Good morning. It’s Tuesday, August 27, 2013, and this is your first early morning briefing.
Tonight’s Premieres:
A&E: Storage Wars Texas at 9p
ID: Evil, I at 10p
Tonight’s Finales:
ABC Family: Pretty Little Liars at 8p, Twisted at 9p
Going back to Sunday night was a smart move for MTV‘s VMAs the raucous awards show bounced back in a big way from a 16-year low of 6.13 million viewers a year ago (when it hopped to Thursday night) to average an estimated 10.1 million viewers, higher than any year from 2006-2010. In the A12-34 demo, the show hit a 7.8 rating, up 47 percent from last year and the event was an even bigger hit digitally, with more than 15 million streams generated, an MTV record.
It took a while to set a date, but it’s official – MediaBuzz will premiere Sunday, September 8 at 11a. Fox News Channel‘s one-hour, live weekend program will be hosted by Howard Kurtz, who left the post he’d held since 1998 as host of CNN‘s Reliable Sources amid backlash after he claimed (incorrectly) that NBA player Jason Collins hadn’t mentioned his engagement when he came out as gay in a Sports Illustrated story. One of the new show’s direct time slot competitors: Reliable Sources.
Turner Broadcasting System‘s digital brand aimed at the growing tide of health-conscious consumers – and the marketers who want to target them – is headed for television. Now comprised of a web site as well as YouTube and social media channels, and touting itself as “a robust healthy living destination for consumers and advertisers,” Upwave will add a two-hour programming block on Turner’s HLN starting in December, Sundays at 7p.
WealthTV is changing its name. The upscale net is rebranding as AWE (A Wealth of Entertainment) starting October 1, a result of “misperceptions that the old network name was financial related or elitist,” said network Pres Charles Herring. Programming will still feature “fast cars and expensive homes,” promised Herring of the cable net, launched in 2004 (tag line: “It’s your life, spend it well”).
MSNBC will air the American Latino Media Arts Awards live for the first time since they were created in 1995 by civil rights organization National Council of La Raza. A one-hour broadcast of the awards will be followed by a discussion of issues affecting the Latino community, preempting regular documentary content. Awards will air Friday, September 27 at 9p.
In a marketing promotion gone a bit awry, the Hollywood Reporter distributed 15,000 nutrition bars a few weeks ago, which some subscribers nibbled on without reading the label. It turns out the Dogsbar treats were exactly as advertised for dogs. “At least they were gluten-free,” THR publisher Lynne Segall commented to the New York Times.
FX has ordered three eps of talk show Anarchy Afterward, to follow its Sons of Anarchy. The programs will stream live on the net’s web site after the September 10 season six premiere, episode five and the season finale. It’s a strategy that’s gotten buzz for AMC with The Walking Dead follow-up, The Talking Dead, and Talking Bad‘s assist for the fifth and final season of Breaking Bad.
CMT reality series Tori & Dean: Cabin Fever follows Tori Spelling (Beverly Hills, 90210) and her husband, Dean McDermott as they renovate a rustic cottage into their dream home. “This is another example of our cameras capturing the challenges that come with such a project – but this time the family happens to be a famous Hollywood couple who has tremendous appeal to our young, upscale audience,” Kathleen Finch, general manager, HGTV and DIY Network tells Cynopsis. “We expect it to appeal to advertisers in every category, from home improvement to retail to financial services, automotive and packaged goods.” Series debuts in spring, 2014.
CBS is taking a stab at Love, American Style with a twist. In its 1969-1974 incarnation on ABC, the show was an anthology comedy, but in the wake of the failure of shows like NBC’s Love Bites (2011) the net is taking a different tack, following the intersecting lives of four couples. A 1999 reboot of the series didn’t make it past the pilot.
Adam Levine (The Voice) signed a first-look deal with NBC in May, and the net liked what it saw. The Maroon 5 singer has a sitcom in development based on his real-life friendship with Gene Hong (Community), who will write the pilot and exec produce with Levine and Jordan Feldstein.
