The History Channelpresents This Day in History: 79: In southern Italy, Mount Vesuvius erupts, devastating the prosperous Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum. After the initial explosion, clouds of toxic gas and an avalanche of mud and rock killed the thousands who remained in the two cities. Their bodies lay undiscovered until the eighteenth century. The subsequent excavation of the cities yielded rich detail of everyday life in the Roman world. Today, everyday life goes on for the 700,000 people who live within reach of Vesuvius, which remains an active volcano.
