fox International Channels and National Geographic Channels International.

Intersport hired executive producer Dan Bowen as VP/Production and Development and Executive Producer, effective immediately.  Dan will manage the development and production of ongoing and original programming projects.

Galen Jones appointed by Oxygen Media to the newly-minted and expanded position as SVP/Oxygen Research.  Galen will work in tandem with Oxygen President Jason Klarman by overseeing all facets of research and strategic insights for the network encompassing programming, scheduling, marketing, digital and new media, business development and sales.  Based in New York, Galen reports to Tony Cardinale, EVP/Brand Planning and Strategic Insights for NBCU Entertainment & Digital Networks and Integrated Media.

Effective immediately, Jeffrey Funk joins Tribune’s WGNO/NOLA 38 in New Orleans as Creative Services Director.

RHI Entertainment’s Chairman of the Board of Directors, Gabriel de Alba revealed immediate appointments for a new interim management team.  The Office of the CEO will be helmed by Mike Corrigan, David Salzman and Stewart Till who all have been former members of the Board of Directors.  The trio of executives will develop a long-range set of business goals and creative strategies involving development and implementation.  Mike is the former CFO of MGM; David is the co-founder of Lorimar Telepictures and past CEO of four other entertainment and media companies; and Stewart is currently the non-executive Chair at Icon UK and Chair of Skillset. 

Relocating to Atlanta from Knoxville, former HGTV executive Michael Dingley becomes SVP/Content and Development with The Weather Channel Companies (TWCC).  In his new role, Michael heads all original content development, production, scheduling and acquisitions.  He reports to Bob Walker, EVP/GM of Networks and Content.

NBCUniversal named Tahira Bhatti-McClure to the role of VP/Diversity and Cable Operations, NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment and Cable Studios.  Tahira will have oversight on developing diversity initiatives related to the unit’s programming and sourcing as well as working with Human Resources on workplace diversity issues.  Tahira will also retain her previous operational responsibilities involving USA Network and Syfy including but not limited to matters related to real estate and facilities.  In her new role, she reports to Bonnie Hammer, Chairman. 

Paul Buccieri takes on the newly created position as Managing Director ITV Studios International.  Paul will manage all international production companies as well as ITV Studios Global Entertainment, ITV’s distribution and consumer products business.  Paul will further continue to head ITV Studios America where he serves as President/CEO.  Paul reports to Kevin Lygo, Managing Director ITV Studios. 

Entertainment One (eOne) hired Tecca Crosby as SVP/Creative Affairs where she will supervise scripted television development goals for eOne in Canada.  Tecca reports to Noreen Halpern, President/Scripted Programming, Entertainment One Television.

Independent media services firm, KSL Media added Adam Block as VP/Account Director.  Based in Los Angeles, Adam reports to Anita Sites, SVP/Managing Director.

Former Intuitive Entertainment executive Justin Lacob appointed Director/Original Series with Spike TV.  Justin, based at Spike TV’s Los Angeles offices and reporting to Tim Duffy, SVP/Original Series, will have oversight on developing the network’s non-scripted series.  

Asia TV USA Ltd. tapped Tom Marsillo as SVP/Advertising Sales for the mainstream market.  Asia TV USA Ltd. is the exclusive television, entertainment and media distributor of Zee TV in the US. 

Hanna Gryncwajg joins RLTV in their advertising sales department as SVP.  Hanna, who previously was the Chief Revenue Officer at Plum TV, will head all advertising sales, content creation and strategic sales initiatives for RLTV and RL.TV and other related sales operations.

Rick Sackheim elevated to EVP/Promotion with Island Def Jam Music Group where he will manage the complete Mainstream Top 40, Rock, Alternative, Rhythmic/Crossover and Adult formats.  Rick will report to Steve Bartels, President/COO, Island Def Jam Music Group. 

Effective immediately, Bryce Townsend takes on the new role as CEO of GroupM Entertainment & Sports Partnerships (ESP).  Bryce is presently EVP/GM, North America for GroupM ESP and in his new advanced position succeeds Greg Luckman who is departing the company to join CAA Sports, a division of Creative Artists Agency in a senior level position.  Based in New York, Bryce will report to Rob Norman, CEO, GroupM North America.

Millennium Sales & Marketing, a unit of the Katz Television Group upped Ryan Anzalone, Laura Heinrich and Dan Raymond to VPs/Sales Managers all in Chicago. 

