Cynopsis: Kids!
08/23/11
Good morning. It’s Tuesday, August 23, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.
In the UK, The Random House Group’s Random House Children’s Books (RHCB) inks an exclusive worldwide publishing deal with tween/teen girl-targeted website Stardoll ( www.stardoll.com ). Under the three year partnership RHCB will publish a range of non-fiction books, the first five titles of which are set for release this September 2011 in the UK. The new non-fiction books will feature 2,000 Stardoll member’s meDolls (individual member styled avatars) in the five book series that includes Stardoll Top Trends, Fashion Factor, Super Stylist, My Style Diary, and Stardoll Official Handbook. The books will invite readers to vote online for their favorite rooms, and/or try out style tips and then transfer them to their meDoll on the site. Last week RHCB furthered its online publishing relationship with Stardoll with the release of Fool’s Silver, the second in the Mortal Kiss series.
The new Spy Kids 4 mobile app launches and is available on iTunes. The new app, created in collaboration with Dimension Films and Troublemaker Studios features Switzerland-based security company WISeKey‘s encryption technology to create secret messages. The technology allows users to enter a text message into the app, which can then be encrypted and sent to a friend’s mobile device, and if they have the Spy Kids app the message can then be decoded. The Spy Kids 4 mobile app releases in conjunction with the release of Spy Kids: All the Time in the World in 4D, the fourth movie in the franchise from director/writer/producer Robert Rodriguez.
Disney-Pixar‘s animated feature film Cars 2 will release on Blu-ray Combo Pack, Blu-ray 3D, Movie Download and DVD on November 1, 2011. As part of the 25the anniversary of Pixar Animation Studios, the release will feature the exclusive new animated short Air Mater. The release also features commentary from director and Disney and Pixar Animation Studios chief creative officer John Lasseter, as well as the animated Toy Story short Hawaiian Vacation, which ran in theatres with Cars 2. Other bonus content includes an interactive “World Tour” map of nine locations, including featured in the movie, which also goes behind-the-scenes on the movie. Cars 2 is the first Pixar movie to be released in Blu-ray 3D.
Lionsgate will release Spy Kids Triple Feature 3 Blu-ray Set on November 15, 2011. Slated to coincide with the home entertainment release of Spy Kid 4: All the Time in the World, Spy Kids Triple Feature includes the first three Spy kids movie, Spy Kids, Spy Kids 2: The Island of Lost Dreams and Spy Kids 3: Game Over,
Tor/Forge Books, an imprint of Tom Doherty Associates, and NASA are teaming up to publish a series of science-based, commercial fiction books, NASA inspired Works of Fiction, which aim to encourage students to study science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and attract them to those fields. By pairing NASA Goddard Space Flight Center’s (GSFC) Subject Matter Experts (SME) with Tor/Forge writers, the books will feature scientifically accurate and entertaining fiction stories related to current and future NASA work.
The New York Times, in partnership with WNYC, New York City’s public radio station, will launch SchoolBook ( www.nytimes.com/schoolbook and www.schoolbook.org ), an interactive education website offering news, data and discussions about the city’s public and private schools, on September 7, 2011. SchoolBook will feature coverage by the NYT and WNYC reporters, interactive tools to help analyze schools, as well as conversations, and customized pages for each school and a home page with daily refreshed content. SchoolBook will be free and exempt fro the NYT’s digital subscriptions. In order to participate, users must register via Facebook, which will then also allow them to share documents, photos and video, and ask and respond to questions about specific schools and issues with others including editors and experts. The site expands on the searchable test score database already available via NYTimes.com.
Program Call: Cynopsis Media will be producing our annual MIPCOM Shopping Guide sent to all Cynopsis and Cynopsis Kids subscribers on Thursday, September 29, the week before MIPCOM 2011 in Cannes. If you’re exhibiting programming at MIPCOM or MIP Jr. this year, please send us only the following info for your top 5 shows: title, availability date, number of episodes, length, type (i.e., movie, series, special, etc.), genre and your terms (barter, cash, etc.) as well as your company’s stand/booth location. To be included in this free and highly-read special edition, please send your submission to Lisa Ball at: [email protected] no later than Friday, September 23, 2011. A confirmation email will be sent following each submission from Lisa (if you don’t receive a confirmation email, please resubmit).
Warner Bros. Consumer Products enters into a license deal with Natures Mistake to develop and produce Looney Tunes and Tom and Jerry apparel collections. The products will feature graphics designed in collaboration by Natures Mistake and LA-based designer/artist Leftyjoe (“Lefty” Joe D. Torres), well known in the street and skate worlds. The new lines include t-shirts, sweaters, hoodies and hats featuring a range of edgy, pop culture graphics, which provide a unique and alternative (think indie music, art and skateboarding) take on some of the Looney Tunes characters and Tom and Jerry. The collections will be available on the Natures Mistake website ( www.naturesmistake.net ) and at high-end boutiques nationwide beginning this October 2011.
The Collective and The Joester Loria Group (TJLG) send The Annoying Orange ( www.annoyingorange.com ), the online viral series, peeling into its first licensing program with two deals. Signing on as the first licensees for The Annoying Orange are Hybrid Apparel, which will create a line of t shirts and fleece for young men and juniors that will be available at retailers including Hot Topic and Rue 21 in the fall, and JC Penney fro October, and Accessory Innovations will debut a line of headwear and cold weather accessories for holiday 2011. Bags and accessories will debut in spring 2012. The deals were brokered by TJLG, the licensing agent for the brand, on behalf of The Collective, an entertainment management and production company.
In other Stardoll related happenings… FremantleMedia Enterprises (FME) launches a fashion design contest as part of an online marketing campaign for the Rebecca Bonbon ( www.usarebeccabonbon.com) brand with Stardoll. The effort is the first time a Stardoll member’s virtual design will be produced and sold at retail, as part of an upcoming Rebecca Bonbon apparel line that will be available at Kmart. The design will be selected by the Stardoll community and is open to US residents. Stardoll members are also invited to join the Rebecca Bonbon Club, where they can acquire virtual products and prizes, and have access to the Jennette McCurdy (iCarly) Me Doll section, as well as exclusive video content. FME holds the exclusive master licensing rights to Rebecca Bonbon brand globally (excluding Japan and Korea). McCurdy was recently named the official spokesperson for the Rebecca Bonbon girls’ clothing and accessory brand.
