Good morning. It’s Tuesday, August 23, 2011, and this is your first early morning briefing.  As always, if you prefer to watch this morning’s news instead of reading it, click here .

Showtime approved three new pilots:

  • Gurland on Gurland is a first-person half-hour documentary-style comedy directed by and starring filmmaker Andrew Gurland.  The series takes viewers inside his family life and he shares the challenges he faces with the next phase of his career.  Glenn Gordon Caron is executive producing the project is produced by CBS Television Studios for Showtime.
  • Masters of S*x is a one-hour drama based on the lives and the unusual relationship between the two pioneers into the science of human s*xuality that sparked the s*xual revolution.  Michelle Ashford is writing and will serve as executive producer; Sarah Timberman and Carl Beverly are executive producing for Timberman-Beverly Productions.  Sony Pictures Television is producing for Showtime.
  • Ray Donovan is another one-hour drama described as a dark family drama with comedic touches about a guy who is a fixer for the rich and famous in Los Angeles.  Ray, though, is a fixer who is broken with a troubled Irish family he can’t quite escape.  Ann Biderman is the creator, writer and executive producer along with Mark Gordon who is also on board as executive producer. 

~ MORE STUFF ~

National Geographic Channel introduces viewers to five Southern guys characterized as redneck geniuses, who love to create rockets, shoot them off and drink beer.  The geniuses, led by research scientist Travis Taylor all are from Huntsville, Alabama, home to NASA’s Marshall Flight Center and the birthplace of the US space program.  The 20-episode series launches September 28 at 9p and 930p and is produced for NGC by Flight 33.

Lifestyle series Alive & Well with Michelle Harris debuts on ION Life September 1 at 130p.  The new daily magazine series joins ION Life, a 24/7 digital TV network that is distributed via Comcast, Mediacom, AT&T U-Verse and Verizon FiOS and is owned and operated by ION Media Networks.  The series merges green living with celebrity glam as it focuses on celebrity beauty and fitness tips, eco-friendly style and fashion, deluxe spa destinations, gourmet organic foods and more. 

Docu-reality series the A-List on Logo travels to Dallas for its next edition featuring a cast of socialite men and women who revel in all things fabulous, the dramatic, food and fashion.  The A-List: Dallas premieres October 3 at 10p with eleven one-hour episodes.  True Entertainment, behind Bravo’s The Real Housewives of Atlanta produces the series.

Citing viewer demand, TLC is airing four all-new episodes of Toddlers & Tiaras beginning this Wednesday at 10p.  Additional new episodes will also return on TLC in December.  The four late summer eps are scheduled for August 24 and 31 as well as September 7 and 14.  Authentic Entertainment produces the series for TLC. 

Susan Panisch, former VP/Programming at Outdoor Life Network died yesterday morning after a brief illness.  Prior to her position at Outdoor Life Network, she had been an executive with ABC Sports for several years, and was an attorney having passed the Florida Bar and most recently the Connecticut Bar.  A funeral service to honor the life of Ms. Panisch will be held this Wednesday, 12p at Congregation B’nai Israel, 2710 Park Avenue in Bridgeport, CT.

~ DISTRIBUTION, CLEARANCE & COVERAGE ~

Telemundo Internacional forged an international licensing deal with Netflix allowing for the streaming of content from Telemundo Internacional’s library to Netflix subscribers across Latin America.  The deal encompasses more than 1,200 hours of programming per year including Telemundo’s original productions such as La Reina del Sur (The Queen of the South) which was already scheduled for a Netflix premiere in Latin America via the SVOD platform in all connected devices later this year.  

About a month prior to launch, Bounce TV, the first-ever over-the-air broadcast TV network for African-Americans, continues to grow its roster of markets across the nation by making new affiliation agreements in Philadelphia and Kansas City.  Bounce TV, launching on September 26, will be on WMCN/Philadelphia owned by Lenfest Broadcasting LLC and on Meredith Local Media Group’s KSMO/Kansas City.  Bounce TV has affiliation deals now with Lenfest, Meredith, Weigel, Gannett, Belo Corp., Nexstar Communications, LIN TV Corp. and Raycom Media. 

Effective immediately, Outdoor Channel has launched Outdoor Channel HD on Comcast XFINITY TV systems in Nashville.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

ABC granted a pilot project to Shawn Ryan, creator of The Shield, along with feature writer Karl Gajdusek (Unknown).  The project is titled Last Resort and is set in the near future about a US military submarine that goes against orders and refuses to fire its nuclear missiles.  As a result the crew escapes and takes refuge at a NATO outpost where they set up a society becoming the smallest nuclear state in the world.

