Following NBC’s telecast of Super Bowl XLVI on February 5, 2012, the network slated the second season premiere of The Voice to air at 10p (time approximate). NBC will then premiere new musical series Smash on February 6 at 10p. The Voice will move to its regular day and time on February 6 from 8-10p.
Sports network VERSUS will be re-branded as NBC Sports Network effective January 2, 2012. NBC Sports Network will be a 24/7 cable network showcasing NBC Sports’ programming, production and promotions. The NBC Sports Group also announced it will integrate a new NBC Sports logo also taking effect on January 2.
Summer original series Switched at Birth was granted a back-season order of 22 additional one-hour episodes by ABC Family. The drama series launched on ABC Family in June with a 10-episode order and this addition gives the series a full first season run. The summer finale of Switched at Birth is scheduled for August 8 at 9p and new episodes will return in early 2012.
Two drama series made their season debuts on TNT in July: The Closer amassed 9.3 million total viewers for its July 11 season seven premiere while Rizzoli & Isles on the same night delivered 8.6 million total viewers with both based on Live + 7 ratings data. The Closer’s opening episode additionally tallied 2.7 million among A18-49 and 3.5 million with A25-54 and Rizzoli & Isles’ premiere registered more than 2.3 million A18-49 viewers and 3.1 million among A25-54.
International distributor Target Entertainment secured the international sales rights to the Australian miniseries cloudstreet with five one-hour episodes and one 90m episode based on the novel by Australian author Tim Winton. Roadshow Entertainment also acquired the DVD rights to the miniseries for Australia and DVD and television rights in New Zealand. Target Entertainment will launch cloudstreet at MIPCOM 2011. Furthermore, Target Entertainment announced Sky Atlantic HD picked up cloudstreet and will premiere the drama later this year. The miniseries is produced by Screentime for Showtime, Australia’s showcase channel.
TNT tapped Lucy Liu as a regular cast member for police drama Southland’s fourth season. From John Wells, Southland is set to return with season four in January 2012.
At the annual TV critics press tour yesterday, Robert Greenblatt, Chairman of NBC Entertainment said the network may develop a new comedy starring Will & Grace alum Sean Hayes. Greenblatt further said the network offered an overall production deal to Greg Daniels (The Office, King of the Hill) to possibly develop a primetime animation project.
Syfy said Jason Priestley will star in the network’s original series Haven appearing in four episodes airing this Friday, August 12, August 19 and September 9 at 10p. Priestley will further direct the September 9 episode. Priestley will play Chris Weekly, a handsome though anti-social marine biologist who has to deal with a specific affliction that has everyone loving him and doing anything he wants. Only Audrey Parker (Emily Rose) is unaffected by Weekly’s so-called charms. Haven, currently in production in Nova Scotia, is from Entertainment One and is co-commissioned by Shaw Media in Canada and worldwide by Universal Networks International (UNI).
ABC’s upcoming new comedy Suburgatory added Ana Gasteyer to its cast roster starting with the pilot episode, per EW. Gasteyer will play nosy neighbor Sheila Shay who lives by George (Jeremy Sisto) and Tessa (Jane Levy) and is also the perfect Alpha mom. The sitcom also stars Cheryl Hines and premieres September 28.
Casting Call: VPE: Vinnie Potestivo Entertainment is casting for women and men who have hidden designer treasures in their closets and stories to tell about these items. The television series project features high-end consignment experts who resell expensive items discovered in people’s closets. Interested participants should live in the greater Chicago, New York or Los Angeles areas and have luxury or one-of-a-kind designer clothes, shoes or accessories in their wardrobe that they would like to sell. Friday A18-49 Analysis: Univision held the top spot Friday night with a 1.3/5 among A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen. Univision’s Triunfo del Amor posted a narrow win at 8p at 1.3/5 while ABC’s Shark Tank repeat and CBS’ Flashpoint each delivered a 1.2/5 in second place. Univision’s second hour of Triunfo del Amor won at 9p with a 1.6/5 followed by a rebroadcast of NBC’s Dateline at 1.3/5. At 10p, NBC’s Dateline flipped into #1 at 1.6/5 and ABC’s 20/20 and Univision’s La Rosa de Guadalupe tied for #2 at 1.2/4 each.

Former CBS network executive Bela Bajaria becomes EVP of Universal Media Studios. Along with Bela’s new appointment as head of the NBC television production company, the studio will re-establish as a stand-alone entity after it merged into the NBC network three years ago. Bela begins her new position in mid-August and she reports to Robert Greenblatt, Chairman, NBC Entertainment.
Chris Hayes joins MSNBC’s on-air team as the host of a new weekend morning show. Chris’ new political themed program will air live on Saturdays from 7-9a and also on Sundays from 8-10a beginning September 17. Chris has been a contributor at MSNBC and a substitute host for The Rachel Maddow Show and The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell. He will remain as a contributor to the network and also continue in his present position as Editor-at-Large of The Nation. Weekends with Alex Witt anchored by Alex Witt will follow Chris’ show on Saturdays from 9a to noon and on Sundays from 10a to noon. She will continue as anchor of MSNBC Weekends.
A+E Networks added Saugato Banerjee as Director/Strategy and Business Development, Asia. Saugato will manage and implement A+E Networks’ business development initiatives across the Asia Pacific region. He will report to Alan Hodges, Managing Director, Asia Pacific, A+E Networks.
Multichannel healthcare marketing and technology agency, LBi Health, a unit of LBi, hired three executives from Digitas Health, effective immediately. Joining the New York-based healthcare agency are Krista Bowman as Client Services Director; David Lavietes as Group Director/Strategy and Planning; and David Lane Fisher as Group Delivery Director. All three will report to Gregg Fisher, LBi Health Managing Director.
Jason Feneque advances to Senior Director/Affiliate Sales and Marketing at the YES network where he will head daily affiliate sales and marketing activities for the regional sports network. Jason will also manage the network’s relationships with various over-the-air broadcast partners outside the New York DMA. Jason reports to Ray Hopkins, COO.
Starting immediately, Elisa J. Carson joined Crossborders as Interactive Director. Most recently, Elisa served as Executive Producer at WPP Group’s Wunderman. In her new role at Crossborders, Elisa will head the company’s biggest account Walmart and additionally will manage new business and a ten-person team working in the interactive department. Elisa reports to Nick Godfrey, COO.
Sherry Pitkofsky takes on the new role as VP/Partnership Marketing, Promotions and Public Affairs with WE tv. Sherry will oversee WE tv’s brand awareness and viewer affinity efforts. Based in New York City, Sherry reports to Rosie Pisani, SVP/Marketing.
Screenvision appointed Lee Heffernan as SVP/Marketing where she will report to Mark Mitchell, Chief Revenue Officer. Lee joins Screenvision from Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia where she served as SVP/Integrated Marketing.
Elliott Gordon, the former Director/Digital Media and Product Management for the NFL, tagged by Universal Sports Network as VP/GM of Digital Media. In his new role, Elliott will supervise all digital efforts for the network encompassing digital operations, product development, sales production and vendor oversight. He will report to Perkins Miller, COO, Universal Sports.
New York-based independent producer of non-fiction entertainment content, Atlas Media Corp promoted Jeanne McHale Waite to EVP/GM and named Abby Strauss to the role of VP/Production. Both appointments are effective immediately. Jeanne’s scope includes managing production, post production, operations and legal/business affairs departments in addition to overseeing communication between these departments and programming and development. In her new role, Abby will head all physical production for the company consisting of budgets, cost reporting and growth as well as hiring and supervising all EICs and Line Producers. Abby reports to Jeanne McHale Waite.
