CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis

08/23/05

Good morning.  It’s Tuesday August 23, 2005, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Emmis Communications Corporation has signed agreements to sell nine of its 16 television stations to three different buyers.  LIN TV Corp. will pay $260 million for five stations: WALA and WBPG/Mobile-Pensacola; WTHI/Terre Haute; WLUK/Green Bay; and KRQE/Albuquerque, as well as regional satellite stations.  Journal Communications will pay $235 for three stations: WFTX/Ft. Myers KMTV/Omaha and KGUN/Tucson. Finally, Gray Television will pay $186 million for WSAZ/Huntington, Charleston WV.  Emmis announced back in May its intention to look for alternative options for the group to reduce debt and position itself for future growth. No announcement has been made regarding the group’s remaining seven stations.

* MORE GOOD STUFF *

i, formerly the PAX TV network, will debut a new coming-of-age drama called Palmetto Pointe this Sunday at 8p.  The series focuses on a group of high school graduates as they face what happens next in their lives.  Last month series producers Sky Entertainment Group signed sponsorship deals for the program with Nike, Rawlings and Hummer

Mark your calendars – a quick re-scheduling noteABC has pushed back the premiere of Hope & Faith to Friday, September 30th at 9p.  The series was originally set to launch on September 23 at 9p, a time period now home to a second episode of Super Nanny (which launches at 8p that evening).

Following complications after emergency appendectomy surgery, Steve Ramsey, 52, VP/GM of WSMV/Nashville, died on Monday. Steve had been with the Nashville station since 2002. He is survived by his daughter Sage, 26, and son Cody 24.  He had spent time as a News Director at several stations during his 30 year career, prior to his GM-ship.  He was VP/News Ops for Tribune Broadcasting, as well as News Director in several large markets including WGN/Chicago, KFMB/San Diego, WESH/Orlando, KPRC/Houston among others.

Martha has been cleared in 98% of the country, distributed by NBC Universal Domestic Television Distribution, and scheduled to debut on September 12. As you know, Mark Burnett is the executive producer, Rob Dauber co-exec prod., and Bob McKinnon will direct.  Additionally, Laurie Rich has been named Exec in charge of Production, Lisa Wagner as Editorial Producer and Jeffrey Culbreth as Supervising Producer and lead talent booker.

AmericanLife TV Network‘s Embassy Chefs will kick off its new season on September 6 at 2p with the first of 12 new episodes.  Host by Christopher Ken will lead viewers on tours of Washington DC’s Embassy Row, with a look inside numerous embassies and diplomatic residences, as well as offering a a taste of international cultures and cuisines.  This season, the show goes inside the embassies of Poland, Denmark, Iceland and Peru.

Videogame lifestyle network G4 will launch a new late night programming block called Barbed Wire Biscuit on August 29 as midnight.  Most definitely not targeted at kids, G4 looks to attract M18-34 to the network with four new entries:

  • Brainiac:  Each episode features a daredevil team of Brainiacs who examine various scientific principles and then conduct experiments to test their theories – which typically lead to large explosions. Show airs back-to-back Mondays and Thursdays, 12m-1a.
  • Cinematech: Nocturnal Emissions: A showcase of the most extreme movies and cut-scenes from the most popular videogames. Airs Tuesdays, in two back-to-back eps.
  • Happy Tree Friends & Friends: Along with a variety of animated shorts, the series features Happy Tree Friends who follow the adventures of animated forest creatures facing an onslaught of physical calamities.  Two 30m eps air on Wednesday nights.
  • Anime Unleashed:  A long running series on G4, it airs anime programs uncut from their original scripts.  Airs twice on Fridays nights.

Here’s an interesting one, from BBC America.  The name of its new show is called The F***ing Fulfords, about a British family with all the trappings of true lineage, but with the sensibilities of the Osborne clan. It seems the Fulfords are a little strapped for cash, and patriarch Francis comes up with all sorts of money making schemes to help pay for the 3,000 acre estate.  Mom spends her time cleaning the house and betting on the horses, and the kids spend a good deal of time fighting and destroying stuff.  The F***ing Fulfords debuts on Wednesday, September 14 at 1030p.

* NEW ORDERS / CASTING / DEVELOPMENT / PRODUCTION *

SOAPnet has picked up a third season of I Wanna Be A Soap Star with production set to begin in January.  Casting for the upcoming season will be conducted this fall, with a debut in June 2006.

FX has given a third season order to Rescue Me, starring Denis Leary, with a 13 episode order. FX is looking at a 2nd qtr 2006 premiere.  For fans of the show, the second season finale is scheduled for September 13 at 10p. Thus far this season, Rescue Me has averaged 2.7 million viewers.

Lions Gate Television has signed a two year, first look, deal with Caryn Mandabach Prods.  Mandabach and her prod company will be developing new comedies for the studio.

TBS has ordered a pilot of a project called Broken News from Hazy Mills Prods (Sean Hayes and Todd Milliner). The project is a semi-scripted local news parody.  Other projects currently in development at TBS according to Daily Variety include Todd’s Coma from Happy Madison Prods, The Replacement starring Tom Arnold as he does various odd jobs in places all across the country, and 10 Items or Less which is also a semi-scripted series that takes place in a family owned grocery store being bought out by a large chain.

ABC has added Cynthia Wattros to the cast of Lost in a regular role as another airline passenger/survivor on the island.

* CABLE CARRIAGE DEALS *

Charter Communications, Inc. and ImaginAsian Entertainment, Inc. have signed a carriage deal to provide ImaginAsian TV (iaTV) to Charter subscribers. Targeting the Asian American 18-34 year old population, ImaginAsian TV currently reaches Houston, LA, part of New Jersey and San Francisco through cable systems; and via broadcast its available in Edison, N.J. and Las Vegas.

* EXECUTIVE MOVES *

David Rone has been named EVP/Rights Acquisitions and GM of Fox College Sports, succeeding David Nathanson who moves over to Fox Reality Channel.  Rone will oversee programming, scheduling, sales, finance, marketing, promotion and distribution.  He is also responsible for developing strategies, conducting financial analysis and subsequent acquisitions for the FSN regional sports networks.

Lisa Quan has been upped to Associate Director/Broadcast Research at MAGNA Global Research.  Steve Sternberg, EVP/Director of Audience Analysis made the announcement yesterday.

Lori Young has been upped to VP/Commercial Operations, Discovery Networks, U.S., reporting to Wendy Eagle, SVP/Comm Ops.  Lori will manage the teams responsible for the daily placement of commercials across Discovery’s U.S. networks in accordance with ad sales client agreements.

The Africa Channel has named Bob Reid as EVP/Network GM. The announcement was made by James Makawa, CEO. Mr. Reid will be responsible for daily planning and operations, production, creative decisions and program scheduling for the channel. He will also be responsible for managing the network’s staff and its web activities

A CYNOPSIS MESSAGE FROM COURT TV

TRUTH.
It’s not only stranger than fiction…

The History Channel presents This Day in History:
1927-Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti, two Italian workmen with radical political views, are executed for the murder of two payroll guards in Massachusetts.  The two were convicted, sentenced, and executed despite the fact that both men had alibis.  Between their 1921 arrests and executions, their case grew into a national controversy

Answer to Yesterday’s Trivia Question:  On Friends, Joey had a pet chicken named after someone.