In other ABC news, the network okayed a drama project, Hyde based on the 1886 classic horror novel The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson.  The project is from ABC Studios and Sheldon Turner, co-writer of Up in the Air.  Hyde is about Grant Hyde, a doctor with an eye condition who suffers from bizarre side effects after using an experimental antidote to improve his vision.  When Grant goes to sleep, he becomes Hyde, a fearless individual who is the opposite of his personality.  Turner will write and serve as executive producer along with Jennifer Klein through their newly-formed production company Vendetta. 

NBC’s upcoming drama series The Firm began production last Thursday in Toronto.  Tricia Helfer joined the cast in a recurring role as Alex Clark and Shaun Majumder also was added to the cast playing Andrew Palmer.  The Firm is a one-hour series based on the novel by John Grisham and will be simulcast on Global and NBC in addition to Sony’s AXN networks in 125+ territories globally.  The series is produced by eOne in association with Sony Pictures Television Networks and Paramount Pictures.

Season two of HBO’s Game of Thrones is expanding its filming beyond the home production base of Belfast, Ireland.  Croatia is the location for some of the Southern scenes while Iceland is the location for the Northern scenes. 

Discovery Networks International is moving forward on a pilot titled Swinger Wives for specific markets on TLC International.  The plot, set in Atlanta, GA, follows four average American couples who lead typical married lives with children and careers though behind closed doors these husbands and wives lead double lives as swingers.  Swinger Wives is produced by Peter Franchella, Al Szymanski, Aaron Rothman, Cherie Kloss and Nick Budabin for Red Line Films and by Jon Sechrist for TLC International.

Casting Call:  MTV seeks “bad boys” and the girls and guys who are in relationships with them for a new pilot project.  If you have to defend your boyfriend to your friends, family and even strangers, the network wants to hear your story.  MTV is looking for couples who appear between the ages of 16 and 24 who have been dating for at least three months. ~ RATINGS ~

Friday A18-49 Analysis:  Univision won by a narrow margin Friday at 1.5/5 among A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen.  At 8p, FOX with its NFL Preseason match and Univision with Teresa each delivered a 1.4/5 and ABC’s Shark Tank encore was #2 at 1.1/4.  Univision was the stand-alone winner at 9p with La Fuerza del Destino at 1.9/6 and FOX’s NFL Preseason game followed at 1.4/5.  Then at 10p, FOX had a chance to claim #1 with more NFL Preseason action at 1.6/5 and NBC’s Dateline was a step behind at 1.5/5.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

FremantleMedia Enterprises (FME), the brand unit of worldwide production company FremantleMedia named Kate Schlomann to the newly-minted role as EVP/Brand Management and Marketing.  Kate is based in London and reports to David Ellender, Global CEO.

Effective immediately, Kantar Media promoted George Carens as President/Kantar Media Intelligence North America and Steve Davis as President/Kantar Media SRDS.  Furthermore, the company appointed David Hamric as GM/Marx, a Kantar Media solution where he is based at the company’s Minneapolis office.  George was formerly President/Kantar Media SRDS and Kantar Media Healthcare.  He is based in New York and replaces Mark Nesbitt who departed the company.  Steve most recently was SVP/Sales and Client Service at Kantar Media SRDS and in his new position will additionally manage Kantar Media Healthcare which encompasses Kantar Media Professional Health and Kantar Media’s MARS Consumer Health. 

Entertainment network Logo, part of Viacom’s MTV Networks hired Brent Zacky as SVP/Original Programming and Development and Michelle Auguste as Senior Director/Programming Research.  Brent joins from TLC where he was VP/Development and Programming since 2007.  In his new position, he will be based in Los Angeles, reporting to Lisa Sherman, EVO/GM, Logo and he will head all facets of Logo’s current original programming and development functions for the network.  Brent will also supervise Logo’s bi-coastal development team and celebrity talent development.  Michelle in her new role heads the network’s newly-formed Programming Research Department based in New York.  She will jointly report to Marc Leonard, SVP/Multiplatform Programming, Logo and Colleen Fahey Rush, EVP/Chief Research Officer, MTV Networks. 

Rick Carpenter was added at Los Angeles-based independent advertising agency Quigley-Simpson in the newly-minted position as President, effective as of yesterday.  Rick joins Quigley-Simpson with vast experience and in the last ten years has served as both President and CEO of DDB Los Angles and DDB Chicago. 

Discovery Networks International announced a change in the title of its four regional Managing Directors.  Effective immediately, all four executives will be titled President/Managing Director though their roles and scope remain the same.  The executives who have gained new titles include: Dee Forbes, President/Managing Director, Discovery Networks Western Europe; Tom Keaveny, President/Managing Director, Discovery Networks Asia Pacific; Kasia Kieli, President/Managing Director, Discovery Networks CEEMEA (Central & Eastern Europe Middle East and Africa); and Henry Martinez, President/Managing Director, Discovery Networks Latin America and US Hispanic
