Cynopsis: Kids!

08/26/08

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, August 26, 2008, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Marvel Entertainment, Inc. is partnering with the noted Japanese animation studio Madhouse to create new characters based on the Marvel Universe for the Japanese market.  Marvel and Madhouse will work closely to produce new Japanese anime series inspired by Marvel’s library of characters, which will be adapted using anime style and creating unique back stories that will intertwine local culture and Japanese history in an effort to make characters and stories that are relevant to Japanese audiences.  Madhouse is currently in production on the first of four new series (12×30), which are slated to launch in spring 2010, and will do so on Animax, the 24/7 anime network.  The initial series will feature characters including Iron Man and Wolverine, among others.  Ultimately, Madhouse plans to adapt the entire Marvel Universe, thus creating an entire new character base for Marvel.  Additionally, Marvel and Madhouse will support the new series with merchandising efforts.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Kristen Bell will reportedly lend her voice to the lead female character in Warner Bros. upcoming CG animated Astro Boy movie, according to just about every movie website and blog on the face of the planet.  Who that female character actually is remains to be seen.  The Imagi Entertainment movie will star Freddie Highmore as the voice of Astro Boy as well as other voice cast members including Nicolas Cage, Bill Nighy, Donald Sutherland, Eugene Levy and Nathan Lane.

On another rumor mill, Mattel’s Ken and Barbie will reportedly be voiced by Jodi Benson (Ariel in The Little Mermaid) and Michael Keaton, in Pixar’s Toy Story 3, per IESB.net.  Toy Story 3 is currently slated for release June 18, 2010. Benson reprises her role as the voice of Ariel in The Little Mermaid: Ariel’s Beginning, which releases on DVD today.

MORE KIDS STUFF

The animated preschool series, The Wumblers (26×11), makes its Spanish-language debut on Sorpresa this October 2008.  The series currently airs on the Trinity Broadcasting Network (TBN), Saturdays at 8:30a, and during the week on TBN’s Smile of a Child channel.  Additionally, the Giddy gander Company, which produces The Wumblers, plans to release a Spanish-language DVD of the series in time for holiday 2008.  An English-language DVD of The Wumblers released last month.

Belgium-based cabler Telenet and kid/family-targeted production company Studio 100 is set to launch a new channel, Studio 100 TV, from September 1, in conjunction with, according to Variety. The new channel, Studio 100 first, is aimed at Dutch-speaking kids 10-years old and under, and will be available as part of Telenet Digital TV’s basic package and will air daily 6a-10p.  The channel will feature music programming, such as concerts, live events and individual songs/videos.  At least at the start will not include advertising, though Telenet may eventually include ads for Studio 100 programs for download, however there will not be any third party advertising.  Additionally, as of now there are no plans for a version of the channel in the Netherlands.

Nickelodeon is collaborating with CreateSpace, part of the Amazon.com, Inc. group of companies, to make a selection of the network’s series available on DVD, some for the first time ever.  Beginning this week, Nickelodeon series including Drake & Josh, Hey, Arnold! and Danny Phantom, among others, can now be purchased on DVD via CreateSpace DVD on Demand, where discs are manufactured as soon as customers order them on Amazon.com.  The effort gives Amazon.com the largest selection of Nickelodeon DVD titles available on the Web.  (www.amazon.com/nickelodeon)

Universal Studios Home Entertainment releases The Pirates Who Don’t Do Anything: A VeggieTales Movie on DVD this October 14, 2008 (featuring English and Spanish language).  The title includes a new extended ending, family activities, a behind the scenes look at firehouses, police stations etc., a visit to a marina, a treasure hunt game, parents guide, downloadable art projects (coloring pages, wallpaper, pirate finger puppets), games, sing alongs and so on.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Cartoon Network Enterprises (CNE) signs five new soft lines licensing partners for the animated series Bakugan in the US at the Magic Marketplace this week:

  • Hybrid Tees is set to introduce a line of long and short-sleeved t-shirts and sweatshirts this fall 2008;
  • Accessory Innovations debuts a range of backpacks, lunch bags, messenger bags, among others, in time for holiday 2008;
  • Jazwares releases Bakugan-themed novelty stationery for holiday time as well;
  • C-Life introduces swimwear (e.g. board shorts, rash guards) for spring 2009;
  • SGI Apparel debuts kids sleepwear for spring as well.

A full Bakugan line of toys from Spin Master is currently available at retailers nationwide.   Bakugan is a co-production from Sega Toys Ltd., Spin Master Ltd., Nelvana Enterprises Inc., TMS Entertainment, Ltd., Japan Vistec Inc. and Sega Corporation, with animation by Japan Vistec Inc. and TMS Entertainment, Ltd.  Bakugan airs on Cartoon Network on Monday through Friday from 8a.

Nickelodeon expands its deal with Royal Caribbean International, which includes two new cruise trips beginning summer 2009.  The first Nickelodeon Family Cruise with Royal Caribbean under the initial agreement sailed earlier this month.

Wallace, Gromit and Lady Tottington are getting a makeover as Aardman inks a deal with the UK department store Harvey Nichols for its characters Wallace & Gromit to head a print ad campaign for the opening of its new store in Bristol.  Let’s just say no more green tank top for Wallace, instead he’ll be stylin’ in a Dolce & Gabbana fitted shirt and Alexander McQueen cashmere jacket.  The creative agency on the campaign is DDB London.

EXECUTIVE MOVES