AMC announced Glen Mazzara, writer and executive producer on the network’s drama The Walking Dead will now become showrunner.  The network further said discussions with executive producer, writer and pilot director Frank Darabont are ongoing about his future role with the series.  Robert Kirkman, creator of The Walking Dead novels and also executive producer and writer on the TV series will continue in his role.  Gale Anne Hurd will also remain on board as executive producer.  The series further continues on schedule in time for its October 16 premiere date.

Esteban Creste tapped by FOX Deportes as Executive News Producer to oversee the Mexico bureau.  Esteban will lead editorial content and production of the network’s two daily programs, Cronica and Sin Codigos.  He will further be involved with original news content and the expansion of the network’s news coverage on FOXDeportes.com. 

Former Lifetime Television Networks executive Jeffrey Schneider joins NBCUniversal in the newly-minted role as EVP/Business Affairs, Entertainment and Digital Networks and Integrated Media (E&DN/IM).  Jeffrey will manage all business affairs encompassing talent and production negotiations, program acquisitions and new business agreements for the E&DN/IM division which includes Telemundo, Bravo Media, mun2, Oxygen Media and Style as well as iVillage, DailyCandy, Swirl and Fandango.  Jeffrey is based in Los Angeles and reports to Salil Mehta, NBCUniversal COO/CFO, E&DN/IM. 

Dave Ehlers advances to President of Optimedia US, a division of ZenithOptimedia Worldwide and part of Publicis Groupe SA.  In his new role, Dave follows Antony Young who is exiting the firm to take on a new executive position at GroupM.  Dave continues to report to Tim Jones, CEO, ZenithOptimedia North America. 

Phil Cowdell appointed Chairman of Mindshare North America, a new position within the GroupM media services agency. Previously, Phil was CEO of Mindshare North America since 2009.  Antony Young will join the agency this fall to become CEO of Mindshare.  Phil and Antony’s positions become effective in October and both will report to Dominic Proctor, CEO Mindshare Worldwide. 

McCann Worldgroup announced organizational changes at MRM:  Bill Kolb will become CEO of MRM while Marc Landsberg, who joined the firm last year in the dual position of CEO of MRM and President/Corporate Business Development for McCann Worldgroup, will now concentrate solely on oversight of McCann Worldgroup’s corporate strategic development and acquisition efforts.  After the executive transition to Bill Kolb takes place, Marc will serve as Non-Executive Chairman of MRM.

Effective immediately, New York-based Gotham promoted CMO Nick Johnson and Managing Director Lyle Tick as Co-Presidents.  The company’s CCO Marty Orzio and Director/Strategy Alan Snitow will continue in their roles working in tandem with Nick and Lyle. 

Mark Rosenthal, CEO of Current TV is departing the network and Joel Hyatt, Co-Founder will replace Mark immediately.  A spokesperson for the network said Mark’s exit from Current TV was a mutual agreement between him and the network.  Mark has served as CEO of Current since 2009 joining from MTV Networks where he was President/COO.

Previous FOX executive Noel Siegel becomes SVP/Television Development at Next Entertainment, the Warner Horizon Television-based production company of Mike Fleiss, creator of The Bachelor franchise and other reality TV shows.  Reporting to Mike Fleiss, Noel will manage all facets of television development for Next Entertainment including the creation of new content aimed at broadcast networks and cable.

Entertainment Studios, Inc. tapped executive producer Scott Satin to work on various productions and networks.  Scott will be Executive Producer of Entertainment Studios’ hi-def show Who Wants To Date A Comedian? launching this fall as a daily half-hour strip in syndication and will also air on Entertainment Studios’ 24-hour hi-def network Comedy.TV.

Debora Palmer is the new Sales Manager of The Arkansas CW, the CW affiliate owned by Hearst Television Inc. and sister station to ABC affiliate KHBS-TV/KHOG-TV serving the Fort Smith/Fayetteville market.

Effective immediately, journalist Kevin Frazier, currently co-host of CBS Television Distribution’s The Insider has also joined the syndicated urban radio show, Tom Joyner Morning Show.  Kevin will contribute a weekly report to the Tom Joyner Morning Show each Tuesday at 752a covering celebrity news events and answering entertainment questions. 

Dave Kuba hired by High Noon Entertainment as Director/Development.  Previously, Dave was a freelance producer working with such production companies as 51 Minds, Bunim/Murray, Mark Burnett, Allison Grodner, Next Entertainment and Telepictures.  At High Noon Entertainment, Dave will develop and oversee pilots and series from the earliest phase through completion.  He reports to Pam Healey, EVP.
