Good morning. It’s Tuesday, August 28, 2012, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing. 

FOX Deportes is adding college football to its telecast schedule, with 17 games on deck to mark the “most-ever carried in one season in the history of U.S. Latino media.” The move comes just a week after the channel announced plans to carry NASCAR races next season. Overall, the network will carry 14 regular-season college football games live in Spanish, mainly from the Pac-12 or Big 12 conferences, as well as the Pac-12 and Big Ten Football Championship games and the AT&T Cotton Bowl Classic. The season will begin Saturday with the Hawaii/USC game at 7:30p.

On the Air

NBC Sports nabbed a ratings win on Sunday night with the NFL preseason game between the Panthers and Jets, averaging 7.7 million viewers and a 4.9 rating/8 share in households for the telecast. Among adults 18-49, the game drew a 2.5 rating.

NFL Network added on-air talent Chris Rose to its roster, where he will host the channel’s Sunday night shows NFL GameDay Highlights, NFL GameDay Final as well as the postgame edition of NFL Total Access that follows the network’s Thursday Night Football games.

CBS Sports is kicking off the 2012 college football season with a special two-hour pre-game show, Inside College Football: Notre Dame-Navy Kickoff at 7a. Adam Zucker hosts and will be joined by analysts Brian Jones, Houston Nutt, Aaron Taylor and reporter Bruce Feldman from CBS Sports Network’s Chelsea Piers Studio in New York City. The game will then come live from Dublin at 9a featuring CBS Sports’ lead college football team of Verne Lundquist, Gary Danielson and reporter Tracy Wolfson.

Meanwhile, Fox Sports and the Dodgers have been in preliminary discussions on a cable TV deal that could be worth as much as $4 billion, according to various reports yesterday. Although the team and media company cannot formally begin conversations until Oct. 15, the renewal would potentially include joint ownership of English as well as Spanish language channel.

London organizers told reporters that more than 100 countries will broadcast the Paralympics, marking the most comprehensive coverage of the event in the organization’s history, according to the AP. Since the Olympics wrapped up, officials said that ten broadcast deals have been signed, although International Paralympic Committee President Philip Craven noted that he was “very disappointed” that there will only be 5.5 hours of coverage in the US, with none of it live.

Time Warner Cable SportsNet announced that the upcoming channel will carry San Diego State, UNLV and Fresno State football and basketball games starting this season. The network, which launches October 1, will showcase 12 live Mountain West Conference football games as well as more than 24 Mountain West basketball games. The football schedule will begin on Oct. 6 with Fresno St./Colorado St. at 4p.

Comcast SportsNet Mid-Atlantic revealed its 44-game schedule of 2012 NCAA football games, anchored by weekly match-ups from the ACC and CAA conferences. The network’s live coverage kicks off with Towson/Kent State on Thursday, Aug. 30, at 7p on CSN Plus and will continue on Saturday with a Richmond/Virginia game at 3p. The ACC slate will feature 14 games this season, with 14 more from the CAA.

FCS football is mulling a makeover, according to the AP. Schools in the division, which is formerly known as I-AA are considering a new name for that level of competition. The NCAA is funding a rebranding initiative that could lead to a new moniker.

IBM is launching two new TV commercials this week during the U.S. Open tennis tournament that will be part of the company’s “Smarter Planet” campaign and created by Ogilvy & Mather. The ads are designed to target CMOs and the other C-level executives to play up the company’s software solutions for analytics, data management and cloud computing.

Digital Fields

ESPN released its college football app, redesigned from the ground up. The ESPN College Football app, was previously called ESPN Bowl Bound, and offers video-clip highlights of key plays from select games within a minute of the live action on the field; as well as alerts for scoring plays, potential upsets and breaking news; customizable scoreboards; and access to live games on the programmer’s WatchESPN.

CBS will utilize Shazam Entertainment’s apps for its coverage of the US Open, according to reports, to give fans access real-time scores, player photo gallery and profiles, social sharing via Facebook and a live Twitter feed.

Comcast SportsNet Mid-Atlantic named Mike Wargo as Digital Media Managing Editor for the company’s platforms, including CSNwashington.com and CSNbaltimore.com. There, he will oversee the network’s digital media writers and producers as well as lead the continued expansion of the network’s social media and mobile platforms and assist with the department’s overall operations.