ABC has picked up a comedy from actor/comedian Jay Baruchel, a semi-autographical account of an actor who exits Hollywood to return to his roots in Burlington, Vermont.
Syfy has ordered a pilot for 12 Monkeys, based on the 1995 Terry Gilliam film that starred Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt. The net is looking for new original projects after its successful launch of science fiction series Defiance this year.
Uncommon Content has struck an international licensing deal with Electus to sell two series it created for its YouTube Reserve channel, Capture and Ex-Pats. “As the media landscape evolves,” said Electus Pres John Pollak, “the demand for non-linear content by traditional linear broadcasters has begun to increase significantly.”
No one appreciates the value of a live event like a sports fan – even if the event doesn’t involve a ball and bat. Digital media company MLB Advanced Media‘s chief executive Bob Bowman told the New York Times that the division, owned by the baseball league’s 30 clubs, wants to distribute a variety of live events, and has acquired the rights to a concert, the Global Citizen Festival because, “We want to gain experience selling worldwide rights.” The September concert, in NYC’s Central Park and featuring Stevie Wonder, John Mayer, Alicia Keys and Kings of Leon, will be live-streamed and likely packaged as a special. “Live events are content that people want,” said Bowman. “I think you’re going to see more and more of these.”
Lionsgate is teaming up with Munich-based production company Tandem Communications to develop and produce one-hour drama series. First up is Sex, Lies and Handwriting, about a handwriting expert drawn into the world of crime, “a series we believe has the potential to attract a broad audience around the world,” said Lionsgate TV Group Pres Kevin Beggs.
With parents and kids in the thick of back-to-school shopping, syndicators are eager for a piece of the pie. The Syndicated Network Television Association released a report hoping to demonstrate the importance of reaching shoppers over the summer, as well as showing that the programming moms and A18-24 are tuning into (such as Family Guy and Law & Order: SVU) makes syndication an effective vehicle. “Syndication continues to be the summer ratings leader,” SNTA Pres Mitch Burg tells Cynopsis. “It serves both for current spenders during the summer, and as an entry point for new spenders.”
There are changes ahead for the tenth season of U.K.’s The X Factor. The singing show has suffered for the past two seasons without acerbic Simon Cowell on the judging panel (its season finale drew 11.1 million viewers, versus 17.2 million for the finale in 2010, Cowell’s last), though the ITV1 show remains one of Britain’s most highly rated. In addition to the return of Sharon Osbourne, an original judge, the audition format will be tweaked. As for the dip in ratings, ITV director of TV Peter Fincham said, “Juggernauts will fluctuate.”

Even against fierce competition from cable content (MTV‘s VMA Awards, AMC‘s Breaking Bad), NBC‘s preseason football led broadcast nets Sunday night with a strong 1.9/6 in A18-49 in preliminary Nielsen numbers. CBS drew the most total viewers, with a 6.7 million average, including 7.1 million for Big Brother, a 10% jump from last week.
Not even an interview with President Obama could turn New Day‘s luck around. A ratings magnet on NBC‘s Tonight Show, Obama’s appearance on CNN‘s new morning show saw an A25-54 demo decline of 11% from a week ago, despite an increase of 9% in total viewers. Some consolation: a 30% ratings drop A25-54 at MSNBC‘s Morning Joe, to 80,000 viewers, bumped up New Day from fourth place to third in the demo.
Friday A18-49 Analysis: CBS scored the most A18-49 viewers Friday with 2.3/9, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen. CBS won every hour with pre-season football, earning 2.1/9 at 8p against a 1.3/5 for Univision’s Porque el Amor Manda, a 2.6/10 at 9p opposite 1.3/5 for Univision’s Tempestad and closing the evening with 2.4/9 over the 1.1/4 Univision drew for Que Bonito Amor.
